A brief history of the SIYB Regional Programme
SIYB originated from business management training materials called "Look After Your Firm" which had been developed by the Swedish Employers' Confederation. During the late 1970's, the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) funded an ILO project which adapted these materials to suit the needs of small entrepreneurs in developing countries. This new material was named “Improve Your Business” (IYB). At the same time, the ILO developed a specific training methodology, which was based on participatory learning and with an action oriented approach. The IYB training materials and methodology together became the IYB programme.
1983: IYB is introduced to Africa
In 1983, the ILO established the IYB Regional Project Office for Eastern Africa in Nairobi, Kenya

History and Background The IUCN Regional Office for Southern Africa was established in Zimbabwe in 1987 to serve the Southern African Region in the development of modern skills in conservation and natural resource management. IUCN ROSA coordinates such regional services to over 72 members (9 government agencies, 8 State agencies, 3 Affiliates and 52 NGOs) in 11 countries through its regional support programmes, regional networks, and its country offices in Botswana, Mozambique, Zambia and South Africa. Key support to fulfilling IUCN-ROSA's mission are the country offices in Botswana, Mozambique, Zambia and South Africa. These offices are part of the Secretariat, and they play an important role in programmatic synergy and add value to IUCN's work in the region. In addition, there are also project offices in Malawi and Namibia. IUCN ROSA seeks to support and complement its membership and their own priorities. The underlying objective in all IUCN ROSA's activities and programmes is capacity building and catalysing action. Developing, coordinating and supporting programmatic partnerships is the preferred operational mechanism supporting this objective. Additional services include the provision of objective and scientifically based advisory services and technical assistance, training inputs and programmes, and fora for national and inter-regional dialogue, networking, debate and conflict resolution.

History of the membership The continent's position as a crossroads between the Americas, Europe and Asia also lays it open to transnational crimes such as traffic in weapons, illicit drug trafficking, illegal immigration, traffic in stolen motor vehicles and fraud, which can only be stopped by international co-operation. Seeking and locating the criminals involved poses problems relating to information exchange, international identification and arrests with a view to extradition. This is why Interpol-in accordance with Article 2 (1) of its Constitution-ensures the closest possible co-operation between the criminal police authorities of all member countries, including those in Africa. Crime is not associated with a particular region and is certainly not a problem for Africa alone. Ever since it was established, the International Criminal Police Organization - Interpol has been seen by countries all over the world as an institution whose principles and objectives correspond to universal aspirations for human rights, public safety and the fight against ordinary law crime.

The approach of the Economic Change, Poverty, and the Environment Project will be to: The project is working with local project partners in the following five countries: China
A team from WWF China, working in the area over recent years, will address poverty and environmental issues in Deqin County, Northern Yunnan Province. Deqin County is a poor and remote mountainous area of the southwest China temperate forest ecosystem, one of richest and rarest ecoregions. In 1983, after decades of state-sponsored logging, the government embraced conservation, and created a Nature Reserve in a quarter of the county, later extending the area to one third. The population, mostly Tibetan subsistence farmers, now face insecure and limited access to land and forest resources that they had traditionally depended on. Other local livelihood options are similarly limited.

April 14, 2000 Prof. J. Desmond Clark, emeritus professor of paleoarchaeology at the University of California, Berkeley, and one of the preeminent paleoarchaeologist and Africanists in the world, has just shown me a copy of a March 29, 2000 article from the Daily Telegraph (London) entitled: "Last Record of African Explorers Faces Ruin." The article was written by Ishbel Matheson in Livingstone, Zambia. It reads in part: "A priceless collection of books and documents, detailing the earliest days of European exploration in Africa, is under threat of destruction. The Livingstone Museum in southern Zambia has hundreds of valuable books, written by the first missionaries, adventurers and prospectors in central Africa. But the building's leaking ceiling collapsed in recent heavy rains, and many publications were damaged beyond repair. Others need expensive conservation work to save them. Piles of ancient, sodden volumes, with subjects as diverse as elephant-hunting and native practices, have been left to dry in the tropical heat. Early newspapers, with vivid descriptions of life in what was then British-ruled Northern Rhodesia, can scarcely be opened, for fear of tearing fragile, brittle pages.
