In Alaskan and Yukon history, the best known period of mining history is the great Klondike Gold Rush which took place in 1898. By the time the thousands of prospectors landed at Dawson City in the Yukon Territory they found all the valuable ground staked. Consequently, many of them either returned to their homes empty-handed or fanned out into the surrounding country hoping to find new areas where they could make their fortunes. Many continued down the Yukon River to the already established Fortymile mining district and some further on to the Eagle district. Approximately 150 miles further down the river lay the town of Circle, the heart of the Circle district. Although the strikes in the Klondike are the best known, previous discoveries were made and production began in tributaries along the upper Yukon in the mid-1880s with discoveries along the Fortymile River. Following these, in 1893, two Creoles, named Pitka and Sorresca made additional discoveries in what later became the Circle Mining District. Their initial discoveries were somewhere on Birch Creek. News of the discovery started an influx of prospectors into the area and in the following spring (1894) discovery of the placers on Mastodon Creek. As prospectors continued to probe the drainages surrounding Birch and Mastodon Creeks, gold was also discovered on Independence, Miller, Deadwood, and Boulder Creeks all within what eventually became the Circle mining district.

Yukon [y OO Pronunciation Key Yukon , river, c.2,000 mi (3,220 km) long, rising in Atlin Lake, NW British Columbia, Canada, and receiving numerous headwater streams; one of the longest rivers of North America. It flows generally northwest, past Dawson and across the Alaska border, to Fort Yukon, thence generally southwest through central Alaska until, in a wide swing north, it enters Norton Sound of the Bering Sea through a delta that is 60 mi (97 km) wide. Its chief tributaries are the Teslin, Pelly, White, Stewart, Porcupine, Tanana, and Koyukuk rivers. The river is incised in the Yukon Plateau; marshy land borders much of its upper course. The Yukon is navigable for river boats three months of the year to Whitehorse, c.1,775 mi (2,860 km) upstream. The Yukon River is a major salmon-spawning ground, and salmon fishing is an important seasonal activity. The Yukon is used to generate hydroelectricity, but it remains one of the greatest undeveloped hydroelectric resources in North America. On the river's banks are fur-trading posts, missions, native villages, and towns with modern airports serving vast areas.

The funds were used to publish a report and also to help maintain our Yukon wide toll-free UFO reporting telephone line. Without this vital communications link, this report would not have been possible as written. Time spent in documenting UFO cases and producing this report was donated by UFO Yukon members.
This report contains the following and will be available in June 2002:

F ew published scholarly resources exist to facilitate development of a history of the book in Yukon. Fundamental work has gathered together basic resources but print culture in Yukon is largely unmapped territory. This paper will suggest avenues by which to approach the mass of archival material available, and attempt to raise historiographical concerns pertinent to authorship, printing, publishing, and reading in Yukon.
Introduction
Yukon, a territory located in the northwestern-most corner of Canada, boasts an area of 483,450 square kilometres and a population of 3,610 Native people and approximately 24,045 non-Native residents. Two events have indelibly marked Yukon history into three periods: the discovery of gold on Rabbit Creek near present-day Dawson in August 1896 and the construction of the Alaska Highway in 1942. Explorers, traders, and missionaries were relatively few in comparison to the indigenous population prior to 1896. The discovery of gold precipitated an unprecedented migration of people to the territory, particularly the Klondike area near Dawson that gave its name to the rush. The migration firmly established print culture in the territory.

History of the Yukon Quest Yukon Quest Information Summary The Yukon Quest began as a shared dream of musher LeRoy Shank and non-musher and historian Roger Williams. They dedicated their vision to the gold seekers, mail carriers, trappers and the traders who settled the great North during the turn of the century. This international sled dog race began in 1984 with 27 teams, covering 1,000 miles / 1,600 km of rough and sometime hazardous terrain between Whitehorse, Yukon and Fairbanks, Alaska. This event takes place each year in mid February at a time when the weather can be unpredictably cold. The starting point alternates between the two cities; even years from Fairbanks and odd years from Whitehorse. The race starts on schedule regardless of weather and will take from 11 to 14 days to complete, depending on weather conditions encountered on the trail. Only the race Marshall or Judges can change the starting place and time. The race becomes more popular internationally each year. The Yukon Quest will begin in Whitehorse, Yukon on February 8, 1998. The Quest allows no more than 50 entrants and the $100,000 (U.S. ) is divided among the first 20 finishing teams. The race winner will take home $25,000. Drivers ( mushers ) must be at least 18 years of age and start the race with no less than 8 dogs and no more than 14. Drivers must finish the race with no less than 8 dogs. Dogs may not be added to the team after the start of the race.

Yukon First Nations elders and people have many stories and legends about the creation of earth and the first human inhabitants. These stories have been passed down from generation to generation, and are an important part of the Yukon First Nations culture. Along with these stories, archaeologists theorize that the first people crossed a land bridge from Asia to northern Canada during the Pleistocene Ice Age between 10,000 to 25,000 years ago. This link between continents was estimated to be 2,400 kilometres wide. The growth of glaciers lowered sea levels and exposed portions of continental shelves which created this broad land bridge. Parts of northern Alaska and Yukon remained ice-free during the last ice age and provided a haven for many animals and humans fleeing from colder regions. Archaeologists suggest early inhabitants of the Yukon hunted woolly mammoths, bison, horses and caribou. They lived in small family groups which travelled with the animals. The earliest evidence of human activity was found in caves on the Bluefish River near Old Crow in northern Yukon. Stone tools and animal bones found at this site were estimated to be 20,000 years old.

The History of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory
Archaeological work at Canyon City shows evidence that First Nations people have used this area for many thousands of years. There were seasonal fish camps above and below Miles Canyon and the Whitehorse Rapids, and First Nations trails extended along the banks of the river. Early explorers had little contact with the indigenous population, although Frederick Schwatka, in 1883, made note of a First Nations portage trail bypassing Miles Canyon, and George Mercer Dawson, in 1887, noted the large number of salmon above the canyon - salmon were one of the fish that were important to the aboriginal population. In the early 20th century traditional patterns began to change, and many First Nations people moved to Whitehorse. Some had seasonal jobs there with White Pass, or worked in the area as big-game guides or trappers. On August 16, 1896, Skookum Jim, Tagish Charlie and George Washington Carmack found gold in the Klondike, and the Yukon was changed forever. It was nearly a year, however, before the outside world knew about the find; the steamship Excelsior arrived from the north in San Francisco on July 15, 1897, and the
