A popular time for all the animals at HiView is "Dinnertime" Llamas are also right at home in the environment of HiView. Some facts about the LLama Llamas are members of the Camel family. Technically, they are camelids.
In the New World, there are four different camelids. Three are in the genus Lama, the llama, the alpaca, and the guanaco. One is in its own genus vigunae, the vicuna. The llama and the alpaca are both domesticated animals, and have never been wild. The llama is considerably larger than the alpaca. In South American, llamas are used for pack animals, production of fiber for rugs and ropes, meat, and even used their dung for fuel. In South America, the alpaca is used for fine fiber production, meat, and their dung for fuel.
In the United States, llamas are used for light draft, fiber production, show, companion and guard animals. Alpacas are used for fine fiber production and show in the United States. Information about the Llama was gathered from llamaweb.com

27. Terry Thornton's Bird Keeping Experiences.
General information and pictures of gouldians, zebras, bengalese, diamond doves, and fife canaries. Also has a birdkeeping diary.
http://freespace.virgin.net/thornton.applehaigh/main.htm
Gouldians Zebras Bengalese Diamond Doves ... My Awards A little about me and this site:- I am Terry Thornton , 50 years young, married to Christine my long suffering wife for 27 years and living in the county of South Yorkshire in England. I have been keeping and breeding birds, mainly foreign finches, for about 23 years. When we moved to our present home I started out with 6 breeding cages and a small flight inside an 8 foot by 6 foot (2.4m x 1.8m) insulated shed. My collection at that time was made up of a few grey and fawn zebra finches and a pair of diamond doves. Eventually as always happens numbers increased and more accommodation was required. I constructed 2 more cages under the windows along the side opposite my original cages. Soon even this was not enough as the number of breeding pairs increased, bengalese had now been added. Out came the flight and three sets of triple breeding cages were constructed with the original 3 sets of double breeders being relocated at the end of the shed. Unfortunately when I came to install the triple cages they were found to be ¼ inch (6mm) too long. After much screaming and tearing out of hair I finally took them apart and shortened them. Approximately 14 years ago I decided that I needed more room for my growing collection so my 14 foot by 8 foot (4.3m x 2.4m) greenhouse was converted into a further shed 5 foot by 8 foot (1.5m x 2.4m) with 9 foot by 8 foot (2.7m x 2.4m) aviary attached. The aviary was planted, mainly with an elderberry bush (quick growing, as aviary plants have to be to withstand the constant nibbling from little beaks). Six cages were built into the small shed, three at each side with a flight at the back leading out into the aviary. Now things were really moving with peach faced lovebirds, hecks grass finches and star finches swelling the ranks. The number of zebra finches and budgerigars was increasing rapidly, as they do, and I knew the present setup would soon be too small to accommodate the growing numbers and increasing variety.

28. Plains Zebra
zebras stay in family groups of a stallion, or male, and several mares, but different families will come together in huge herds of hundreds of zebras.
http://www.pbs.org/kratts/world/africa/zebra/
Plains Zebra Scientific Name: Equus burchelli Home: Savanna grasslands of eastern Africa Description: Sleek, plump, short-legged horse with broad black and white stripes, black nose, and a short, bristle-like mane that stands up The plains zebra grazes two-thirds of the day on red oat grass, leaves, bark, roots and stems. Excellent hearing and vision help a zebra to keep alert for predators like lions and hyenas. Zebras stay in family groups of a stallion, or male, and several mares, but different families will come together in huge herds of hundreds of zebras. Herds will mingle with wildebeests, ostriches, and antelope while they graze, and even come to depend on them as additional protection against predators! Zebras are always busy and alert, and very noisy - - they make a lot of sounds! Zebras are only about four feet tall at the shoulder! Zebras communicate with each other! Mother zebras whinney when seperated from their foals, or babies, and nicker to warn of danger. The zebra alarm is a yelping bark they all make as they run away! Stripes make a zebra feel right at home zebra stripes help to keep zebras in close-knit groups! Stripes may also help to confuse predators, but they encourage zebras to make friends with each other!

Can zebras be domesticated?
No, zebras cannot be domesticated. They are unpredictable and are known to attack people. To be domesticated, animals must meet certain criteria. For example, they must have a good disposition and should not panic under pressure. Zebras' unpredictable nature and tendency to attack preclude them from being good candidates for domestication. For more information about the criteria for domestication see : The Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Animal Attraction Fact Sheet: Why were so few animals domesticable While attempts at domestication have failed, some individuals have had success training and even hybridizing zebras! Common zebra hybrids: Zorse (horse + zebra) and Zonkey (donkey + zebra). Zebra hybridization has actually been in existence at least a century. One of the pioneers in the field was J.C. Ewart, author of The Penycuik Experiments in 1899.
