EFFECTIVENESS OF YOUTH MENTORING PROGRAMS NOT ALWAYS AS ADVERTISED
MU researchers identify seven ‘best practices’ for successful programs COLUMBIA, Mo. — Youth mentoring programs have become increasingly popular in the United States — so much so that mentoring will be a component of President Bush’s USA Freedom Corps. However, according to a new University of Missouri-Columbia study, the benefits that mentoring programs advertise are not always the benefits that kids receive. “Although these programs show promise, there is a lot of overselling when it comes to youth mentoring,” said David DuBois, associate professor of psychological sciences and lead author of the study. DuBois’ research team analyzed 55 independent studies of volunteer youth mentoring programs. Overall, the researchers found only a small benefit for the average youth. Youth from backgrounds of environmental disadvantage were found to receive the most benefit from being in mentoring programs. However, they also found that poorly implemented programs could have adverse effects on at-risk youth, such as those who have experienced neglect or abuse. “It’s not realistic to think that a mentoring program can support all of a child’s needs, especially if that child is vulnerable to begin with,” said DuBois, who himself is a mentor for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America. “We need to be sure that programs don’t do more harm than good.”

Milwaukee Youth Mentoring Network Milwaukee Youth Mentoring Network (MYMN) is one of Milwaukee's most successful youth mentoring and educational advocacy programs. Program participants are referred to MYMN for emotional, educational, and/or behavioral problems that prevent them from attending and succeeding in school and other areas of their lives. Troubled youths are paired with an adult mentor who provides love, friendship, guidance, fun, and a strong shoulder on which to lean. How You Can Help Send a Child to Camp Milwaukee Youth Mentoring Program encourages children to participate in one of several summer camp opportunities available through the program. Children who attend gain many positive first-time experiences such as camaraderie around the campfire, exposure to different parts of the state and rural environments, a chance to develop leadership and life skills, and an opportunity to meet a diversified mix of fellow campers and build new friendships. While many children are hesitant to experience camp, once they have they want to go back the next year. We collaborate with a number of different camps that offer scholarship programs contributing the majority of the cost. Your contribution of $10 can support a first time camper, while a contribution of $40 supports a returning camper. Contributions in any amount are happily received and support other costs such as transportation.

Faith-Based Mentoring Overview

The Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections Youth Mentoring Program assists high risk youth to be successful as they transition back to their communities. It is a faith-based program that also includes community and secular mentor opportunities so that all youth have access to their individual preference. Partnerships with other established community mentoring programs include Prison Fellowship’s Angel Tree Mentoring, One-on-One Partners, Match Point, and Incarcerated Youth Outreach.
The goals of the ADJC Youth Mentoring Program are to provide high risk youth with a caring adult who can:
  • Participate in the youth’s transition planning.
Help youth prioritize and set goals.
Be a friend and role model.
Support and encourage youth. Assist the youth and their family with practical needs through faith and community contacts. Introduce youth to work experience opportunities through faith and community contacts. Be called upon in a variety of ways that are individual to the needs of the youth.
