The History of Lowry Park Zoo
One of the Zoo's Sumatran Tigers Happy Birthday to Zoo!
In March 2003, Lowry Park Zoo is celebrating its 15th anniversary as one of the greatest Zoo's in North America! On March 5, 1988, a completely redesigned Lowry Park Zoo reopened its doors to the public and is now ranked as one of the top three mid-sized zoos in the country. The Zoo shares a great deal of history with the Tampa Bay Area and wouldn't be the wonderful community resource it is today if it weren't for the generous support of our members, volunteers and community leaders. Tampa's first zoo was established in the late 1930s on the banks of the Hillsborough River in Plant Park. It consisted of a small collection of indigenous animals such as raccoons, alligators and an aviary with a variety of exotic birds. As the collection grew, the animals were moved to the more centrally located Lowry Park in 1957, by Mayor Nick Nuccio, where it was maintained by Tampa's Parks Department. In 1961, General Sumter L. Lowry, Jr. gave the Zoo its most prominent exotic animal, Sheena, an 18-month-old Asian Elephant. This event provided the impetus for expanding and diversifying the animal collection. As the collection continued to grow through the 1970s, the need to upgrade the habitats and present the animals in natural settings became an issue that subsequently resulted in the formation of an organization dedicated to building a first-class zoological garden.

San Diego Wild Animal Park
San Diego has a long history of self-promotion as a tourist mecca. The Hotel del Coronado when completed in 1888 was the largest hotel on the West Coast and marked the beginning of an organized effort to attract visitors to the city. Mission Beach was developed before World War I and became San Diego's "Coney Island". The Panama-Pacific Exposition developed Balboa park in 1915 and led to the organization of the San-Diego-California Club in 1919, the city's first tourist promotion organization, and the opening of the San Diego Zoo (1). The growth of automobility led to an outward dispersal of San Diego. Mission Valley became a suburban shopping mall and hotel center for San Diego after World War II and Mission Bay was reshaped into a park playland. Sea World was located on this Bay in 1964 as the first theme park in San Diego and "constructed a mythical narrative about human relations to nature" (2). The Wild Animal Park continued this effort to transform San Diego into a mythical tourist paradise. During the year 1964, the Stanford Research Institute was asked to evaluate the probable financial success of three alternative developments for the San Pasqual site. The three alternative developments were a conservation farm, a game preserve, and a natural environment zoo. Today the San Diego Wild Animal Park is most like a natural environment zoo, which provides facilities for the public's viewing of the animal collection. The natural environment zoo development was chosen over the conservation farm and game preserve when in fact it cost the most money to develop. Obviously, the cost of development was not the primary deciding factor, but the estimated income was.

San Diego Wild Animal Park
15500 San Pasqual Valley Road, Escondido CA Info: 760-747-8702.
San Diego Wild Animal Park is a 1,800-acre wildlife preserve featuring 38 endangered species of mammals and 11 endangered species of birds amongst its collection of over 3,500 exotic animals. They roam the park as they might have done in their native Asia and Africa (modifications have been implemented to keep species thriving). A tram ride allows guests to see animals roaming in their habitat and for an additional fee, you can get up close and personal with a customized photo safari. Located 32 miles northeast of its sister, San Diego Zoo, and operated under the auspices of the San Diego Zoological Society, the Wild Animal Park doesn't look or feel like a zoo. 20 times larger than the San Diego Zoo, the entry gate doesn't give much away in terms of what to expect but when you wander inside, everything feels different. It's a dream realized for naturalists who thinks zoos are cruel to animals. For tourists accustomed to seeing row upon row of cages and a show, that aspect of the park is very low key. Until you know what's going on, you might ask, "Where's the beef?" What you soon discover as you wind your way back to the tram or zoo train is that this is the heart of action. It is where you will be allowed to watch from a distance in an open car the animals living, grazing, resting and running out on huge plains and rolling hills. Your train passes cliffs where you are challenged to spot the many animals camouflaged in the brown and white rocks. The ride is interesting and can be full of surprises. While animals are well fed, they are not tamed here so you never know what to expect.
