The mission of the Youth Advocacy Project is to PROTECT and ADVANCE the LEGAL and HUMAN RIGHTS OF CHILDREN, and to PROMOTE their healthy development through active partnerships with the COMMUNITY.

Established by the Committee for Public Counsel Services , the Youth Advocacy Project began in 1992 with a goal of protecting and advancing the legal and human rights of children and promoting their healthy development. YAP's mission is based on two core beliefs: children, like adults, have human and legal rights. At the same time, children are different from adults. Physically, cognitively, emotionally, and psychologically they are works in progress - they require stability and protection to develop their capacities for intelligence, productivity, and empathy. We strive therefore to make the juvenile justice system in Massachusetts one in which children's rights are respected and their potential for growth is nourished. It is in this way that the courts can facilitate the development of personal strengths and diminish the risk of recidivism in children. In working to actualize our mission, we have developed several complementary forms of advocacy.

10. Statewide Youth Advocacy
Welcome to the Statewide youth advocacy Web Site. Statewide youth advocacy exists because New York State continues to fail its children.
http://www.syanys.org/home.htm
Connect for Kids has compiled some of the Web's strongest resources for parents, teachers and community members, to help all of our nation's children work through the tragic and unprecedented events of September 11, 2001.
Welcome to the Statewide Youth Advocacy Web Site. This site was designed to provide access to information, services, and ideas that we can all use to improve the lives of New York's children. We invite parents, professionals, community and religious leaders to join us in what must be a crusade for all of our children. Statewide Youth Advocacy exists because New York State continues to fail its children. Our children's health, education, safety, and security are deteriorating at an alarming rate. In a recent report, the Carnegie Corporation of New York documented "a quiet crisis" characterized by "a pattern of neglect [stacking] the deck" against the healthy development of a "staggering number" of American children. Our job as advocates is to work against that stacked deck. We must assure that every child has the love and support necessary to grow up to be a healthy and productive adult. We hope this web site will help empower you to speak up on behalf of the children in your community and across our state. Because children do not vote, we must be their voice.

They also may accidentally get caught in the middle of the violence and become hurt or killed. Chaos - Moods change quickly in the child’s home, so they are never sure what to expect. This puts a child on guard at all times. Fear and Tension - Children in violent homes will become afraid of everyone and everything because they never know what to expect. They will generally learn not to trust anyone. They begin to believe that anyone can hurt them, so it is better to just stay away. Confusion - The child in a violent home learns that hitting is used to solve problems. However, those outside the home are telling them that hitting is wrong. Isolation - In violent families, the family generally becomes cut off from the outside world. The child then withdraws from friends and adults.

California Youth Advocacy Network 2004 Youth Coalition Recognition Program Applications are now being accepted! In February 2001, the California Youth Advocacy Network (CYAN) created a Youth Coalition Recognition Program for tobacco-prevention agencies that have active youth coalitions. During the first five rounds of the Recognition Program, thirty-one youth coalitions from across the state were rewarded with gift certificates of up to $150 each. Once again, CYAN would like to acknowledge youth coalitions that are creating positive change in their schools, communities, and throughout California. Now is the time for you to let your peers in tobacco prevention know what an amazing job your youth advocates have been doing. By nominating your coalition for this award, you acknowledge the impact their work has on your community. A youth and adult review board will evaluate each application and recognize the outstanding coalitions with a certificate of achievement. Gift certificates of up to $150 will also be awarded to top coalitions. The selected youth coalitions can choose how to use the gift certificate. Examples from winners of the previous round include: Baskin Robbins, Borders Books, and Target. In addition, CYAN will recognize the selected coalitions through the Advocate’s Voice Newsletter, press releases, PARTNERS, and the Cyanonline.org website. CYAN is currently accepting applications for the recognition program this spring. The next application deadline is May 28, 2004 at 5:00 p.m. and will be based on coalition activities occurring between April 2003 and April 2004. Awardees will be announced Friday, June 4th. Previous winners are eligible to apply.
