Wildlife Parks Struggle with Lost Tourism Income Wildlife parks across the country are under great pressure with officials and experts expressing fears that increasing competition and shrinking tourism will further overshadow the industry's future. Ending a transient boom filled with prosperity after their establishment, wildlife parks in China -mostly privately run - are now struggling due to indiscriminate construction. Market analysts say it is difficult for the parks to pay off their investments since most of them plunked down more than 100 million yuan (about US$12 million) when they were built. "Over the decade, China has expanded its wildlife parks from nothing to 30 nationwide, a number exceeding market demand," said Professor Luo Youxian, president of the Tourism School with Chongqing Normal University, southwest China. Chongqing Wildlife World, a major wild animal park, recently closed its office in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, because tourists from neighboring Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou provinces were dispersed by the mushrooming of similar wildlife parks in the region.

Press releases
Brussels, 30 March 2001 FMD: Zoo animals to be vaccinated under certain conditions A meeting of experts took place today in Brussels to consider how certain rare and endangered species in zoos could be protected if an outbreak of foot and mouth disease would create an emergency situation. The participants agreed that all possibly measures, should be taken to avoid introduction of disease and subsequent necessity of killing of endangered susceptible species for disease reasons. In principle, none of the experts was against vaccination of endangered species in certain circumstances. But they clearly underlined that certain technical and legal uncertainties related to the vaccination of endangered species call for a cautious approach to vaccination of these animals. The current risk of introduction of FMD into zoos and animal parks should not be overestimated. It is however significantly higher in those regions where FMD is present in livestock. Therefore all disease prevention measures should be strictly applied irrespective of the use of vaccines in those premises. Internationally accepted animal health standards for trade set by the OIE do not specifically cater for such a particular situation. All experts underlined therefore that the use of vaccine in an animal park or zoo would affect the FMD status of an area/country and trade partners might not accept exports of live animals and non-treated products from that area or country where vaccination against FMD has taken place.

can put almost any kind of animal into any The Canadian Association of ZoologicalParks and Aquariums, the is little incentive for roadside zoos and menageries
http://www.zoocheck.com/programs/zoocheck/roadside/
Roadside Zoos and Menageries Most often, the word zoo conjures of images of large zoological institutions such the Metropolitan Toronto Zoo, the National Zoo in Washington, DC or the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park in California. These zoos, and a handful of other facilities like them, have created a belief that the majority of zoos have become high tech reservoirs of animal science and technology geared towards the preservation of endangered species and conservation education. The public has been led to believe that zoos are modern arks - an important lifeline for vanishing species threatened with extinction. But public perception doesn’t always reflect reality. Roadside Zoos: A Canadian Plague Throughout Canada, hundreds of small zoos, roadside menageries and wildlife displays exhibit wild animals to the public. Sometimes these displays are little more than a few caged animals meant to attract customers to a gift store or garden centre, while others are more like traditional zoos. Commonly referred to as "roadside zoos", these displays comprise more than 90% of all wildlife exhibits in Canada. Estimates place their number at more than 300. Miserable Living Conditions Often started by well-meaning but ill-informed people, most roadside zoos fall far short of providing even the basic necessities of life to the animals in their collections. Barren, poorly designed cages that are so small, they provide almost no opportunity for natural movement or exercise; improper floor surfaces; lack of shelter and privacy; poor quality feed; filthy water containers; cages littered with feces, candy wrappers, rotting food and other garbage; and lack of appropriate veterinary care are common.
