50. AZA Guidelines For Animal Contact With The General Public
Contact animals can provide a valuable educational public programs to zoological parksand aquariums. the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians Infectious
http://www.aazv.org/publicon.htm
AZA GUIDELINES FOR ANIMAL CONTACT WITH THE GENERAL PUBLIC
Drafted by the AZA Animal Health Committee
R. Eric Miller, DVM, Dipl. ACZM
Chair
Nearly every contact with other living organisms, whether it be with humans or other animals, carries some risk of disease transmission. Diseases that are spread from animals to humans are called zoonoses (adj. = zoonotic diseases). Responsible zoos should and do make reasonable attempts to limit the risk of the spread of disease from the animals in their care to their employees and to the general public. For the general public, the risk of contracting disease from most zoo animals is minimal to nonexistent due to their distance and isolation from the animals. However, contact areas for the general public can present increased risks that can be controlled with reasonable precautions. For this paper, contact areas refers to those areas in which there is direct physical contact between animals and people. These precautions are most effective when they are part of an overall preventive medicine program for the zoological park. Risks of zoonotic disease can be markedly reduced by avoiding direct animal contact. However, this forgoes many valuable educational experiences and the establishment of a direct relationship between animals and the public. A reasonable alternative is adequate hand washing for those in direct contact with the animals. Hand washing is perhaps the single most effective personal hygiene procedure for reducing the risk of infection.

The Mother Road W Highlighting native and exotic desert animals, the park is home to 450 animals, representing 125 different species. The cinereous or European black vulture has a wing span of more than nine feet and is as large as the California condor. The animals are retained in open enclosures, often displaying indigenous plants, rocks and trees for a life-like environment. The open enclosures also give visitors a closer look at many of the critters than they would get at a larger animal park. Between animal enclosures, visitors walk through lush, full-scale botanical gardens representing 10 different desert ecosystems. The habitats are interspersed with specialized gardens and wildlife native to each region. From the Chihuahuan desert in Mexico to the arid regions of Africa, plants from the agave to the umbrella thorn (eaten by rhinos and gazelles) and Kokerboom quiver tree (a South African tree reaching 30 feet tall) can be found at the park. Those interested in our own native plant and animal species should journey through Eagle Canyon. Exhibits here feature mountain lions, badgers, golden eagles, bighorn sheep, peccary and coyotes.

Pros
Nice playground, zoo, and general park
Cons animal exhibits not as updated as should be The Bottom Line Overpriced park that is simply headed downhill. Full Review This park is in Albany, Georgia on Philema Road. It's really hard to miss it as it is the largest thing on the road, and there's signs from nearby roads leading to its' direction The prices are decent at a couple of dollars per car load of people, and a couple of more for a van load. Considering the activities there is to do, it should easily be money well spent. There is, of course, a HUGE, recently redone playground. The largest playground I've ever seen to be exact. If you have kids, they're sure to enjoy it. Near the playground is a covered recreation area with picnic tables. Soda machines are located nearby, as well as a restroom area. (The restroom could be a little better kept up with). Camping at the park comes in two forms. Primitive or non-primitive. With primitive you are in a tent in the woods with not much else. With the non-primitive, which is right across from the playgrounds, there is electrical and water hookups as well as trash cans and showers nearby.

General History Highlights The Bear Beginnings Finding a Place for the Zoo The Zoo's First Director The Zoo Grows The Zoological Society Years of Improvements
The man was Herbert Fleishhacker, a San Francisco banker and the president of the Park commission. Fleishhacker believed that no major city should be without the cultural benefits of a local zoo, especially the burgeoning metropolis of San Francisco.
The Bear Beginnings

Finding a Place for the Zoo
The first exhibits consisted of animals transferred from Golden Gate Park. An early inventory list records two zebras, one cape buffalo, five rhesus monkeys, two spider monkeys, and, of course, three elephants: Babe, Virginia and Marjorie, donated by Fleishhacker himself.

Bistany himself saved the day by personally overseeing the shipment, improvising cages and delivering impromptu lectures about the care of each species. By the time Fleishhacker returned from his cruise, the animals were sheltered, tended and healthy.
Bistany passed away in 1935 and was succeeded by Edmund Heller, the former Director of the Milwaukee Zoo. Heller was a noted zoologist with a strong history of field research. After a yearlong African safari, he co-authored with Theodore Roosevelt the reference book Life Histories of African Game Animals.

http://www.captiveanimals.org/elephants/whipsnade.htm
Death at Whipsnade Anna, a 20 year old Asian elephant at Whipsnade 'Wild Animal Park' died on 4th July, three days after her calf was stillborn. The zoo claims Anna's death was due to an infection related to the still birth. Following the death CAPS received information from someone claiming to be an employee of London Zoo. This informant described in graphic terms the events surrounding the surgery on a female elephant that died on 4th July. Our informant alleges that she actually died "in agony several days after the event". The informant implied that the details of events leading up to her death were being withheld. CAPS immediately wrote to the President, Director General and Senior Curator of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), who own the zoo, offering them the opportunity to comment on some of the details that had been described to us. In a letter from the Zoological Director of the Society (Dr Chris West) we are told that our informant was probably "not immediately involved and is not very knowledgeable on veterinary matters". He goes on to say that "Rather than attract hostile criticism the team at ZSL and from other institutions should receive commendation". The ZSL deny any unnecessary surgery on Anna and claim to have brought in vets from other zoos to help. They further assert that Anna did not 'die in agony'.

Franklin Park Zoo's new Dinosaur Kingdom exhibit transforms the naturalistic, outdoor environs of the Bird's World Flight Cage and surrounding grounds into a realistic Mesozoic jungle where life-like moving, roaring, and even breathing, animatronic dinosaur replicas from the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods co-exist together. At Dinosaur Kingdom, you can get up close and personal with twelve giant dinosaurs including Triceratops, Stegosaurus, and an enormous Tyrannosaurus rex, measuring 47 feet long and 25 feet tall! Some of the other "terrible lizards" you will encounter are a flying Pteranodon with a wingspan of 26 feet, a spitting Dilophosaurus, and a long-necked Omeisaurus. Along the way, learn the connections between dinosaurs and modern day birds. After your journey to the past return to the present with a visit to the Dino Dig, an archaeological dig site, to uncover faux fossils from a time gone by.
