Those two new zebras at the zoo just aren't right. They don't look or act like any zebras anyone has ever seen. So the narrator of this rhyming story camps out in a tree near the zebra cage, waiting for the zebras to reveal their true nature. This Read-Aloud Book, written in rhyme form, introduces readers to the /z/ sound.
Build Background
Ask students if they have ever visited a zoo. What kinds of animals did they see there? Did they see zebras? Ask students what zebras look and act like.
Tell students that this book is written in rhyme. Read the first line and ask students to come up with a word that rhymes with zoo. Use other familiar rhymes as references. Also explain that a poem's syllables follow a rhythm or "beat." Introduce the /z/ sound and the letter z. Explain that students can hear the /z/ sound at the beginning of words such as zebra and in the middle of words such as crazy.

Steve Sorden, DVM, PhD, DACVP; Iowa State University DATES:
May 20 - July 1st, 2004
Interactive Sessions: Thursdays; 5/20, 5/27, 6/3, 6/10, 6/17, 6/24; 10:00 -11:00 PM ET (USA) Course Description: Increased international movement of people and animals, and the current geopolitical climate, make incursions of exotic diseases more likely than ever before. The national response to an exotic disease incursion begins with the local practicing veterinarian, who must be able to rapidly recognize the clinical signs and scenarios that are suggestive of various exotic diseases. This course will review the major exotic and emerging animal diseases, emphasizing the clinical signs and gross lesions of these diseases in various species and the role of the practitioner and other professionals. Major emphasis will be placed on including exotic diseases in the differential diagnosis of various clinical presentations and the importance of laboratory support for the diagnosis of both “horses and zebras.” Course Outline: Week 1:(May 20):
Overview of exotic animal diseases: global perspectives, potential modes of entry, diagnosis, response and control, role of the practitioner

Zebras Zebras are horses in black and white stripes! They are very sociable animals. They like to travel in large herds that are made up of many small family units.
A zebra family usually consists of one stallion (male zebra), several mares (female zebras), and their foals (young zebras). Because a herd may have hundreds of zebras, staying close to its family can be a very challenging task for a zebra. Scientists believe that a zebra can recognize its family members by their unique black-and-white stripe patterns. Therefore, even if a foal wanders off and gets mixed up with other zebra families, it can always reunite with its own family by looking for special fur designs that its siblings or parents have.

Tulsa East Central got three goals from Luke Ortez on its way to a 4-1 victory against Claremore on Tuesday in a first-round playoff game at the Andy Payne Athletic Complex. The loss brought to an end a stellar season for the Zebras. Claremore, which won the district championship, finished the year with an 8-5-1 record. The Cardinals, who outshot the Zebras 13-10 in the first half, wasted little time in claiming the lead. Ortez hit paydirt in the fourth minute, then found the back of the net again three minutes later. Miguel Peralta capped the first-half scoring with a goal in the 21st minute. The second half was more of a defensive struggle with each team getting only three shots on goal. East Central put the game away in the 47th minute as Ortez completed his hat trick. The Zebras got on the board in the 65th minute when Nathan Lusby scored off a pass from Steven Lunsford.

A zebra's stripes may make him invisible at night when lions prowl. Corel A: To turn invisible, at night. The sky is dark, overcast, and starless. It's between 1959 and 1999 and Anthony R.E. Sinclair was studying buffalo and wildebeest in Serengeti Park, Tanzania. A hill looms as a darker mass against the dark sky; black treetops fringe the dark-blue horizon. Sinclair dons "night vision" goggles to watch the animals with enhanced cat-like sight. Now the ground appears black and the sky a greenish glow on the phosphorous screen. A wildebeest silhouettes black against the screen's sky. Suddenly one moving shape disappears, then reappears seconds later. Sinclair blinks and wonders. It happens again and again.

Revised: April 2004.
Student consultants, known as "Zebras", are available to assist students with the basics of using ACS computer labs. They are called Zebras because of their distinctive black and white shirts.
Zebras can help you with electronic mail, word processing, programming tools, locally-supported packages, printing, and on-line documentation. However, if you are seeking help with software applications and techniques that are specific to your course, you will need to speak with your instructor or TA instead of a Zebra.
Zebras are available when classes are in session during the fall, winter, and spring quarters (but not during finals week). They are available for very limited hours during the summer.
