Week 2: Young Adults and Literature Course Notes I. What determines if a book is young adult literature? Favorites from teen years mentioned by members classes past:
The Scarlet Letter The Heart of Darkness M. Higgins Clark's books Piers Anthony's books Steven King's books As I Lay Dying
Where the Red Fern Grows To Kill a Mockingbird Anne of Green Gables Tess of the D'Urbervilles
Dear God It's Me Margaret Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing Christopher Pike books Matilda Hardy Boys Nancy Drew Charlotte's Web A Day No Pigs Would Die Jacob Have I Loved Harry Potter Stuart Little R.L. Stine
So how do we define YA literature?

Get into small groups. Discuss what you would look for in a book to let you know that it was for YAs as opposed to children or adults.
    • Has a teenage protagonist? Conveys a young adult's perspective? Was written for young adults? Is read by young adults?
Was written for young adults? This is often true but there are many exceptions:
    • The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card Imani All Mine by Conni Porter The Lovely Bones by Annie Siebold Rats Saw God Rob Thomas

The fact that there are so many “adult” books which appeal to YA has led to a recognition by the ALA with the Alex Awards The other side of this is that many authors of YA fiction assert that they are not thinking of audience as a primary consideration (if at all) when they write.

Children and Young Adult Literature on the Internet: an Introduction Ruth Kinnersley Abstract This presentation is intended to introduce some Internet sites related to literature for children and young adults, and to provide a sampling of the types of sites which are available. Guides to children's and young adult literature on the web; sites which contain full-text, reviews, or bibliographies of children's literature; teaching activities; and general sites for kids which include children's and young adult literature are examined. Those who are interested in Internet-based teaching activities, or ideas for the use of children's and young adult literature in the classroom, would find this presentation useful. Introduction
In selecting sites for this presentation, a number of factors were taken into consideration: comprehensiveness of a site (the depth and/or breadth of material related to children's literature), how well the site is maintained and updated, who created or maintains the site, and individual features, such as unique lists, chat areas, and search engines.

    MELUS
Summer, 2002 by Katharine Capshaw Smith
In The Mis-Education of the Negro (1933), Carter G. Woodson asserts that "there would be no lynching if it did not start in the schoolroom" (2). By suggesting the formative influence of children's culture on social relations, Woodson highlights an idea that courses through the body of ethnic American children's literature. Whether writing in the nineteenth, twentieth, or twenty-first centuries, authors infuse texts with the hope that through childhood, that potent period in an individual's development, sensibilities can be transformed. Children's literature allows readers a means to reconceptualize their relationship to ethnic and national identities. Telling stories to a young audience becomes the conduit for social and political revolution. For some readers of MELUS, this volume may be their first introduction to the vital field of ethnic children's literature. Most interesting for scholars will be the field's special contextual and theoretical issues. A primary factor that distinguishes ethnic children's literature from adult literature is its complexly layered audience, for children's literature reaches various adult mediators as well as child readers. Publishers, librarians, schoolteachers, and parents read and evaluate children's texts in anticipation of a young audience, which is also multiply constituted. Ethnic children's literature becomes a particularly intense site of ideological and political contest, for various groups of adults struggle over which versions of ethnic identity will become institutionalized in school, home, and library settings; groups and individuals often advance specific reading and purchasing guidelines.

    Spring 1999
In 1957, the Association of Young People's Librarians became a separate division called Young Adult Services Division (YASD). YASD was interested in the improvement and extension of services to young people in all types of libraries (Rogers 1979). Social change in the late 1960s was seen in library service and literature. Novels such as The Outsiders and The Pigman seemed to make it clear that young adult novels were a special type of literature and not just children's books for older readers (Jones 1993). In the late 1970s, young adult novels were growing in popularity and acceptance as they covered all of the issues of the time. Libraries began to provide space to attract young adults to the library (Rogers 1979). Library facilities were designed or rearranged to make young adults comfortable and included new programming that included concerts and dramatic productions (Rogers 1979). The report of the National Center for Education Statistics pointed out the contradiction of young adult services. Young adults are using libraries, but they use them more when a young adult librarian is present. Yet, library generalists seem to be serving this population. The library directors recognize the importance of young adult services. However, the question still unanswered is are libraries going to provide the programming and outreach activities to young adults (Jones 1993)? Libraries expend a lot of energy on encouraging children to read and to use the public library through story time and other programming. However, once these same children enter junior and high school it appears that libraries are no longer interested in providing services to them. As evidenced by the NCES survey report, young adults are not being served by young adult librarians in 89 percent of public libraries in the study. The underlying question seems to be do young adults deserve specialized service?
