Zimbabwe government defies court ruling that paper can resume publishing AP Saturday December 20, 2003 The Guardian The Zimbabwe government yesterday defied a court order to allow the country's only independent daily newspaper to resume publishing, when riot police shut down its printing works. Nqobile Nyathi, editor of the Daily News, said staff had been preparing an eight-page edition to be printed after the court ruling when armed riot police sealed off entrances to the printing works in western Harare and ordered all staff to go home. "We are trying to sort it out but it doesn't look as if there's much hope," she said.

Zimbabwe government arrests coup plotters
By Chris Talbot 18 March 2004 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author The arrest of a planeload of 64 mercenaries who are now standing trial in Zimbabwe raises questions about the involvement of Western intelligence agencies. On March 7, the plane was stopped at Harare airport when it was on the way to take part in a coup in Equatorial Guinea. One of the leaders of the expedition, Simon Mann, who met the plane in Zimbabwe with two other men, apparently thought he had made a deal with a Zimbabwe military officer, Colonel Tshinga Dube, director of Zimbabwe Defence Industries, to buy $180,000 worth of AK47s, mortars and ammunition. However, it is widely known that du Toit, Mann and another leader of the Zimbabwe team, Simon Witherspoon, have long-standing involvement in Western-backed mercenary operations. The

U.S. travel warning angers Zimbabwe government

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) Zimbabwe's Foreign Ministry and police reacted angrily to the U.S. State Department's warning to American citizens to leave the southern African country because of the security situation, a state-run newspaper reported Saturday. "It is a deliberate distortion of the facts, bent on destroying the tourism industry which is on the mend," Pavelyn Musaka, a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, told the daily newspaper, The Herald. Despite the killing early this week of a white farmer, police superintendent Oliver Mandipaka denied there had been any increase in crime. "We are able to contain the situation to maintain peace and stability. We have never regarded criminals as a threat. This country is one of the safest places in the region," he said. Francis Ngwenya, president of the Hospitality Association of Zimbabwe representing hoteliers and restaurateurs said they would not be affected by the advisory because they had shifted their focus market to Asia, in line with recent calls by President Robert Mugabe.
