The Story of Aviation in Southern Rhodesia
Airline HISTORY from June 1946 Extracts from article published in Air Zimbabwe in flight magazine "Skyhost" 1996
Air Zimbabwe can trace its long history back directly to the formation, on 1 June 1946, of Central African Airways (CAA), which came into being as the joint airline of Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) and Nyasaland (now Malawi), with 50 percent, 35 per- cent and 15 percent respectively of its share capital being held by the governments of those three countries. CAA At its formation, CAA acquired some of the assets and personnel of Southern Rhodesia Air Services (SRAS), a combined airline and communications squadron that had been formed at the beginning of World War II from the dissolution of Rhodesia and Nyasaland Airways (RANA).
RANA had itself been formed in October 1933 by the merger of two small privately owned companies which, in the late 1920s, had provided Central Africa with its first "regular" air services. (Those inverted commas are necessary: given the undeveloped state of the territory, its airfields, its navigational aids and the aircraft themselves, that marvellously elastic term 'technical delay' could, in those pioneering days, be read as meaning almost anything from a puncture to a lion having eaten the pilot!) Promotion of humanitarian law
In Botswana, the ICRC and the Federation carried out a joint mission to the National Society to help it resume its activities.
In Malawi, the situation remained relatively calm during the year, despite some tension within the governing coalition which led to the withdrawal of one of the constituent parties, depriving the President's party of its parliamentary majority. The ICRC supervised the construction of a hospital ward at Zomba prison to provide medical care for the detainees and completed the installation of new kitchens in the country's two largest prisons. Since the completion in 1995 [12] of its programme of visits to Malawi's prisons to examine the material and psychological conditions of detention, the ICRC had sought to ensure, by drawing attention to their situation, that its work in aid of the detainees there would be continued. These efforts bore fruit and in 1996 an organization, Penal Reform International, stepped in on their behalf.
Cooperation with the National Societies
In October 1996, Mozambique celebrated the second anniversary of peace and democracy in the country. Earlier in the year, in June, the ICRC had signed a three-year cooperation agreement with the National Society to help it to work in a peacetime environment. It was the first agreement of this kind to be concluded in the region.

About the ICRC ICRC activities The ICRC worldwide Focus ... Annual Report Annual Report Harare Regional delegation (Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe)
Introduction
In 1994 a number of positive changes came to southern Africa, affecting practically all the countries covered by the regional delegation. Democratic elections in Mozambique and South Africa were complemented by those in Malawi, where a new government was voted in, putting an end to 30 years of autocratic rule. The 1.5 million Mozambican refugees in the region had almost all returned home by the end of 1994, lifting a major burden from Malawi, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In Namibia and Botswana the governments in place were returned in general elections. Only in Lesotho did the situation deteriorate, but the crisis was settled by the end of the year.
The principal activities of the regional delegation in 1994 included the continuation of detention-related activities in Malawi; the promotion of international humanitarian law, particularly in Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia and Zambia; coordinating and supporting tracing work carried out by National Red Cross Societies; and helping to strengthen the capacity of National Societies in regard to emergency preparedness, information, dissemination and the development of their internal telecommunications systems.
From 1 January 1995 the Harare delegation will also cover Mozambique, while Lesotho and Swaziland will be covered by the regional delegation in Pretoria.

AMECEA (then ITEBEA) was the brainchild of the Catholic Bishops of Tanganyika (today's Tanzania). In 1960 they proposed, through the then Apostolic Delegation (today's Nunciature) in Nairobi, that there be collaboration among Catholic Bishops in the region. That time the following countries were under the Nairobi Apostolic Delegation namely Kenya, Nyasaland (today's Malawi), Uganda, Sudan, Tanganyika and Northern Rhodesia (today's Zambia). When these other Bishops' Conferences agreed to the necessity of working together, the then Apostolic Delegate (today's Nuncio) Monsignor Guido Del Mestri consulted Rome. Rome gave its approval. REASONS FOR SOLIDARITY
There were at that time winds of change in both the Church and society in this region.

http://afrec.mem-algeria.org/en/afrec.htm
I History and Objective In 1980 African countries have realized the seriousness and the preoccupying situation of the African economy in general and the energy sector in particular. Consequently, the Extraordinary Economic Summit of AUO heads of states and government held in Lagos (Nigeria) in 1980 adopted the Lagos Plan of Action (L.P.A) which contains, among others, short, medium and long term actions aimed at solving the severe energy problems facing our continent. For the adequate implementation of the recommendations of the LPA in energy sector, the Lagos Conference has perceived a urgent necessity to establish an appropriate institutional framework. In this connection, the creation of an African Energy Commission was specifically recommended. The African Energy Commission would be a Continental African structure with a given responsibility to ensure, co-ordinate and harmonize the protection, preservation, development and the national exploitation, marketing and integration of the energy resources of the African continent. Besides, the importance and the main role of energy and its important contribution to industrialization, poverty eradication and rural development, global and sustainable development, as well as co-operation and regional and sub-regional integration, are not to be proved anymore.
