Zimbabwe History and Culture
Early History Archaeologists have found stone-age implements and pebble tools in several areas of Zimbabwe, a suggestion of human habitation for many centuries, and the ruins of stone buildings provide evidence of early civilization. The most impressive of these sites is the "Great Zimbabwe" ruins, after which the country is named, located near Masvingo. Evidence suggests that these stone structures were built between the 9th and 13th centuries A.D. by indigenous Africans who had established trading contacts with commercial centers on Africa's southeastern coast.

http://www.africatravelling.net/zimbabwe/harare/harare_culture.htm
Harare - Culture H Council, and features on many guided tours of Harare. The Eternal Flame of Independence was lit at the summit on April 18th 1980 to commemorate the birth of Zimbabwe. South of the city centre lies the Civic Centre, which is still being developed. It includes the Magistrate's Court, the Rowan Martin Building, which contains municipal offices, the City Library and Museum. The Harare Sheraton Hotel and Conference Centre and the Polytechnic are near by, and so are the Agricultural Showgrounds, the National Sports Centre and the Courtauld Concert Hall. Exploring Mbare, where the famous Musika (market) is found, is probably an extreme example of this, but it does reflect the housing conditions of a majority of Harare's urban population. Apart from Mbare, with its appeal for the adventurous, these areas don't feature on any tourist itinerary yet, but will be of interest to anyone wanting to see more than just the pretty face of Zimbabwe. Besides nightclubs and restaurants, nightlife in Harare is somewhat limited-but by African standards it beats all other centers above South Africa. By day, you can visit shops and markets, art and sculpture galleries, and walk around the business district to check the pulse of this African city. The government of Zimbabwe faces a wide variety of difficult economic problems as it struggles to consolidate earlier progress in developing a market-oriented economy. Its involvement in the war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, for example, has already drained hundreds of millions of dollars from the economy. Badly needed support from the IMF suffers delays in part because of the country's failure to meet budgetary goals. Inflation rose from an annual rate of 25% in January 1998 to 47% in December and will almost certainly continue to increase in 1999. The economy is being steadily weakened by AIDS; Zimbabwe has one of the highest rates of infection in the world. Per capita GDP, which is twice the average of the poorer sub-Saharan nations, will increase little if any in the near-term, and Zimbabwe will suffer continued frustrations in developing its agricultural and mineral resources.

Issue 36 • January 2002
home contents STREET CHILDREN The second part of the article based on a workshop by Professor Michael Bourdillon of the University of Zimbabwe The Children on our Streets Part II: The Situation
We now move on to look at the situation in which we find street children, and in which street children find themselves. When we try to understand the problems faced by street children, rather than by us middle or upper class academics and administrators. we quickly find that we need to know something about the home background of the children. We need to look at their families, and what they are leaving in order to be on the streets. Overcrowding and poverty are obvious reasons for going onto the streets. I want now to point out more subtle problems that are arising in Africa’s cities; and in particular to social and cultural changes that result from the move from an agricultural life-style to a modern urban situation. Urban Culture I am going to speak about urban culture. ‘Culture is a word that contains many different meanings, and is a word we should use with caution if we use it at all. Nevertheless, it is a convenient word because it covers many things. We need to think a little about what culture is. People often speak about African culture, or particular ethnic cultures. This includes the idea of customs that are ‘traditional’. What is traditional? Just this week, the museum in Harare set up an exhibition of folk ways of healing. They were going to call it ‘traditional’ until they realised that rural clinics and the use of hospitals have themselves become traditional. It is part of what children learn from their parents.

THE RICH CULTURAL HERITAGE
Prince Edward School seeks to build balanced gentlemen. To achieve this goal it provides academic education to develop the mind, sporting activities to develop the body, and cultural activities to develop one's personality and character. Through cultural activities boys get to practice necessary social skills, develop natural talents, share ideas, and give expression to creative urges.
Cultural activities are a release from the pressure of the classroom where boys can interact with other class mates and boys from different levels and classes in the school. There is also the opportunity to interact with school children of different schools, especially girls as it is important in an all-boys school that contact is made with girls to build health relationships in the future.
Prince Edward School allows for any club to be formed, as long as they are 15 boys or more who wish to do that club. As a result we have more clubs and social activities than any other school in Zimbabwe. Boys have an opportunity to do things that after school they will may difficult to continue, like playing chess, bridge, or darts in a structured manner where they meet others with similar interests on a weekly basis. School bonding and pride are developed when the whole school supports an activity, like its School Play - which is always a very public expression of the School.
