Literature for Children and Young Adults
E XAMINING ISSUES OF VIOLENCE
AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION
by Alita Zurav Letwin This annotated bibliography is designed to tap the rich resource of children’s literature to stimulate discussion of violence and of alternative, peaceful ways to resolve conflict. Its focus is on books appropriate for upper elementary and middle school students, though a number of books can be used in the early elementary grades as well. These books are chosen with a number of criteria in mind. The most important is that issues of violent and nonviolent conflict resolution are clearly presented so that students can examine the following general questions:
  • What is conflict?
  • What is violence?
  • What are some causes of violence?
  • What are some consequences of violence?
  • What alternatives to violence can be used when conflicts need to be settled?
  • How can we prevent violence?
Literature is particularly helpful in discussing such issues, not only by describing conflicts, but also by indicating why the conflict occurred and what followed in its aftermath.  A novel or short story might show the anger that led to violence, and the fear, unhappiness, hurt, and despair that violence can leave in its wake. Because literature is often dramatic, it can strike an emotional chord that holds student interest while it broadens perspective and heightens awareness of one’s own and other’s feelings and beliefs. Using literature for this purpose can, in turn, awaken an interest in literature itself.  Therefore the second criterion used in choosing these books is that they model the qualities of “good” literature: the author should use language beautifully, develop sensitive, believable characterizations and use involving, well-crafted plots.  There are many books that are written for young people that raise the issues of this bibliography; there are few that have literary value as well.  Not all the books included here achieve the same literary heights, but none are mediocre.

71. On The Question Of Integrating
Crutcher doesn t get agitated often, but he gets agitated about the idea ofyoung adult literature existing separate from literature in general.

Editors: James Blasingame James.Blasingame@asu.edu Lori A. Goodson LAGoodson@aol.com Spring 1997 Volume 24, Number 3 On the Question of Integrating Young Adult Literature into the Mainstream
Terry Davis
Chris Crutcher walked into B. Dalton's in downtown Spokane after his first novel Running Loose was published. He says he was embarrassed to be kicking around in there looking for his own book, but he also wanted to see it in one of the places where books are supposed to be on a bookstore shelf. He looked in the teenage section, of course. He continued to browse, and as he was walking by the section for little kids, he saw it. Crutcher says he'd been in a few bookstores since the book was published, but he'd never introduced himself or asked about the book because he didn't want it to seem like he was being arrogant. This time, though, he grabbed the book and walked up to the cash register. "Why in the world," he asked the people, "is this book in a section for first-through-third graders?" They told him this was the only section where the shelves were high enough for the books to stand up. "I don't normally say this," Crutcher replied, "but I'm the author of this book, and I'd rather not have it there. I would rather not have it in your store."

Home Membership Officers Contributors ... In Our ROYAL Opinion ROYAL (Reviewers of Young Adult Literature) is a group of professional librarians and educators from the Greater Cincinnati Area who meet regularly to share information about books we have read. It is an Interest Group of the Greater Cincinnati Library Consortium (GCLC) The members are school and public librarians who serve young adults and children. ROYAL meets on the 2nd Tuesday of odd-numbered months (January, March, etc.) at Xavier University. If you are interested in joining send an e-mail to gclc@gclc-lib.org Membership is $5 a year, and is collected at the September meeting. How it works Publishers send copies of their new titles to the ROYAL group. These books are aimed at the target audience of YA readers, grades 7-12 (some publishers also send titles for primary, elementary, professional and adult levels). At each meeting, reviews from the last set of books are reviewed orally. The participating reviewers get to choose books to read and review for the next meeting. The number of books taken is based on the number of reviewers at the meeting and the number of books received. Two copies of the reviews are sent to the publisher, and one copy is kept in the archives. The member gets to keep the books that she or he reviews. Most of the reviewers add the books to their library's collection. Most members add close to $1,000 worth of free books to their home libraries.
