The Claiborne Parish Cooperative Extension Service's 4-H Youth Program is designed for boys and girls from ages 9 through 19 and is based on the principle of "learning by doing." 4-H enables young people to learn technical facts and life skills useful in everyday activities. Club and community activities aid in the development of citizenship and leadership skills. 4-H also offers awards in recognition of self-improvement and work well done. The 4-H club program is available to students in public and private schools in Claibome Parish in grades 4-12. Through the 4-H experience club members have the opportunity to become leaders in their local clubs and participate in fun "learn by doing" projects. Special project days, usually Saturday events, are offered during the year as added enhancement for projects. Other activities include a one-week summer camp for outstanding club members in grades 4-6. The cost of the camp is minimal and some 4-Her's win scholarships to attend. Challenge Camp, a special camp designed to meet the needs of seventh graders, is offered on a weekend during the school year. for older members in grades 8-12 who have distinguishes themselves in their project work, competition is offered on the state level.

In 1917, the 4-H Youth Program was born. As the decades have passed and lifestyles have changed, 4-H has evolved into the largest co-educational organization in the world, with 4-H in some form found in eighty-three countries around the world. 4-H Clubs
4-H Clubs are groups of young people who share a common interest in a project area. Clubs are led by volunteer 4-H leaders. 4-H clubs are unique because 4-H members choose what they want to learn about and each club has a different focus. 4-H members learn by doing . Club meetings involve hands-on activities, not lectures. Clubs begin their activities at different times during the year and the number of meetings varies from club to club.

    Youth Development
    Current Situation
4-H is the youth component of the Mississippi State University Extension Service, with academic ties to Mississippi State University. The purpose of 4-H is to help youth develop life skills that will help them become productive, responsible adults. These life skills include developing positive self-concepts, establishing effective interpersonal relationships, and learning practical skills for life. The Mississippi 4-H program combines the cooperative efforts of youth, volunteer leaders, Mississippi State University and Alcorn State University, federal-state-local governments, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Youth ages 8 through 18 can be active members of 4-H club programs. Special programs are available for youth beginning in kindergarten. In addition to camps, special interest programs, project clubs, and community clubs, the 4-H school enrichment program is another way to teach life skills to youth. 4-H values its relationship with Mississippi's schools and welcomes the opportunity to provide educationally sound, research-based, action-oriented curricula for use in classrooms.
