There are about 35 different ethnic groups or tribes in Zambia, all with their own languages. Main groups and languages include Bemba in the north and centre, Tonga in the south, Nyanja in the east, and Lozi in the west. English is now the national language and is widely spoken, even in remote areas. About two-thirds of the population is Christian, though many combine that with traditional animist beliefs. A lot of traditional Zambian music is heavily rhythmic, usually played on drums, whistles and thumb pianos, and nearly always to accompany dancing. One of the most popular styles, however, is an import from the Congo (Za¯re) - the rumba. The staple dish in Zambia is a stiff porridge called nshima, commonly made from maize or sometimes sorghum. It's typically served in a communal dish and eaten with the right hand, rolling the nshima into a ball and dipping it into a sauce of meat or vegetables. In areas along rivers and lake shores, fish are also eaten. Popular freshwater types include bream, lake salmon and Nile perch.

    The population
Recent statistics suggest that Zambia's population stands at about ten million, and this is increasing by around 3% per year. About 49% of Zambia's population are under 15 years of age, whilst some 73% of those above age 15 are literate. About 10% of Zambians live in Lusaka. Statistics indicate that the average life expectancy for a Zambian is 42 years. Around 99% of the population are black African in origin, and the remaining 1% are mostly people of European or Indian origin. However, the statistics say nothing of the warmth that the sensitive visitor can encounter. If you venture into the rural areas, take a local bus, or try to hitchhike with the locals, you will often find that Zambians are curious about you. Chat to them openly, as fellow travellers, and you will find most Zambians to be delightful. They will be pleased to assist you where they can, and as keen to help you learn about them and their country as they are interested in your lifestyle and what brings you to Zambia... Chapter Three
Cultural guidelines Comments here are intended to be a general guide, just a few examples of how to travel more sensitively. They should not be viewed as blueprints for perfect Zambian etiquette.Cultural sensitivity is really a state of mind, not a checklist of behaviour - so here we can only hope to give the sensitive traveller a few pointers in the right direction. When we travel, we are all in danger of leaving negative impressions with local people that we meet. It is easily done - by snapping that picture quickly, whilst the subject is not looking; by dressing scantily, offending local sensitivities; by just brushing aside the feelings of local people, with the high-handed superiority of a rich Westerner. These things are easy to do, in the click of a shutter, or flash of a dollar bill. However, you will get the most representative view of Zambia if you cause as little disturbance to the local people as possible. You will never blend in perfectly when you travel - your mere presence there, as an observer, will always change the local events slightly. However, if you try to fit in and show respect for local culture and attitudes, then you may manage to leave positive feelings behind you. One of the easiest, and most important, ways to do this is with greetings. African societies are rarely as rushed as Western ones. When you first talk to someone, you should greet them leisurely. So, for example, if you enter a bus station and want some help, do not just ask outright, 'Where is the bus to ...' That would be rude. Instead you will have a better reception (and better chance of good advice) by saying:

Country Info Zambia Introduction Zambia General Data Zambia Maps Zambia Culture ... Zambia Time and Date Zambia Culture Back to Top Since the 1950s the cultural scene has been transformed by large-scale urbanization and exposure to exotic influences from Europe, the Americas, and other parts of Africa. Radio and television (one channel only and restricted to the Line of Rail, Chipata, Mongu, and Kasama) have sped this process. Various forms of theatre have flourished. In the last years of colonial rule, dance drama was developed for nationalist ends; the Chikwakwa Theatre, based at the University of Zambia, pioneered politically radical popular drama in the early years of independence. In the 1980s, aid agencies and other bodies promoted “theatre for development,” often unscripted and in vernacular languages, and government departments have used drama to communicate agricultural and health messages. The Zambia Publishing House (formerly the Kenneth Kaunda Foundation) is a government-backed publisher of the works of Zambian authors and school textbooks. The few other publishers are mainly church-supported. Zambian scholars have contributed to knowledge in a wide range of disciplines, often in locally published academic journals, though opportunities for research have been restricted in recent years by general economic difficulties.

    Zambia History
Zambia first gained European attention in the 1890s when British business magnate Cecil Rhodes sent expeditions into the area to look for more minerals and cheap labor for his South African mines. Rhodes found what he was looking for and claimed the area, which eventually became known as Northern Rhodesia. A British protectorate from 1924 until 1953, Northern Rhodesia joined what are now Zimbabwe and Malawi in the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The federation was peacefully dissolved in 1964 and newly named Zambia became an independent, multiracial republic.
Kenneth Kaunda, one of the heroes of the independence movement, was named president of the new country, a position he held for the next 27 years. Kaunda imprinted the nation with his vision of "humanism," a mixture of socialism and Christianity. For a while, it worked. Some of the world's largest deposits of copper lie beneath Zambian soil, and when copper prices were high, the nation used exports to establish a relatively high standard of living. Unfortunately, when the price of the metal tumbled in the 1970s so did living standards.
By 1990, conditions were bad enough to generate civil unrest, leading to a decision to schedule multiparty elections. In 1991, President Kaunda was replaced by Frederick Chiluba, in what is regarded as one of the smoothest and fairest national elections Africa has ever witnessed.

Lusaka - Culture Lusaka is a city whose bustling chaos has a certain charm that is just Zambia. The fascinating thing about Lusaka is its energy. Not perhaps of the same ilk as the Big Apple, but an African energy, propelled by that need to survive. Lusaka is as much a part of "the real Africa" as the rich national parks and stunning scenery. Well over 60% of its 2 million inhabitants are unemployed, but there are surprisingly few beggars. Although petty theft occurs, most people try to make an honest living, selling their wares or services and smiling to boot. The markets are a hive of activity, the thousands of stalls are filled and cleared every day. A myriad of motor spares dealers, restaurants, hairdressers, fishmongers, greengrocers and rows and rows of "salaula" - discarded clothing from the West sold to Africa by the bale. Venture out to a nightclub or roadside shebeen and "get in the groove", so to speak, of the local people. Dance the night away to the sounds of rhumba, kwela, techno or good old rock 'n roll. But Lusaka is also a city undergoing a facelift. A walk around the city will reveal new shops-including a new market and a multi-million dollar shopping mall under construction; smart fast food outlets; freshly mended roads old buildings being refurbished and the transformation of the city's parks.

An exploration of many of the countries of Southern Africa will lift your heart with their models of progressive social policy, peace and cooperation. Two thousand years ago southern Africa was inhabited by the hunter-gather 'San' people who left an extraordinary record of their life painted on the walls of caves. Around the eleventh century Bantu-speaking people migrated into the area and began developing the civilization that built the 'Great Zimbabwe', that still stands strong. Today, the region is noteworthy for its democracies, 'agricultural miracles', environmental awareness, material and musical culture. Their primary education, women's development and rural health care delivery are recognized as well. It is a region of pride and optimism. Visitors exclaim about the thousands of miles of paved roads, many moods of the Zambezi River, breathtaking Victoria Falls, enchanting 'kopjes', flourishing wildlife, intriguing traditional rock art, powerful Great Zimbabwe Ruins, extraordinary modern stone sculpture and excellent museums. But for those who also stopped away from the tourist areas, as great as the sites are, their greatest memories are of the people they met and the friends they made. The primary season for these programs is June-September. Itineraries may vary between
