169. Seattle Education Access
A nonprofit organization providing educational advocacy and opportunity for lowincome and self-supporting youth and young adults in Washington State.
http://www.seattleeducationaccess.org/
We believe that a good education includes preparing for meaningful work, but that vocational training is just one small piece in a big, gorgeous puzzle. We believe that education should embrace the whole person in his or her lifelong adventure to explore the whole world. We believe that our job is to help students realize their dreams, not impose our standards on them. Our doors are open to any teen or young adult who wants a better education but is being held back by inadequate financial or social support. The transition from adolescence to adulthood is a difficult journey, even with financial security and the support of a loving family. Not all young people have these resources. Self-supporting students struggle to make homes and lives for themselves without a safety net. We applaud the bravery of these individuals, and seek ways to make it easier for them to complete their educations and find meaningful work at a living wage. We serve our students through four programs.
  • College Success: we provide academic advising, mentoring, tutoring, and scholarships to self-supporting college students and college-bound young people. Educational Enrichment: we provide empowering learning experiences to low-income and at-risk teens and young adults who are not yet ready for college, or who do not wish to go to college.

Communicating with Elected Officials and Candidates for Office
There are many ways that you can communicate your ideas and beliefs to elected officials and candidates for office, including letters, email, phone calls, personal visits, and testimony at a hearing. LETTERS Letters are a simple way of communicating your ideas, concerns and expectations. Elected officials and candidates value personal letters, rather than form letters. PROTOCOL I dentify yourself as a constituent, voter, parent, grandparent, or volunteer, and a member of MD CAN. Clearly state the purpose of your letter. What is the issue? What is your position? What do you want the elected official or candidate to do? Write about only one bill or issue per letter. Use personal experience as evidence of your position. Explain how the issue will affect you or people you care about.
