Main groups and languages include Bemba in the north and centre, Tonga in the south, Nyanja in the east, and Lozi in the west. English is now the national language and is widely spoken, even in remote areas. About two-thirds of the population is Christian, though many combine that with traditional animist beliefs. A lot of traditional Zambian music is heavily rhythmic, usually played on drums, whistles and thumb pianos, and nearly always to accompany dancing. One of the most popular styles, however, is an import from the Democratic Republic of the Congo - the rumba. The staple dish in Zambia is a stiff porridge called nshima commonly made from maize or sometimes sorghum. It's typically served in a communal dish, and eaten with the right hand, rolling the nshima into a ball and dipping it into a sauce of meat or vegetables. In areas along rivers and lakes shores, fish are also eaten. Popular freshwater types include bream, lake salmon and Nile perch. Home Zambia Africa E-mail us ...

Teachers, Tealth workers, Counsellors, Finance managers, Accountants, Bookeeper, Nurses, Doctors, etc. VMM In Zambia:
VMM has had a presence in Zambia since 1970 when volunteers were first sent there. The living standards for the majority of the population was better in 1970 than it is today. It is one of the most peaceful of African nations, is four times the size of the UK, and is rich in culture. Being landlocked makes it expensive to transport goods to and from Zambia and the value of the currency (kwacha) is very weak. It has a tropical climate with rains only in the season from October to April and being at high altitude makes Zambia cooler than many of its neighbouring countries.
Government: The present constitution dates from 1973. Legislative power is held by the unicameral National Assembly with 135 members, 125 of whom are elected every five years by universal adult suffrage (the remaining ten are presidential appointees). Executive power is held by the president who appoints a cabinet, headed by a prime minister, to conduct the administration of the government.

    My Pictures
    My Thoughts
As you probably know, the adult population of Africa has been decimated by AIDS, leaving a large population of orphans (many of whom also have AIDS). As we learned from our host, Bishop Greg Chetan of the Fire-Baptized Church in Zambia
Construction began on the first Children's Village in the fall of 2001. Because of generous financial support of the project by Bristol Christan Fellowship and excellent project management by the primary contractor, Alex Mwasa, the project progressed rapidly, particularly by African standards. After a few short months, the first building was complete and the second was taking shape. We arrived about 6 months after the project began to the scene shown on in my photojournal. With or team of 19 people from the US and UK, we nearly doubled the number of workers on the project. In the two weeks we were there, the combined Team Zambia put almost all of the finishing touches on the second building, including outside plaster work, door and window frames, draft ceiling, cement floors, tile work, plumbing, and electrical.
As can be expected from any trip to another culture, we learned a lot. This was a particularly fruitful trip in that regard, since we were nearly equal in number to the Zambia construction workers and worked side-by-side with them for nearly two weeks! The official language in Zambia is English, which also helped (though, like most of Africa, tribal languages are spoken in preference to the official national language). Probably the most valuable lesson learned is that people across the world are not so different as you might think. When you visit another culture (this makes my 7th distinct world culture), look for commonality. And, if you do talk about "my" culture and "your" culture, make sure you spent at least 90% of your time talking about the similarities, otherwise you risk building walls rather than bridges.

    Water and Culture
by Megan Mann , Mapulanga, Zambia Zambians often drink "Katubi" (pronounced Ka-z-be) during ceremonies. The villagers make it with water and millet. Every August, the chief has a celebration, and the people will begin making Katubi weeks beforehand in order to have enough for the party. Water is also used in making art. One villager soaks his basket strips so they are moist to be shaped and don't snap. Another woman uses water to make pottery. Both of these villagers are very talented, and don't realize just how gifted they are.
