Hello everyone! By now you are back in the ‘thick’ of things working with your students in the classroom. Hopefully, the entry into the 2002/03 school year has been a smooth one. Geographically speaking, things are alive and well in this region. The CCGE was fortunate to be represented by a member from our area at the National Geographic Geography Action! seminar held in Washington, DC last spring. Chris Torrance, who teaches in SD #75, Mission, represented geography teachers from across Canada. As a result of his participation, Chris will be creating exciting learning opportunities for your students incorporating the theme, Public Lands 2002. These classroom activities can be found at www.ccge.org

Field Research in Northern Canada
(GEG 4001)
The theme of the field course is geomorphological processes and recent environmental change in the Kluane Region. This is a 6cr course which IN 2002 can be assembled from a number of components. There will be three components concentrating on lacustrine environments, fluvial processes on alluvial fans, and snow and ice stratigraphy and glacier mass balance. Each component will be a 3cr module and students may assemble their 6cr package.
Lacustrine Environments
The marl lakes of the Kluane region are dominated by carbonate sedimentation produced in the water column as a result of CO2 exchange between the atmosphere and carbonate rich water. The high carbonate content in the lake water is due to groundwater input from glacial deposits with a high dolomite content. Objective is to investigate environmental change over the last 1200 years from an analysis of the sediments and macro-fossils in closed basin marl lakes. The 1200 year level is defined by the White River Volcanic Ash stratigraphic marker. Sediment core stratigraphy; carbonate content and crystal form, organic content; and loess content will be measured; and macro and micro fossils will be examined.

SEASON 1 The Yukon Quest Dawson City, Yukon — On this episode of CG Kids, Jennifer and Jamie make mush ado about the Yukon in Dawson City! After checking out the snowy streets, haunted hotels and kissing buildings in town, our CG-ers meet up with 13-year-old Gemma Gould, a fourth generation gold miner! Gemma’s grandfather gives Jamie and Jennifer a lesson in rocker boxes and panning (that’s gold-finding for the rest of us!) at the Dawson City Museum. Then it’s time for a little snowmobiling trip to check out the largest wooden gold dredge in Canada! Later, Jennifer and Jamie get playful with some puppies in Dogtown, a Dawson pit stop on the world-famous dog-sledding race known as the Yukon Quest. No time for sledding, though! Not when there’s an ancient Han peoples’ fishing village and smokehouses for our extreme explorers to discover! It all adds up to a CG Kids episode filled with some serious gold diggin’, dog riggin’, and prospector jiggin’ you just won’t want to miss! Back to CG Kids Index

It is composed of ten provinces and three territories. It is bounded on the western edge by the Pacific Ocean, on the northern edge by the Arctic Ocean, on the eastern edge by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the southern edge by the United States of America (USA) . The edge running between countries is called a "border". In Canada, the country of the United States of America (U.S.A.) is either called "the States" (as in "We're going to the States for the weekend") or "the U.S." (as in "There's no public health care in the U.S."). If you want to enrage a Canadian then go ahead and refer to the States as "America". After all, Canada is in North America and so is Mexico A popular symbol of Canada is the mountie. A mountie is a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (R.C.M.P.). Their fancy dress uniform is brilliant red as illustrated in the photo taken on Parliament Hill, Ottawa on Canada Day. Canada Day is July 1st and is Canada's birthday. It used to be called Dominion Day.
