Course Description "Of all passages, coming of age, or reaching adolescence, is the purest, in that it is the loneliest. In birth one is not truly conscious; in marriage one has a partner; even death is faced with a life's experience by one's side." David Van Biema, 1991 A recent survey concluded that 25 percent of public library users are young adults; in other words, one out of every four individuals entering a public library is between the ages of 12 and 18. Clearly, young adults are an important public library user group, with needs and concerns very distinct from those of either children or adult users. This course will begin with an examination of teenagers, their cognitive and social development, their needs as library users, and their reading and viewing interests. From this base, we will proceed to examine the characteristics of YA literature, the development of print and non-print YA collections, specialized YA programming, and techniques for marketing YA services. Some of the specific topics to be covered include an overview of theories of adolescent psychology, a discussion of censorship issues in YA literature, an examination of specialized programming such as reading clubs, YA advisory boards, and booktalks, and an analysis of high interest/low reading level materials.

Assignment Defining Adolescent Literature Back to HU2548 Directions: We can learn a great deal about how/what people think about adolescent/young adult literature, by looking at the various web sites that discuss such literature. These sites are are like archeological artifacts (e.g., tools, clay pots, old buildings). If you study them long and hard enough, you can learn quite a bit about the culture that produced them and about what this culture thinks of adolescents! Working in pairs in the CCLI, visit at least one of the sites in each of the categories below and browse around. Take notes on the following questions for each site:
  • According to this site, what is adolescent/young adult literature? What are its primary characteristics? According to this site, who are adolescent readers/young adult readers? What characteristics do they share? According to this site what are the typical genres(e.g., adventure, romance, science fiction) included in adolescent/young adult literature?
