E NVIRONMENT / G EOGRAPHY THE LAND CLIMATE RAINFALL ENERGY ... CONSERVATION The Land Zambia takes its name from the Zambezi River, which rises in the north-west corner of the country and forms its southern boundary. The landlocked country lies between latitudes 10 o and 18 o South and longitudes 22 o and 33 o East. The level of the land falls southward from the Congo DR / Zambezi divide in the north towards the Zambezi depression in the South. The plateau is broken by the huge valleys of the Upper Zambezi and its major tributaries, of which the Kafue and Luangwa rivers are the largest. One result of the plateau formation of Africa generally is the swift discharge of water towards the coast and the interruption of the rivers by waterfalls and rapids. This has made them of little value for transport over their length, but very suitable for hydroelectric schemes and white water rafting adventures. With the exception of the Northern and Luapula provinces which are part of the Congo DR basin, Zambia lies on the watershed between the Congo DR and Zambezi River systems. The three great natural lakes of the country, Bangweulu, Mweru and the southern end of Lake Tanganyika are all in the north and are part of the headwaters of the Zaire River. Lake Tanganyika is the second deepest natural lake in the world.

It is the watershed area between the Congo and the Zambezi, and mainly drains into the Zambezi system westward into Angola. Altitude c.1,200 - 1,490m. Click map below for enlargement. Geology The Kalahari Sand which covers much of the western part of Africa south of the Equator has been eroded in the Mwinilunga district on the slopes. The underlying rock, once exposed, mixes finer material with the sand. Some areas are waterlogged over an impervious substrate. These areas support a suffrutex savanna vegetation and provide areas of great natural beauty in the reserve. http://www.wcs.org/sw-education/internationaleducation/466313
Section Topics Papua New Guinea Environmental Education Program Cuba Environmental Education Program China Environmental Education Program Zambia Fact Sheet ... India Environmental Education Program Zambia Fact Sheet Workshop group at Munda Wanga Zambia is one of the few nations in sub-Saharan Africa where wildlife still survives in relative abundance. The nation’s small population and geography have managed to insulate, to some extent, Zambia’s major protected areas from human impact. Zambia’s population centers, Lusaka in partiuclar, are significant distances from the habitats where large populations of leopard, elephant, and a diversity of antelope and birds still survive. But Zambia’s geography also poses an obstacle for conservation, as few Zambians have any knowledge or appreciation for the country’s spectacular wildlife and the other components that comprise the nation’s natural heritage. In 2003, WCS’s Education Division began working with Zambia’s only zoo, the Munda Wanga Environmental Park, located on the outskirts of Lusaka- the nation’s capital. To date, WCS has provided zoo-based lesson plans and training to Munda Wanga’s small and inexperienced education staff. WCS trainers also worked with Munda Wanga to host a five-day environmental education program at the park for teachers and reserve and community educators from throughout Zambia. With WCS’s Habitat Ecology Learning Program as its main text, the workshop provided valuable content to participants while also providing Munda Wanga educators with their first opportunity to host a multi-day workshop and to create a local constituency of educators who see it as an important educational resource.
