Encourage youth of incarcerated adults through mentoring
Deschutes County Oregon April 20, 2004 5:17 PM For a child, the trauma of a mother or father being incarcerated can be overwhelming. Oftentimes, these children experience significantly higher levels of fear, anxiety, sadness, depression, and emotional withdrawal. On Saturday, May 22, the Central Oregon Partnership for Youth Program will offer a free, volunteer youth mentor training class. The class, which takes place from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, focuses on establishing mentoring relationships, communication skills, volunteer responsibilities, family dynamics, and program policies and procedures. Volunteers are required to be 21 years of age or older and a background check will be completed on them. There is no cost to participate, but an application is required to attend.

Youth Mentoring Initiative In his 2003 State of the Union address, the President asked Americans to share their compassion with those at risk of losing hope by becoming mentors. He proposed a three-year, $450 million initiative to recruit and train mentors for more than one million disadvantaged youth, and children with one or more parents in prison, who are making the transition from childhood through adolescence. Through this initiative, key federal agencies will work with nonprofit, community, and faith-based organizations that train volunteer mentors and pair them with children in need. There are two components to the mentoring initiative:
  • $300 million over three years in a program at the U.S. Department of Education to support the development, expansion and strengthening of exemplary mentoring programs for disadvantaged middle school students.

Youth Mentoring - Youth
by Irma Bachelor
Who is your Mentor? Are you a Mentor? There may be someone who is watching your behaviour, listening to your conversations, observing your general deportment and is modelling his/her life on yours; to be good mentors, let us turn to the word of God. 1 Timothy 4:12 "Let no man despise thy youth, but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity." As you seek for a Leader, a Role Model, as you search for someone to give you a sense of direction - God is calling you, are you willing to answer his call? In Matthew 4:19, Jesus called his disciples to become "Fishers of Men". It is the same call he is giving to you, follow Jesus and you can become a Mentor to your peers. Jesus is calling you to Separation : Stay away from the places of sin. Let your friends/peers see you in places you know are good places to be. 1 John 2:15-17 "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any many love the world, the love of the father is not in him for all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, is not of the father, but of the world and the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever." Yours friends will try to influence you. They will pressure you into doing things which your consciences are telling you are wrong. The conscience is that part of you which makes you unhappy when you do wrong. Come out from among them and be separate. Show you are different, pray constantly as your friends/peers will sometimes try to get you angry causing you to sin.

Youth mentoring makes a difference, one student at a time
"No one cares if I show up or not." That's what Superintendent Mike Moses heard when asking students why they dropped out of school. His conversation with these students and the statement above emphasize the importance of the district's Youth Mentoring Program. The Greater Dallas Chamber strongly supports this program that is a partnership between the Dallas Independent School District and Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Texas. The Youth Mentoring Program targets students in the 9 th grade who are at risk of dropping out of school. Did you know that most students drop out in the first year of high school? Did you know that 24 percent of our students repeat the 9

Welcome to Our Web Site Guilford Youth mentoring is a unique collaboration of the Youth and Family Services Bureau, Guilford Public Schools, and volunteers from the local community. Our goal is to provide support, guidance and advocacy to children during their critical transition from childhood to adolescence. We began with 12 mentor/student pairs in Guilford High School in February 2000-now we are working towards having 100 student/mentor pairs in GHS, Adams Middle School, Calvin Leete and Guilford Lakes elementary schools. This past Fall, the program has expanded into the Baldwin Middle School and the Melissa Jones Elementary School. Last year GYM's volunteers provided over 4,000 hours of service to the children of Guilford. We currently have many new mentors in training as the program continues to grow.

Children dream big. Even these "at risk" kids envision bright futures:
Many "at risk" kids have enormous potential but lack the self-esteem and guidance to attempt academic challenges and make positive choices.
Some of them lack the hope even to dream. But with the help of a friend, a confidante, a special person who cares - a mentor like you - they have a lifeline and a positive role model.
Tamara, Jeff and Orlando are working with mentors - people like you - who encourage them by example and help them stay in school, giving them a chance at achieving their dreams.
All this can happen with just one hour a week of your time.
Children of today are the leaders of tomorrow.
They are our future.

As a mentor, you might help a student learn vocabulary words, negotiate a schedule for completing make-up work, or simply listen to him talk. You'd be surprised how a child's whole future can hinge on a small triumph like getting an "A" on a math paper or finding resources to help with everyday problems or goal-setting for the future.
Whatever you do, by simply being yourself and being with a student, you are a reminder that she or he has value and the potential to succeed. When students realize that someone cares about them, school absenteeism decreases, academic performance increases and students gain the self-assurance to avoid destructive social pressures.
