In November 1989, the leaders of the YAR (Ali Abdallah Saleh) and the PDRY (Ali Salim Al-Bidh) agreed on a draft unity constitution originally drawn up in 1981. The Republic of Yemen (ROY) was declared on May 22, 1990. Ali Abdallah Saleh became President, and Ali Salim Al-Bidh became Vice President. A 30-month transitional period for completing the unification of the two political and economic systems was set. A presidential council was jointly elected by the 26-member YAR advisory council and the 17-member PDRY presidium. The presidential council appointed a Prime Minister, who formed a Cabinet. There was also a 301-seat provisional unified Parliament, consisting of 159 members from the north, 111 members from the south, and 31 independent members appointed by the chairman of the council. A unity constitution was agreed upon in May 1990 and ratified by the populace in May 1991. It affirmed Yemen's commitment to free elections, a multiparty political system, the right to own private property, equality under the law, and respect of basic human rights. Parliamentary elections were held on April 27, 1993. International groups assisted in the organization of the elections and observed actual balloting. The resulting Parliament included 143 GPC, 69 YSP, 63 Islaah (Yemeni grouping for reform, a party composed of various tribal and religious groups), 6 Baathis, 3 Nasserists, 2 Al Haq, and 15 independents. The head of Islaah, Paramount Hashid Sheik Abdallah Bin Husayn Al-Ahmar, is the speaker of Parliament.

Historically, the name refers to the Hadhramaut sultanates, a collective term for the Q'uaiti and Kathiri sultanates, which were loosely under a British protectorate of South Arabia, guided by the British resident at Aden, until 1967. It consists of a narrow, arid coastal plain bounded by the steep escarpment of a broad plateau (averaging 4,500 ft/1,370 m), with a very sparse network of deeply sunk wadis (seasonal watercourses). The undefined northern edge of the Hadhramaut slopes down to the

The earliest recorded civilizations of S Arabia were the Minaean and Sabaean. The Sabaean kingdom (see Sheba ) flourished from c.750 B.C. to c.115 B.C. , with Marib (located east of Sana) the capital after c.600 B.C. Sabaean society was highly developed technically, as witnessed by the remains of a great dam at Marib that was the center of a large irrigation system. The Himyarites, who followed the Sabaeans, were invaded by the Romans (1st cent. B.C. ) and were occupied by the Ethiopians (c. A.D. A.D. After the breakup of the caliphate, Yemen came under the control of the rising Rassite dynasty, imams of the Zaidi sect who built the theocratic political structure of Yemen that lasted until 1962. The Fatamid caliphs of Egypt occupied most of Yemen from c.1000 until c.1175, when it fell to the Ayyubids, who ruled until c.1250. By 1520, Yemen formed part of the Ottoman Empire, which exercised at least nominal sovereignty until the end of World War I. A turbulent wave of Wahhabism, a puritanical sect of Islam, swept across the Arabian peninsula at the opening of the 19th cent. and drove out the Zaidi imams. Ibrahim Pasha of Egypt, acting in the name of the Ottoman sultan, drove out the Wahhabis in 1818, and the Egyptians remained until 1840. The Ottoman Turks then replaced the Egyptians, giving the imam full autonomy in the interior.

http://www.mideasttravelling.net/yemen/aden/aden_history.htm
Aden - H istory L ittle is known about Aden during the early centuries of the Islamic history. Historians report that, Ali al-Suleyhi added Aden and its hinterland to his sphere of influence during the early years of the Suleyhi kingdom. When Arwa Bint Ahmed was married to Ali's son al Mukarram, she received as a dowry a yearly revenue from Aden, amounting to 100,000 gold dinars (the high amount sheds light on the prosperity of the port). Aden was by this time ruled by the Bani Zurrey. The rule of the Bani Zurrey ended in 1174 when the Ayyubites, arriving from Egypt conquered most of Yemen. When the Portuguese sailor Vasco da Gama discovered the route around the Cape of Good Hope in 1497 AD, he had opened a new chapter in the history of the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. Only sixteen years later, another Portuguese captain Affonso d'Albuquerque had comprehended the strategic significance of Aden and tried to conquer it. But in vain. Aden was a well fortified city under the rule of the Bani Taher. Alarmed by the presence of the Portuguese, the Egyptian Mamlukes occupied the Yemeni Tihama, but failed to conquer Aden like the Portuguese before. It was by treachery that Aden finally fell into the hands of Pasha al-Khadim, Commander of the fleet of Suleman the Magnificent in 153B AD. The same year marked the beginning of the first occupation of Yemen by the Ottoman Turks.

Sana'a - H istory A ccording to popular legend Sana'a was founded by Shem, son of Noah. The story tells of how Shem after coming a long way from the north, finally reached Yemen and found the plain of Sana'a most suitable for settlement. Shem chose originally the western part of the Sana'a plain close to Mount Aiban. When he began to lay the foundations a bird came and picked up his sounding lead. Shem followed the bird convinced that it was sent by Allah to show him a more suitable place. The bird flew to the eastern part of the Sana'a plain and dropped the lead at the foot of Mount Nugum. Shem then laid the foundations for a city that was called "Madinat Sam" (the city of Shem). Later, the name changed to Azal (from the biblical Uzal -Gen. 10:27 - the sixth son of Joktan, the Arabic Qahtan). Finally, it was called Sana'a, meaning "the fortified one", in ancient inscription. The first inscriptions referring to Sana'a as a city date back to the first century AD. Yet Sana'a, as a citadel along the trade route between Aden and Mecca, watching over a large seasonal market, is certainly older than that. Mohammed Al-Hamdani, the 10

The British, who had set up a protectorate area around the southern port of Aden in the 19th century , withdrew in from what became South Yemen . Three years later, the southern government adopted a Marxist orientation. The massive exodus of hundreds of thousands of Yemenis from the south to the north contributed to two decades of hostility between the states. Egypt under Nasser aided the southern Marxist Yemen force militarily, including the use of chemical weapons, specifically mustard gas and perhaps an organophosphate nerve agent , against royalist troops in North Yemen. The two countries were formally unified as the Republic of Yemen in
