By Penny Dale
BBC, Lusaka
A group of Zambian churches has demanded that the reality television show Big Brother Africa be taken off the air. The groups' every move is broadcast across the continent "Immoral, indecent and dishonest - that is how you will end up," the churches are warning, if you watch the South Africa-based show making headlines from Cape to Cairo. The show brings together in a single house 12 contestants - each from a different African country. Just about every move the housemates make - their time in bed, in the kitchen, in the garden and in the shower - is caught on camera and beamed into people's homes every night. The contestants compete against each other to see who stays in the house the longest and at the end of 106 days, the winner gets a prize of US$100,000. 'Moral alert' There is nothing the clergy can do about the fact that the show is beamed into people's homes by satellite but Zambia is one of 10 countries where Big Brother is also shown on the national broadcaster.

An African safari takes place in Africa. Africa is a diverse continent rich in cultures, scenery and wildlife. Most tourists travel to Africa to participate in an African safari. Safaris are usually conducted in a vehicle but the more adventurous travelers have participated in African safaris on foot, canoe, boat, horseback, and even elephant back. Useful information

Zambia lies on the Central African Plateau and at the southern end of the Great Rift Valley. A number of early stone age sites have been uncovered throughout the country, the main sites are located at Kalambo Falls in the north and Victoria Falls in the south. Evidence of the use of fire up to 60,000 years ago has been found at Kalambo Falls. By the late stone age, around 15,000 years ago, people were using cave shelters and creating rock paintings of which unfortunately only a few have survived due to Zambia's humid climate. These early people were probably of San descent, as in other areas of Southern Africa.
They brought with them domestic animals, pottery and tool making skills and began to concentrate on agriculture and a more settled way of life. With the discovery of copper around AD350, mining began and currency and jewellery was made. Trade with Swahili tribes began around AD1500 - 1800 and at this time many of the tribes in the Zambian area were organised into chieftaincies or monarchies.

The effects of globalization on culture in Africa
in the eyes of an African woman

by Fridah Muyale-Manenji "Shonyala okhumanya inzu yowasio tawe". This literally means that you cannot manage or know the affairs of the house of your neighbour. This is a saying the people of Ebukanga village, Kisa location in Kakamega district of the Western Province of Kenya usually use when respecting one's privacy and affairs. At times this saying is also used when people assume they know what is going on in somebody's home. Here in Zimbabwe, the country in which "I came to cook" (in my culture, when a woman is married, she has gone to cook), they say "Chakafukidza dzimba atenga" (What covers the house is the roof). This saying is almost similar to the first one in the sense that it implies that it is only the people who live in the house who know what is happening in their lives, no matter what assumptions or concepts people outside the house have of them. For some reason, when

BEHIND THE MASK A website on gay and lesbian affairs in Africa Zambia NEWS Zambia's Registrar of Societies continues to refuse to register the gay organization Legatra (Lesbian, Gay and Transgender Association), according to the Gay and Lesbian Times. Due to this, and other problems, Legatra has been unable to raise money to create a public awareness campaign and challenge the ban on gay-male sex. 'At the moment we are at an impasse', says spokesperson Regina Numwa. Gay men are routinely arrested. The cases are usually dropped for lack of evidence or settled out of court. Legatra's president has been gay-bashed twice. In one incident, one of his eyes was permanently damaged. 'Zambians are generally not very militant people; and, faced with multiple hostilities, the LGBT community closes ranks', Numwa said. 'Legatra finds it very difficult to organize the LGBT community, as they live in perpetual fear of their lives.'

Old Fashioned Africa
The private tented camps are very few and far between but all are small and offer an extremely personal atmosphere while maintaining excellent standards. The vast majority of visitors spend time along the Lower Luangwe and Zambezi River Valleys. With open-vehicles, bush walking with armed guards and night game-drives you are virtually guaranteed fabulous gameviewing, most of it close-up and exciting. Walking is strongly recommended and the guides are professional and courteous. One truly feels "this is the old fashioned Africa" they have dreamt about.

Edwin William Smith who became famous as a missionary/anthropologist with linguistic talents, was born at Aliwal North, South Africa, on September 7, 1876.[1] His parents were missionaries of the Primitive Methodist Connexion, a movement that began in the early nineteenth century and became one of the main branches of British Methodism. Edwin Smith's father, John Smith (1840-1915), went to Aliwal North in 1874 and spent ten of the next fourteen years there. Returning to London, he became secretary of the Primitive Methodist Missionary Society in the 1890s and president of the Primitive Methodist Conference in 1898.
As a young person Edwin Smith showed few signs of academic prowess and found an office job in London. In his spare time he roamed through his father's large library and read the works of John Colenso and other progressive writers. This reading undermined his faith, but a local minister led him to view Christianity pragmatically, "as a life to be lived."[2] He also read books about the exploration of Africa, and as his longing to return to Africa increased, he realized in 1895 that there was an opportunity for service as a Bible translator in a new mission among the Ila of central Africa. He learned Greek at Birkbeck College and spent a year acquiring basic medical skills at Livingstone College, in London's East End. Then in 1898 he returned to Africa and spent a few months in Lesotho with the Paris Evangelical Mission. The enthusiasm and expertise of Rev. E. Jacottet of Thaba Bosiu inspired him to make his own studies of Bantu languages and cultures.

(Department of Historical Studies, University of Natal, Durban) will pursue two related projects on documentary photography while at Emory. The first, Photographing Poverty in Pre-Apartheid South Africa (1916-1948) , examines visual images of people framed as problematically poor within a broader context of picturing working-class persons. She places these images within South Africa's changing visual economy and considers the development of local traditions of social documentary photography in relation to poverty. Throughout, she examines the dynamics of racialized social documentary portraiture. Du Toit is also working on the Durban South Photography Project , a collaborative venture with photographer Jenny Gordon that aims to portray life in Durban's southern industrial basin. The project combines contemporary social documentary photography with research into personal and familial photography. A central aspect of the project is an annual workshop and exhibition - residents take photographs, make albums and choose family photographs to exhibit. Du Toit will reflect on this dynamic of local exhibitions and plan towards further exhibitions that are to include Gordon's photographs. Her other primary research interest is feminist history of Afrikaner nationalism and her work in this area has been published in several journals and books.

Livingstone has the air of a colonial outback frontier town. The main attraction in town is the Livingstone Museum that has many relics and items owned by the famous explorer of the same name. Here visitors can try to decipher the handwritten letters penned by Livingstone to his family in Scotland. Cultural enthusiasts will be keen to visit Chief Mukuni's village. In this earthy environment, guests are given an introduction to the lifestyle and customs of the local tribe where dancing, arts and crafts are all available. Walking trails through the Zoological Park gives visitors a chance to exercise and to spot the many species of game. This rain forest is best known for its giraffe population, but here one can see baboon, warthog, zebra, sable, wildebeest and a variety of antelope. The Zambezi Waterfront is designed to attract the more adventurous traveller who wishes to experience the great Zambezi River, the Victoria Falls and its wildlife surrounds.
