The National Mentoring Center is pleased to announce the release of Foundations of Successful Youth Mentoring: A Guidebook for Program Development . Intended for both new and established programs, the guidebook outlines the program components that mentoring programs of all shapes and sizes should have in place to build strong mentoring relationships and ensure program sustainability. Drawing from results of the national evaluation of Juvenile Mentoring Program (JUMP) grantees, a comprehensive review of youth mentoring research and literature, and the NMC's own experience as a technical assistance provider, the Foundations guide identifies 31 separate program elements across five broad categories of program design:
  • Strong agency capacity for service delivery
  • Effective program practices
  • Strong formal partnerships and informal collaborations
  • Sustainable resource development and funding, and
  • Useful program evaluation Research and observation has shown that programs that do not have this foundation for service delivery and program growth in place are at a greater risk for program failure and are less likely to meet program goals. The guidebook provides users with a discussion of each program component, self-assessment questions to help them think through each aspect of program design and implementation, and recommended resources that can assist in the planning and growth of the program. It is designed to cover all the key elements of running a program, while also being flexible enough for use across a wide variety of program models (community-based, school-based, faith-based, etc...).

Youth Mentoring by Mark Fulop Welcome to Youth Mentoring! In this section, you will find the following: Introduction Youth mentoring popularly claims mythical origins in Homer's Odyssey, where Odysseus asks his friend Mentor to look after his son Telemachus while he goes off to fight the Trojan War (Freedman, 1993). While there is some debate about whether or not the relationship between Mentor and Telemachus meets mentoring criteria, the inclination to date the concept of mentoring to 800 BC suggests that the mentoring relationship has long been part of our history. Historically, older generations have passed on wisdom to younger generations through oral histories, stories, ceremonies, rituals and apprenticeships. However, within the fragmented and fractured societies that exist in some of today's western nations, inter-generational connection and social bonds have weakened, and the organic drive to protect and nurture future generations has incrementally been losing its influence.

Can I copy any part of the Activity Books (English or Bilingual)? How does homeland security relate to the Good Knight Program? All Americans were asked by President Bush to be more "aware" after September 11. Our children were confused and afraid, but wanted to help do something pro-active. The Good Knight Program has been instilling awareness in our children since it began. All of us need to be aware of everything around us including the behavior of individuals we deal with on a daily basis. Terrorism is committed by criminals who use certain behavior patterns to gain access to areas, get information, etc. By learning these behavior patterns our children become more confident; by teaching that information to others our children develop stronger self-esteem and good citizenship.

Designing a Mentoring Program: Four Dimensions As the popularity of youth mentoring programs increases, so does the number and kinds of programs. While the growing availability of mentoring programs has the potential to positively affect the lives of youth people, several caveats should be considered before selecting or designing a mentoring program for your community. The most established and well-researched mentoring model involves a caring adult who mentors a single youth in a community setting. While there is data demonstrating that a community mentoring program might impact youth health risk behaviors, there is no evidence, as of yet, that other innovative forms of mentoring such as email-based e-mentoring can have the same impact. In order to better understand the essential elements of an effective youth mentoring program, four dimensions of program design are described here. 1. Relationship

    youth mentoring in perspective
Jean E. Rhodes explores the experience of some different youth mentoring programs and concludes that not all approaches to mentoring are equal in impact.. She argues that mentoring programs are not a substitute for a caring family, community support, or a concerted youth policy agenda and that we should ensure that mentor programs are adequately implemented and evaluated, while broadening our efforts to strengthen the caring capacity of adolescents’ families, schools, and communities.

    Effectiveness of volunteer mentoring
Although these findings are encouraging, caution should be used in generalizing them to other mentoring programs. BBBS affiliates tend to carefully screen, train, and support their volunteers, and maintain a degree of quality control. In fact, most BBBS programs require a year’s commitment of their volunteers, to whom they provide at least six hours of training and ongoing supervision. Unfortunately, this level of training and support is not available in many of the mentoring programs that have emerged in recent years. In fact, a survey of more than 700 mentoring programs found that 36% of volunteers received less than two hours of training and 22% received none at all. Similarly, 20% of volunteers “almost never” talk to staff people in their programs and 9% have no contact with staff at all.

    mentoring and young people
There has been a mushrooming of youth mentoring projects across the UK. Yet relatively little is known in the UK about the background to the idea and the principles underlying mentoring initiatives. Kate Philip investigates.
introduction the context the background what is mentoring? ... references Mentoring is now a key element within national and local strategies for working with young people, especially those who are regarded as ‘socially excluded’. As yet, few systematic evaluations of youth mentoring have taken place to enable comparisons to be made between projects and with other forms of youth intervention. It is important to critically analyze the concept and to highlight the distinctive elements of youth mentoring. In this short review we set out to do this by looking at how mentoring links into current preoccupations about young people, and by exploring how mentoring has been defined. We illustrate these points by drawing on findings from a recent study of natural mentoring processes carried out by the author and others.
The idea of mentoring holds great appeal - it conjures up a positive way of bridging boundaries between generations and harks back to notions of large extended families and friendly neighbourhoods within which young people and elders could establish common ground. Some of the literature from North America points to the absence of older guides for young people which is frequently attributed to the flight of the middle classes from inner city areas (Freedman, 1993). Unlike many other forms of youth intervention, it has grabbed the interest of an otherwise diverse group of politicians, policy makers, and practitioners from the public, private and voluntary sectors.

Discussion Forum FAQs Contact Us Site Index All across the country, since 1993, a group of fifteen hospitals has been engaged in a very special mentoring program. At each and every one of these medical centers, teenagers are at work. They might be visiting patients, or delivering supplies. They might be working in the office, out on the unit floor, or in the science research lab. In practically every department, on nearly every floor, teenagers are engaged in a myriad of carefully supervised jobs.
These students are all part of the Youth Mentoring Program, a nationwide initiative that links neighborhood middle school and high school youth with hospital staff who volunteer as mentors.
The Youth Mentoring Program was supported by the Commonwealth Fund, a national foundation engaged in independent research on health and social issues. It is administered by The Johns Hopkins Hospital. The fifteen participating hospitals are all major urban medical centers.
The Youth Mentoring Program is the result of extensive planning, ongoing experimentation, and the careful identification of best practices. Now in full bloom, the program is turning out an impressive array of highly focused, outgoing students who are knowledgeable about careers, comfortable in the work place, and ambitious about the future.

Discussion Forum FAQs Contact Us Site Index A Report from Public/Private Ventures Relationships in a Career Mentoring Program:
Lessons Learned from the Hospital Youth Mentoring Program Executive Summary Research on mentoring programs has demonstrated that a carefully structured mentoring program can be an effective intervention for disadvantaged youth. It can significantly reduce the initiation of drug and alcohol use, improve school attendance and performance, improve relationships with peers and family, and make youth less likely to commit certain forms of violence (Tierney and Grossman, 1995). But what we know about mentoring's effectiveness relates only to young teenagers and only to youth in programs where the mentoring relationship is friendship-oriented, focusing on giving youth extra emotional support. So the question remains: "What is the potential of mentoring for older teens?" As youth get older, many become increasingly disconnected from traditional institutions, such as the school, family and community organizations (Sipe and Ma, 1998). This disconnect often occurs at critical times during the transition to adulthood. Youth may not come into contact with adults who have the knowledge and resources to help them form and achieve post-secondary education and career goals. Traditional programs that aimed to fill this gap, such as employment and training programs and basic skills training, have not been able to do so with much effectiveness (Bloom et al., 1993).

Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program The mission of the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program is to connect Calaveras County young people in 1st grade through 12th grade with positive adult role models who will offer support, guidance and friendship and help the youth make healthy life decisions. Our goal is to offer concrete, one-to-one support to youth in setting and achieving personal goals and maximizing their potential. You can help!
    Mentoring Matters
Youth today lack "natural mentors" because of changes in our society. More kids grow up in isolated communities or move from place to place, have a single parent or two working parents, and don't have access to an extended family. They find themselves alone too much of the time.
One documented common factor among youth getting into trouble is the absence of a consistent, caring adult outside the family to provide guidance and support-in other words, a mentor. Be A Mentor
Mentors spend at least one or two hours a week with their assigned "mentee" for a year. We provide training and support, fun activities and ideas, and an eager child; you develop a friendship that can last a lifetime. For more information, E-mail Kathryn Eustis KEustis@ccoe.k12.ca.us.
