By Christian Fraser
BBC, Lusaka
Former Zambian president Frederick Chiluba is on trial accused of the theft of millions of dollars while in office.
This is the first of two trials in which the former president is accused of diverting state funds into privately held accounts. Mr Chiluba has fought hard to avoid a trial He was a bus conductor, who went all the way to the presidential office, but his fall from grace could be almost as spectacular. Mr Chiluba is charged with the theft of tens of millions of dollars during his 10 years in office. The prosecution alleges this is merely the tip of the iceberg - investigators believe millions more were laundered and re-directed into private accounts and property they have not yet found. Over the last year, thousands of hours have been spent uncovering what the prosecution has described as a highly organised network, through which the former administration is said to have bled the national treasury. It has been dubbed the "matrix of plunder". The prosecution says the trail goes to Belgium, the UK, the US, South Africa and the Caribbean.

Country Profile THE PEOPLE Zambia has one of the lowest populations to land ratio's in Africa. Only about 10 million people in a country half the size of Europe. The employment opportunities in mining and associated industries have caused Zambia to be one of the most urbanized countries in Africa. About one-fifth of the population lives on the Copperbelt and an estimated 2 million plus people live in Lusaka - the capital. This has resulted in massive tracts of uninhabited land across the country. CULTURE Zambia's contemporary culture is a blend of values, norms, material and spiritual traditions of more than 70 ethnically diverse people. During the colonial period, the process of industrialization and urbanization saw ethnically different people brought together by economic interests, This, as well as the very definite influence of western standards, generated a new culture without conscious effort of politically determined guidelines. Many of the rural inhabitants however, have retained their indigenous and traditional customs and values. After Independence in 1964, the government recognized the role culture was to play in the overall development of a new nation and began to explore the question of a National Identity. As a result, Private and Public museums and cultural villages were established to promote the expression of artistic talents. MUSIC AND DANCE Dance is an important part of musical expression among Zambians and along with the ideas they express, have served as reflectors of life and thought over the centuries. Many traditional instruments are still played throughout the country, although the desire for western instruments continues to increase. The most common traditional instrument of course is the drum and drumming plays an important part of rituals, ceremonies, celebrations and community communication.

Border countries include Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. Zambia sits on a high plateau, sloping sharply in the north down to Lake Tanganyika which Zambia shares with Tanzania, Burundi and Congo (Zaire). There are three major rivers; the Zambezi which forms the border with Namibia and Zimbabwe, the Kafue which flows into the Zambezi south of Lusaka (the Capital) and the Luangwa which also flows into the Zambezi. Zambia's most impressive geographical aspect is Victoria Falls which is shared with Zimbabwe. On the Zambezi river at Livingstone, the falls are 2kms wide, 100m deep and 546 million cubic meters of water flow over them every minute.

Part 1: Defining Culture Introduction Grades 3-5 ... The Iceberg Cuisine and Etiquette Where I Come From Becoming Part of the Community Cuisine and Etiquette in Sierra Leone, Uganda, and Zambia Class time needed: 40 minutes Materials Objective: Students will make inferences about cultural norms from customs related to eating in three African countries. Introduction
Food is one of the most enjoyable ways to experience another culture. The focus of this activity about mealtime etiquette is on how manners reflect cultural norms. The descriptions were written by teachers from Sierra Leone, Uganda, and Zambia. Note: This lesson could be used to supplement content on African agriculture or climate. Procedure
  • Explain the concept of "staple food," usually a carbohydrate that is eaten daily and is a major source of calories. Ask the students to identify the staple foods of other cultures they have studied (potatoes for Ireland, rice for Japan, maize for Mexico, etc.). What is our staple food? Some students may say hamburgers, but wheat, corn, or potatoes are more accurate answers. Explain that in their readings in this lesson they will learn that rice is the staple food for most of West Africa, maize (corn) for much of Eastern and Southern Africa, and matoke (ma-tok-a), or cooking bananas, for Uganda.

    ZAMBIA
Zambia, the 'real' Africa, is famed for its huge protected wilderness areas - the South Luwangwa National Park is home to arguably the most diverse range of game in Africa. Birds are found in profusion.
Zambia has many lakes with beaches, ideal for those who wish to swim, sunbathe and enjoy water sports in uncrowded surroundings. It is criss-crossed by numerous rivers, perfect for canoeing, rafting or fishing in unspoilt wilderness. See the awe-insiring majesty of the Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, the "Smoke that Thunders". The mighty Zambezi River runs through the country, its name alone evoking images of the spirit of Africa. Chiawa Camp
Attracted to Africa's natural allure over a century ago, the Cunnings family continued their commitment to wildlife conservation. In 1989 they founded Chiawa Camp and pioneered tourism into the Lower Zambezi National Park. The unique wilderness is situated on the banks of the Zambezi River. In some places 2kms wide , the Zambezi is 2,700 kms long and meanders through the Park, attracting much wildlife to its islands. Home to lion, leopard, herds of elephant and buffalo, hippo and over 300 bird species, the National Park with its gigantic baobab and acacia trees provides the perfect setting for an African safari. This private tented camp is designed in a tasteful manner that allows guests to fully appreciate its magnificent setting. A wide variety of activities, spectacular scenery and exceptional game viewing are complemented by a modern infrastructure and attentive, professional staff. The combination makes Chiawa Camp one of Zambia's most desirable safari destinations. Resting peacefully in a grove of Mahogany and Acacia trees, Chiawa Camp accommodates up to 16 guests in 8 well appointed safari
