"Women's history is the primary tool of women's emancipation." - Gerda Lerner
There has been an increase in more lengthy and more theoretically based critical analyses of works for children and young people, but too often this work is assumed to be esoteric, isolated from and unrelated to either children or the teaching of children's literature. Many who teach children's literature dismiss this work as being that of those who have little sense of the child for whom the literature was created and even less for the practical problems of bringing that child and the literature together. On the other hand, there has been a proliferation of books about children's literature that describe both literary works and activities with these books but have little relation to theory, research, or even the practical problem's of one's own teaching. We are interested in what our colleagues do, but we are more interested in

This genre includes many national, cultural and religious heritages. Works can be subdivided into some major groups: East Asian [Chinese, Japanese and Korean]; South Asia [India and Pakistan]; Southeast Asia [primarily Vietnamese and Pacific Islanders]; and Middle East. Most Asian Americans are concerned about being human [Lenz]. Caught between a fast-paced world of progress and a mysterious world of mythology and legends, many books in this genre focus on a perpetual search for one's self.

I highly recommend Monseau's Responding to Young Adult Literature . . .[It offers] inspiration and ideas for the challenging and important goal of promoting a love of reading. English Journal
For too long, there has been a stigma attached to young adult literature: the assumption that because it appeals to adolescents, it can't possibly be worthy of a place in the language arts curriculum. Attempts to legitimize the genre, furthermore, have concentrated only on the literature, not on how readers respond to it. In Responding to Young Adult Literature , Virginia Monseau uncovers the power of young adult literature to evoke the kind of literary experiences that will keep students reading and lead them to a deeper understanding of literature in general and the relationship between literature and life in particular. The book serves two purposes: to describe and discuss the oral and written response of adolescents and adults to young adult literature; and to explore the significance of this knowledge to the study of literature in the classroom.
