Yukon Geography Quiz
Okay, people, if you're going to look for that lost moose, you'll need to brush up on your Yukon geography. Here's a quiz to test your knowledge. Thanks to Conrad Boyce and the Yukon Science Institute for this column, Sourdough Scientist, printed originally in the Yukon News, February 1989. We'll start with an easy one.
  • What are the Yukon's high and low points, elevation-wise? Two points
  • Of the Yukon's 16 electoral districts, only four have names of Indian derivation. List them. Four points
  • How many existing communities have the word "crossing" as part of their present OR historical name? Two points
  • Some little memory teasers. Cite a Yukon community with the same name as a: (a) bird (b) beverage (c) casino game (d) fish (e) condiment. Five points
  • Name the industry historically associated with the following communities. If it's mining, what kind? (a) Clinton Creek (b) Klukshu (c) Porter Creek (d) Conrad (e) Fort Selkirk (f) Herschel Island (g) Faro (h) Dominion (i) Forty Mile (j) Guggieville. Ten points
  • This one's easy if you have a map (if you know where to look), but without a map, can you say what body of water (stream, lake, sea, whatever) the following Yukon rivers first flow into? (We know they all flow into the Pacific or Arctic Oceans eventually, smart -aleck.). (a) Peel (b) Firth (c) Nisutlin (d) Alsek (e) Takhini (f) Hyland (g) Donjek (h) MacMillan (i) Bonnet Plume.

    Yukon Colour of the Land
    Klondike Sun
New Book Reveals the Colour of the Land
Reviewed by Michael Gates The Yukon has a long tradition of photo books, dating back to the Gold Rush. Beginning with the works of photographers such as E.A. Hegg, whose chronicling of the Klondike Stampede made him famous, and the Kinsey brothers, who recorded scenes from the Goldfields early in the century, and more recently, publications by Harrington, Morrow, Von Baich and Towriss, the Yukon, its people and events have been captured in a thousand different poses. None has done so more effectively, than this new publication, displaying the works of Yukon photographer, Richard Hartmier. A 20-year Yukon resident, the ebullient Hartmier, was approached by Lost Moose Publishing of Whitehorse to consider a selection of his photography in book form. Hartmier travels the entire Yukon both under contract and for his own pleasure, continually chronicling its every movement, its mood, its seasons and its people. He has an artist's eye for breathtaking vistas, and a natural eye for detail that keeps one returning to certain photos over and over again, only to discover something new each time. This 122 page book is most notable for the quality of the images. It is clearly the best reproduction of Yukon photographic images that I have seen. In the photo of the new growth after a forest fire (page 43), for example, it is possible to pick out individual stems of grass. So sharp are the details and so accurately and vividly rendered are the colours, that I found myself wanting to step into some of the images.

It flows generally northwest, past Dawson and across the Alaska border, to Fort Yukon, thence generally southwest through central Alaska until, in a wide swing north, it enters Norton Sound of the Bering Sea through a delta that is 60 mi (97 km) wide. Its chief tributaries are the Teslin, Pelly, White, Stewart, Porcupine, Tanana, and Koyukuk rivers. The river is incised in the Yukon Plateau; marshy land borders much of its upper course. The Yukon is navigable for river boats three months of the year to Whitehorse, c.1,775 mi (2,860 km) upstream. The Yukon River is a major salmon-spawning ground, and salmon fishing is an important seasonal activity. The Yukon is used to generate hydroelectricity, but it remains one of the greatest undeveloped hydroelectric resources in North America. On the river's banks are fur-trading posts, missions, native villages, and towns with modern airports serving vast areas.

      Geography and Climate
The triangle-shaped Yukon territory is bordered on the N by the Beaufort Sea of the Arctic Ocean, on the E by the Northwest Territories, on the S by British Columbia and Alaska, and on the W by Alaska. The highest point in the Yukon is Mt. Logan, 19,551 ft (5,959 m) high, part of the Coast Ranges in the southwest. Although most of the territory is a watershed for the Yukon River and its tributaries, the northern and southeastern regions drain east into the Mackenzie River system. Immediately south of the desolate arctic coast the country is uninhabited and generally unknown. The other parts of the territory have great natural beauty, with snow-fed lakes backed by perpetually white-capped mountains and forests and streams abounding with wildlife. Kluane National Park (est. 1972) is in the St. Elias Mts. Winters are long and cold, with low humidity. During the short summers the longer day and surprisingly warm sun bring a profusion of wildflowers and enable the hardier grains and vegetables to mature. The few settlements are situated on the riverbanks. The capital and largest town is

    GEOGRAPHY
The Yukon territory covers 483,450 square kilometres in the far northwestern part of mainland Canada. Its borders lie with British Columbia on the south (latitude 60 N), Northwest Territories on the east, and the U.S. state of Alaska on the west (longitude 141 W). In the north is the Beaufort Sea. Physiography
The Yukon is situated in the Canadian Cordillera, a mountainous belt stretching along the Pacific coast of the North American continent. The cordillera is a series of mountain ranges and valleys along a northwestern alignment. The territory is separated from the Pacific coast by the Alaskan panhandle. Three mountain passes (Chilkat, Chilkoot and White Pass) allow access into the Yukon. The broad Yukon Interior Plateau lies at 600 to 1,000 metres in the central Yukon between the western Coastal Ranges, and the Selwyn and Ogilvie Mountains on the east. A tundra plain stretches along the Arctic coast. The Yukon has 200 kilometres of Arctic coastline along the Beaufort Sea, and one Arctic island located five kilometres off the north shore. Herschel Island is a territorial park.
