Zimbabwe A Pronunciation Key Zimbabwe [Bantu,=stone houses], ruined city, SE Zimbabwe, near Fort Victoria. It was discovered by European explorers c.1870, and some believed it the biblical Ophir, where King Solomon had his mines. From 1890 to 1900 some 100,000 gold mining claims were staked out there, but all proved barren. Modern archaeological evidence has shown that Zimbabwe was first occupied by the earliest Iron Age people in the 3d cent. It was abandoned sometime thereafter until it was reoccupied in the late 9th cent. or early 10th cent. The remaining ruins include a massive wall, constructed in the 11th cent., a strong fortress, nearby dwellings, and an elliptically shaped enclosure, commonly called the Temple. The buildings were once richly decorated with stone carvings and gold and copper ornaments. Archaeologists believe that the city was constructed by a local African culture with little outside influence. See G. Caton-Thompson

Zimbabwe History
Zimbabwe has been populated since the Stone Age, and the ruins of Great Zimbabwe, dating back to the ancient African kingdom of Munhumatapa, testify to the advanced level of civilization that existed before European contact. Long home to Shona speakers, the area was invaded by the Ndebele in the early 19th century. Hard on their heels came the British South Africa Company, headed by Cecil Rhodes. A man of ruthless ambition (or, as Evelyn Waugh put it, "a visionary, and almost all he saw was a hallucination"), Rhodes dreamed of linking Capetown to Cairo. While his great railroad failed, the region he colonized for Great Britain became known as Rhodesia. (The prestigious Rhodes Scholarship also carries his name.)

Climate
Zimbabwe has one of the finest climates in the world, warm without being oppressive and with daily average sunshine ranging from four to 10, hours all year round. The climate is sub-tropical with the rainy season normally stretching from November to March. The winter season is from May to July with generally dry weather. Light summer clothing is suitable from September to May and warmer clothing for the rest of the year. The period August to October is very hot and dry. Generally the days are bright and sunny, the nights clear and cool. Both temperature and rainfall are directly influenced by altitude. The Highveld and the Eastern Highlands have lower temperatures which the lowveld and the Zambezi basin are hotter and winter. In the latter, summer temperature can soar to over 35 degrees Celsius compared with the Highveld range of 25 degrees Celsius to 35 s degrees Celsius. Day time temperatures range between 13 to 20 degrees Celsius but fall to -5 degrees Celsius at night.
Economy
Zimbabwe's major trading partners are South Africa, the UK, Germany, the USA, and Botswana. Significant trade also takes place under the auspices of the Southern African Development Community (SADC); the Preferential Trade Agreement of Southern and East African states (PTA) or the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA); and the Lome (IV) Convention. About one third of Zimbabwe's exports are destined for the regional markets, comprising South Africa, SADC, and PTA/COMESA. The remainder is shared between the European Union and the rest of the world. The pattern is relatively similar for imports although the rest of the world tends to contribute a little more than a third.

Courtesy of Morpheus Great Zimbabwe: Houses of Stone Located in the south central African nation of Zimbabwe are the ruins of monuments and cities built of stone. These ruins extend a radius of 100 to 200 miles, a diameter almost as great as the entire nation of France. Believed to have been built by southern Africans about 600-1,000 years ago they are evidence of a thriving culture in the heart of southern Africa. Enclosure of Zimbabwe ruins
Zimbabwe Architecture
Earliest habitation of the site was around 400 AD. The site consists of a large main stone enclosure and many other structures built in and around it. Building probably occurred in three phases. Zimbabwe was occupied from the 13th to the 15th centuries by ancestors of the Shona. Most archaeologists agree that the Zimbabwe-type stone structures were intended to be indicators of status for the dwelling places for the elite. Modern day Zimbabwean kings, like their African ancestral counterparts in Mali, the Nile Valley and elsewhere, still possess similar dwellings. The wall of the great enclosure, pictured above, measures 244 meters in length, is 5 meters thick at its greatest point, and is 10 meters high. Interestingly, it is tapered so that it is narrowest at the top, suggesting fairly sophisticated architecture. Wall of Great Enclosure
Around 1000AD people began to build large stone buildings for their kings, positioning them away from land. Many believe this move may have occurred to escape the dangerous tsetse fly. About 150 of these great ruins similar to Great Zimbabwe exist today. Many of these have been severely impacted and almost demolished, at least 50, as a result of the hunger for gold by Europeans. The population of Great Zimbabwe, previously estimated at 1,000 before the outside dwelling areas were taken into consideration, is now believed to have been as high as 18,000.

11 October 1996 Extended Family Breaking Up Fast in Zimbabwe
By Itai Musengeyi, correspondent HARARE, Zimbabwe (PANA) - Like elsewhere in Africa, a combination of socio-economic factors are fast eroding Zimbabwe's age old traditional extended family system. Urbanisation, industrialisation, economic hardships, adoption of Western values and widening of socio-economic gaps have disrupted family life in a nation which 50 years ago was quite close-knit. Extended family ties have been slackening over the years as people of this southern African country of over 10.5 million become more concerned with their immediate families, with some even failing to adequately feed and clothe their spouses and children. "Due to economic hardships some people now deliberately avoid extended families and do not want their addresses known to relatives," observes Rodreck Mupedziswa, deputy principal of the University of Zimbabwe's school of social work. In Zimbabwe, the cost of living has been escalating since the government of President Robert Mugabe introduced economic reforms in 1991.

    What is MBIRA the organization
MBIRA is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to educate the public regarding traditional Shona music of Zimbabwe, including mbira music, and to develop a library of recordings to preserve that music. One of the primary objectives of MBIRA is to ensure that Shona music activities outside Zimbabwe benefit Zimbabwean musicians and instrument makers. This will generally support the preservation of traditional music in Zimbabwe. About Erica Azim , Director
What is mbira the Zimbabwean musical tradition
A Shona mbira piece consists of a basic cyclical pattern which includes numerous intertwined melodies, often with contrasting rhythms. The extensive possibilities for rhythmic and melodic variation render each performance unique. When two mbiras are played together, the interlocking parts result in rich polyphony and polyrhythms. A traditional repertoire of hundreds of pieces is transmitted from generation to generation, and pieces popular today are known to have been played over 700 years ago. At traditional Zimbabwean ceremonies (mapira), ancestors are called by performing their favorite songs; thus, the same pieces are retained in the repertoire over the centuries.

By 1500, Great Zimbabwe dominated the Zambezi Valley both militarily and commercially (the Mwenemutapa empire); because of this, the new ideas about divine kingship spread throughout the valley and changed the social structures of most of the Bantu people living there.
