Holocene Climate Change and Human Impact on the Landscape, Wadi Shumylya, Yemen The goals of this project are to document past interactions between human activity, landscape modification, and climate in a region which is presently extremely arid and supports little vegetation. Abundant archaeological evidence exists that suggests agriculture was much more widespread and evolved alongside the development of irrigation technology during a period when rainfall was more plentiful. We are looking for additional evidence in the region to test the hypothesis that cultivation of domesticated crops was being carried out as early as 7,000 years ago, and even in the earliest agricultural activities, humans were having a substantial impact on the landscape through the modification of fluvial systems. Research is also being conducted to document the timing and magnitude of changing precipitation patterns in the region using a variety of paleoclimate proxy data. Research is being carried out collaboratively with the Minnesota RASA (Roots of Agriculture in Southern Arabia) project, headed by Dr. Joy McCorriston, and the Ministry of Antiquities in Yemen. Funding for the project has been provided by the National Science Foundation, University of Minnesota, and Canadian Occidental Petroleum Company (CANOXY). Fieldwork began in February-March, 1998, and hopefully will continue in January-February 2000 (depending on funding). View looking across the southwest corner of the Arabian peninsula towards Africa. Although still moisture limited, adequate rainfall and more abundant vegetation supported the cultural shift to agrarian subsistence farming, perhaps as early as 7,000 - 8,000 years ago.

Ripartiamo diretti a Sanaa tra catene fittissime di montagne gigantesche che si perdono nella nebbia, mentre il nostro autista mastica continuamente foglie di quat che poi sputa. A Sanaa la guida ci fa salire sulla terrazza di un vecchio palazzo per farci godere lo splendido panorama della città con le sue abitazioni riccamente fregiate, guglie, moschee e minareti lontani e vicini. The Yemen Language Center will provide housing accommodation, 2 meals per day 5 days per week (breakfast and lunch), a monthly stipend for living expenses, visa extensions, private Arabic instruction 2 hours per day 5 days per week, and occasional day trips to historical sites of Yemen, and round-trip airfare. PAINTINGS FROM YEMEN Paintings by : NIZAR MEZHAR This collection of paintings by Nizar Mezhar reflect the people and places of Yemen. Through these paintings the artist seem to highlight the differences in attire, building styles and the geogrpahy of the various areas in Yemen. This type of dagger is usually covered by silver, and is worn by the people who worked for the court system, and those who were educated in the Koran and Islam. A woman from the mountain of Saber stands against the background of the city of Taiz. The women of the mountain of Saber commute daily to Taiz, for their livelihood. They sell the fruit and other agriculture products grown on the terraces of the mountain to the people of the city. They're ver strong women, who have very good business sense. Yemenis have settled both the valleys and the mountains, here the ground is relatively flat. The dress, the dagger are different from above and the head scarf is worn differently in different areas. The unique houses of old Sana'a stand in the background of an a market full of people.
