BACKGROUND ON CHICHEWA AND RELATED LANGUAGES
Chichewa is a language of the Bantu language family, spoken in parts of East, Central, and Southern Africa. It is spoken in Malawi where, from 1968 until recently, it has served as the national language. It is also spoken in Mozambique, especially in the provinces of Tete and Niassa, in Zambia (especially in the Eastern Province), as well as in Zimbabwe where, according to some estimates, it ranks as the third most widely used local language, after Shona and Ndebele. The countries of Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique constitute the central location of Chichewa. Because of the national language policy adopted by the Malawi government, which promoted Chichewa through active educational programs, media usage and, other research activities carried out under the auspices of the Chichewa Board, out of a population of around 9 million, upwards of 65% have functional literacy or active command of this language. In Mozambique , the language goes by the name of Chinyanja, and it is native to 3.3% of a population numbering approximately 11.5 million . In Tete province it is spoken by 41.7% of a population of 777,426 and, it is the first language of 7.2% of the population of Niassa province, whose population totals 506,974 (see Firmino, 1995).

Monday, 6 March, 2000, 17:04 GMT The floods: A regional disaster
South African helicopters rescue flood victims
The flooding in southern Africa, which has left hundreds dead and around 1.25 million homeless, is the worst in living memory.
While Mozambique has borne the brunt of the disaster, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia and the island of Madagascar have all been affected.
Rivers across the region burst their banks last week as, Cyclone Eline, swept in, bringing new rains to lands already waterlogged by more than two weeks of storms.
Thousands have been displaced
In Zimbabwe, more than 100 people have died, and an estimated 250,000 have been left homeless, exacerbating the country's worst economic crisis in 20 years.
Crops and village granaries have been washed away, destroying food supplies, and roads, bridges and dams have been destroyed. Reports say an estimated $10bn worth of damage has been caused to crops, livestock, infrastructure and property. The government is warning that thousands of people face starvation because food distribution had been virtually impossible in some areas.

Introduction:
Stewart Edward White, a hunter, set out from Nairobi in 1913 and discovered the Serengeti . The park covers 14,763 sq km of endless rolling plains , which reach up to the Kenyan border and extends almost to Lake Victoria . The park is flourishing with magnificent wildlife. An estimated 3 million large mammals roam the plains. People of the Maasai Tribe called it Siringitu - 'the place where the land moves on forever.' The Serengeti region covers the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Maswa Game Reserve, the Loliondo, Grumeti and Ikorongo Controlled Areas and the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. A staggering 90,000 tourists visit the Park each year. Serengeti is renown for the migration of wildlife. More than a million wildebeest and about 200,000 zebras travel south from the northern hills to the southern plains for the short rains every October and November, and then journey west and north after the long rains in April, May and June.
Wildlife:
The Serengeti boasts large herds of antelope including Patterson's eland

UNESCO Prizes U NESCO P EER Regional Programme of Education for Emergencies, Communication and Culture of Peace The Following information is reprinted from the UNESCO PEER Newsletter: January - June 1999 C ulture of P eace N etwork UNESCO PEER has launched an initiative for the constitution of a Regional Culture of Peace Network (CPN) in the Great Lakes Region and the Horn of Africa. The underlying principle is that modalities and mechanisms of implementation of a culture of peace or conflict resolution are to be reinforced at three levels: decision-makers, intellectuals, grassroots organizations and communities. CPN's purpose is threefold:
  • To develop a common understanding and vision for the culture of peace networks in the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes Region. To promote mutually empowering relationships and strategies for action. To provide an information databank, act as an information clearing house for the network and to develop a directory and website.
  • The first CPN meeting took place in Nairobi on 12 April 1999 and comprised 20 local NGOs involved in various activities in Kenya ranging from conflict resolution to peace education, the promotion of inter-religious dialogue and gender issues.

    History
Zambia's history goes back to the debut of Homo sapiens : evidence of human habitation going back 100,000 years has been found at Kabwe, north of Lusaka. Beginning around 1000 AD, Swahili-Arab slave-traders gradually penetrated the region from their city-states on the eastern coast of Africa. Between the 14th and 16th centuries a Bantu-speaking group known as the Maravi migrated from present-day Congo (Za¯re) and established kingdoms in eastern and southeastern Zambia. In the 18th century, Portuguese explorers following the routes of Swahili-Arab slavers from the coast into the interior became the first known European visitors. After the Zulu nation to the south began scattering its neighbors, victims of the Difaqane (forced migration) began arriving in Zambia in the early 19th century. Squeezed out of Zimbabwe, the Makalolo people moved into southern Zambia, pushing the Tonga out of the way and grabbing Lozi territory on the upper Zambezi River. The celebrated British explorer David Livingstone travelled up the Zambezi in the 1850s, searching for a route into the interior of Southern Africa, hoping to introduce Christianity and European civilisation to combat the horrors of the slave trade. Livingstone's efforts attracted missionaries, who in turn brought hunters and prospectors in their wake. In the 1890s much of Zambia came under the control of the British South Africa Company (BSAC), which sought to prevent further Portuguese expansion in the area.

Introduction [Top of Page] Background: The territory of Northern Rhodesia was administered by the South Africa Company from 1891 until takeover by the UK in 1923. During the 1920s and 1930s, advances in mining spurred development and immigration. The name was changed to Zambia upon independence in 1964. In the 1980s and 1990s, declining copper prices and a prolonged drought hurt the economy. Elections in 1991 brought an end to one-party rule, but the subsequent vote in 1996 saw blatant harassment of opposition parties. The Cosafa Castle Cup marches towards its first decade of competition, this year marking its eight edition.
The annual southern African championship has delivered four different winners and also seen another three countries play in the final, proving the competitive nature of the event.
Zimbabwe are the holders for the 2004 edition having easily disposed of Malawi in the 2003 final to grab the trophy for the second time.
They now join Angola and Zambia as two-time winners of the event. The first side to win the Cosafa Castle Cup three times gets to keep the impressive silver trophy.
The Cosafa Castle Cup enjoys a wide profile, well beyond the borders of its member countries.
Live television coverage, unprecedented for a competition of this nature, takes the event into the homes of people right throughout Africa and also into Europe and South America.
The tournament is one of a kind on the international calendar, given that no other regional event can boast a similar longevity or as wide a reach as the Cosafa Castle Cup.
