Sadza ne Nyama: A Shona Staple Dish
BACK Introduction
Sadza ne Nyama ("Sadza [and Meat Stew]") or simply Sadza is the staple diet for most of Zimbabwe's indigenous peoples. It is a two part recipe with sadza on one and the accompanying stew or vegetable relish on the other. Sadza is a generic term used to describe thickened porridge made out of any number of pulverized grains . The most common form of sadza is made with white maize (corn) mealie meal. Despite the fact that maize is actually an imported food crop to Zimbabwe (circa 1890), it has become the chief source of starch and carbohydrate and the most popular meal for indigenous peoples of Zimbabwe. Sadza is to Zimbabweans what rice is to the Chinese or pasta to the Italians. Nyama
Nyama is the Shona word for meat. Which kind of meat is qualified by naming the animal or beast from with it comes. For example beef is nyama ye mombe where mombe is the Shona word for cattle. Similarly chicken is nyama ye huku where huku is the Shona word for chicken. Nyama ye

Throughout the 1990’s, a wide spectrum of civic organizations began to emerge as an increasingly articulate public voice for the aspirations of citizens. However, these groups had little experience or weak capacity for channeling advocacy efforts to achieve policy change through the legislative process. In Batsirai's Classroom: An Innovative Biology Class in Zimbabwe
Article # : Section : CULTURE Issue Date : 2,040 Words Author : Scott Johnston
Scott Johnston is assistant professor of education at Carroll College in Waukesha, Wisconsin. This essay is based on his doctoral research and funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation (Division of International Programs).
A-level teachers receive a select group of students. Therefore, most assume that their students (called sixth-formers) know how to learn. Teachers assume that their job is to give more facts. Batsirai was different. At the heart of his ideas about teaching was an emphasis on the importance of motivation. He believed that the students' intellectual development had to do with their exposure to the process of learning. Another factor he considered important was each student's social and educational background. Many prospective A-level students must transfer from schools that do not offer advanced courses in the subjects they wish to pursue. Also the quality of teaching varies from school to school. A student from a poor district might well have had less exposure to concepts in biology than a student from the mission school.

Introduction
This complex of ruins from which the modern nation of Zimbabwe took its name is one of the country's greatest historical and cultural attractions. As Paul Tingay's helpful guide explains, Great Zimbabwe, the largest ruins in Africa, covers almost 1,800 acres. Sited on an open wooded plain surrounded by hills, the ruins comprise the vast Great Enclosure complex, and on a nearby kopje the Hill Complex, a veritable castle of interlocking walls and granite boulders, while all around in the valley lie a myriad other walls. The ruins feature an array of chevron, herringbone and many other intricate patterns in its walls, and the astonishing fact is that despite the dry-stone technique used in Great Zimbabwe's construction (no mortar binds the stone blocks), the complex has endured for seven centuries. On Hybridity and Postcolonialism
Antwan Jefferson, English 119 , Brown University, 1999
Part 3 of "Establishing Literary Independence: Hybridity in Zimbabwean Literature" Defining post-colonialism, as John Yang points out in his essay " Representation and Resistance ," is a difficult on two counts: (1) to define it in its most basic form as "that which happens after political independence" is to miss many possible applications of the concept; and (2) to define post-colonialism according to its political implications shifts attention away from the importance of the work as literature and lessens the intentions of the author. At best, defining post-colonialism can be considered a work in progress: Post-colonial literature and post-colonial studies have the ability...to control...the direction and definition of its label[ing]. In other words, "post-colonialism" is a definition in progress. This definition in progress further problematizes post-colonial literature because without a solid source, scholars can debate forever what constitutes a post-colonial work and if that work gives justice to post-colonial literature as a whole. Although there are apparent challenges to define post-colonialism fully, the basic definition suggested by Yang will provide sufficient framing for this essay: "A body of...works produced by a previously colonized nation." In Zimbabwean literature, the term applies because it indicates the status of the country twenty years ago: under European (British) government. [For more info. concerning the governmental conflict in Rhodesia, see Alice Dadirai Kwaramba's discussion of
