On the Arts: Zimbabwe youth are mimicking American culture, minus the context Sunday, August 04, 2002 By Wallace Chuma I received an e-mail from a friend in Harare, Zimbabwe, the other day. It was meant to be an update on the goings-on in that part of the world, given that I am 15,000 miles away. As a parting shot, he told me he had hooked up with a musalad and was having a good time. But he decried that since the relationship started some three weeks ago, his finances have never been the same. He told me the young woman was "demanding" more than what he could afford. As a MAN, though, he had to pretend all was within reach. Wallace Chuma, a news editor from Zimbabwe, is working at the Post-Gazette on a five-month Alfred Friendly Press Fellowship. "I'm in trouble, man. I can't even figure out how I will afford next term's school fees for my sister," he wrote. I felt pity for my friend, who is a fund manager for an insurance firm.

Titus Presler, Transfigured Night: Mission and Culture in Zimbabwe's Vigil Movement. Foreword by John Mbiti. Pretoria, Univ. of South Africa Press, 1999, 375pp., $29.50 (African Initiatives in Christian Mission, no. 4.). To many Zimbabweans the pungwe is a gathering which can evoke deep spiritual meaning, but also suggests, for some, fearful encounters used to oppress and frighten. These night-time gatherings within the Shona tradition originated long before the arrival of the European colonizers, and the missionaries who tried to give them religious legitimacy. Pungwes, before and after the European invasion, have always been a time of spiritual encounter between families and clans, on the one hand, and on the other their spiritual ancestors who are beings offering security, guidance, healing and renewal. In times of deep insecurity and violence, the pungwe could also take on political and military significance. It could incorporate the people in political and liberation modes with all-night singing of liberation songs, and indoctrination in anti-colonial and anti-Christian sentiments by liberation forces fighting the European settlers. This has been true as far back as the late 1800s - and as recently as this year's violent struggle for land reform and redistribution.

Indeed it seems possible that Zimbabwe may also be in advance of a number of more developed countries on this matter, particularly when one adds to the 73% that want to see complete gender equality under the law and in the labour market, a further 10% - 12% among women who do not wish to retain masculine superiority in the home. It is difficult to believe that such advanced and progressive attitudes towards social arrangements of such a basic kind can forever be compatible with a political regime which inspires such a complete lack of trust and a high degree of anxiety. 86. Pope To Bishops Of Zimbabwe - Aftican Culture And The Gospel

"Ad limina Apostolorum": Zimbabwe Bishops' Conference July 7, 1992 Elements of African culture can be fitting vehicles for the Gospel On Tuesday, 7 July, the Holy Father received the Bishops of Zimbabwe in audience to conclude their ad limina visit. The Pope addressed them in English about some of their concerns and the needs of the Church in Zimbabwe.
Dear Brother Bishops, 1. I have eagerly looked forward to this meeting with you, the Bishops of Zimbabwe , on the occasion of your ad limina visit, and I greet you with the words of Saint Paul: "My love be with you all in Christ Jesus" (1 Cor 16:24). In welcoming you, I embrace the clergy, the men and women religious, and the lay faithful of the Archdiocese of Harare and the Dioceses of Bulawayo, Chinhoyi, Gweru, Hwange and Mutare, and in a particular way the new Diocese of Gokwe. Please assure them that the memories of my visit to your country in 1988 have not grown dim. I am grateful to Bishop Reckter for his kind words, and I send a special greeting to Bishop Muchabaiwa and pray for his full recovery. Your presence testifies to the communion in grace which binds you, in the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, to the Bishop of Rome, the visible focus of unity in every age. In making your pilgrimage to the tombs of the Apostles you renew your conviction that the concrete historical reality which is the Church traces its origins back to the Twelve and to our Lord Jesus Christ himself, who established this living Body as the channel and instrument of the salvation he won for us in his death and resurrection.

Zimbabwe has spectacular scenery from the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls to the boulder-strewn Matobo hills. It offers famous and remote national parks with some magnificent opportunities for game viewing; by 4WD, on foot or even on canoe safaris and boat trips. There is a rich cultural heritage and an extraordinary history of ancient civilizations. Nothing catches the spine-tingling magic of a walk in the Zambezi Valley with buffalo and elephant cautiously watching your every move. The magic of a canoe ride where you slide stealthily past a school of hippo. Even a camera can't catch the camaraderie around the campfire or the chill in the air of an early morning game drive. Only the excitement that shines in your eyes will really convince your friends that the wild raft ride through the towering gorges of the Zambezi was not only fun, but also exhilarating. Navigation Info
Meaning "sacred house" in Bantu, it is the largest ancient stone construction south of the Sahara, covering nearly 1,800 acres composed of three distinct sets of ruins known as the Hill Complex, the Valley Complex, and the Great Enclosure. Built between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries by the ancestors of the Shona, one of Zimbabwe's many Bantu-speaking groups, Great Zimbabwe is made of dry masonry with stones shaped and fitted together with no mortar, but marvelously accurate, resembling the skill of the Inca builders of Peru. It is believed that at some point it may have had as many as 18,000 inhabitants. Related books:

    Great Zimbabwe

It is now generally accepted that the ruins of Great Zimbabwe reflect the culture of the Shona peoples, a Bantu speaking ethnic group, who reside in the region today. The name Zimbabwe comes from the Shona. Roughly translated it can mean "Houses of Stone" and are associated with rulership. Upon independence the newly formed state of Zimbabwe took this name for itself. Evidence of what some scholars call Cyclopean Architecture, this structure within the Zimbabwe was made by placing stones atop each other without the use of cement. (Photo and information courtesy of MCC and Great Zimbabwe Described and Explained by P.S. Garlake)

Earliest habitation of the site was around 400 AD. The site consists of a large main stone enclosure and many other structures built in and around it. Building probably occurred in three phases. Zimbabwe was occupied from the 13th to the 15th centuries by ancestors of the Shona. Most archaeologists agree that the Zimbabwe-type stone structures were intended to be indicators of status for the dwelling places for the elite. Modern day Zimbabwean kings, like their African ancestral counterparts in Mali, the Nile Valley and elsewhere, still possess similar dwellings. The wall of the great enclosure, pictured above, measures 244 meters in length, is 5 meters thick at its greatest point, and is 10 meters high. Interestingly, it is tapered so that it is narrowest at the top, suggesting fairly sophisticated architecture. (Photo and information courtesy of MCC)

The holy nature of the place has enabled the woodland to be preserved, while all around trees have been chopped down because of pressure from farmers. T he World Heritage Committee's definition of 'cultural landscape' includes: The organically evolved landscape
    • A relict (or fossil) landscape which shows evidence of previous civilizations, with still very visible features such as prehistoric sites in the Sahara.
    • Continuing landscapes, which retain an active social role in modern society and are linked to a traditional way of life.
Over half a century, the rice paddies of north-eastern Madagascar have become a cultural landscape. Population pressure forced farmers to abandon cloves and grow rice instead. The long-term care of the land calls for building irrigated terraces which have permanently changed the landscape. The associative cultural landscape
    • This shows powerful religious, artistic or cultural associations with the natural element rather than material cultural evidence, which may be insignificant or even absent.
