T he Republic of Yemen, at the south-west corner of the Arabian Peninsula, has traded by land and sea since ancient times. Mid-way between Europe and the Far East, Aden lies on a major world trading route through the Suez Canal. It is one of the largest natural harbours in the world with an area of about 70 km2 of sheltered water surrounded by Jebel Shamsan, Khormaksar, and the shore which extends to the hills of Little Aden. The Port of Aden consists of the Inner Harbour, the Oil Harbour serving Aden Refinery and the anchorage and approach channels of he Outer harbour. T he City of Aden draws its vitality from the Port of Aden. The story of Aden as a trading centre stretches back over 3000 years. Marco Polo and Ibn Batuta visited it in the 11th and 12th Centuries. In the 1800's, Aden grew as ship fuelling port, holding stocks of coal and water supplies for the early steamers. Port services expanded after the Suez Canal opened in 1869 as Aden grew to become one of the busiest ship bunkering and tax-free-shopping and trading ports in the world by the 1950's. Barges took cargo between ships berthed in the Inner Harbour and the wharves. Coastal vessels and dhows carried cargoes to and from regional ports.

North Yemen became independent of the Ottoman Empire in 1918. The British, who had set up a protectorate area around the southern port of Aden in the 19th century, withdrew in 1967 from what became South Yemen. Three years later, the southern government adopted a Marxist orientation. The massive exodus of hundreds of thousands of Yemenis from the south to the north contributed to two decades of hostility between the states. The two countries were formally unified as the Republic of Yemen in 1990. A southern secessionist movement in 1994 was quickly subdued. In 2000, Saudi Arabia and Yemen agreed to a delimitation of their border.

Click HERE On October 12, 2000, the USS Cole, an American Naval Destroyer, entered the harbor of Aden, Yemen to refuel. After the mooring of the ship to a buoy, the refueling operation began. Approximately 45 minutes into the refueling, a small ship, described as either a Zodiac-type rubber craft or a fiberglass boat, placed itself alongside the Cole and blew up. The resulting explosion tore an 40 by 40 foot hole in the side of the destroyer, causing casualties among the ship's crew. The casualties total 17 dead and an additional 39 wounded. The injured were first evacuated to Yemeni medical facilities onshore for treatment and later evacuation to the U.S. base at Ramstein, Germany and a French military hospital in nearby Djibouti. In the words of Admiral Vern Clark, the Chief of U.S. Naval Operations, "...this was clearly a terrorist act.'' As the United States later learned, the attack was carried out by terrorists associated with Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda network.

History of Yemen
Ancient history
In ancient times, Yemen was comprized of a number of kingdoms including Saba (referenced as Sheba in the Bible), Qataban, and Hadhramaut . In the 5th century, the kingdom of Himyar grew as a powerful nation with boundaries similar to that of modern-day Yemen and extended its influence into the Hejaz . Dhu Nuwas, a Himyarite king, changed the state religion to Judaism in the beginning of the 6th century and began to massacre the Christians. Outraged, the Christian King of Axum with the encouragement of the Byzantine Emperor Justin I invaded and annexed Yemen. About forty years later, Yemen fell to Persia , and then almost immediately after that, to the Muslim jihad. Yemen was one of the oldest centers of civilization in the Near East. Between the 12th century BC and the 6th century AD, it was part of the Minaean, Sabaean, and Himyarite kingdoms, which controlled the lucrative spice trade, and later came under Ethiopian and Persian rule. In the 7th century, Islamic caliphs began to exert control over the area. After this caliphate broke up, the former north Yemen came under control of Imams of various dynasties usually of the Zaidi sect, who established a theocratic political structure that survived until modern times. (Imam is a religious term. The Shiites apply it to the prophet Muhammad's son-in-law Ali, his sons Hasan and Hussein, and subsequent lineal descendants, whom they consider to have been divinely ordained unclassified successors of the prophet.)

A view of the mountain in Yemen Prehistoric tools and settlements have been found in various places in Yemen. Archaeologists recently discovered that irrigation in the Marib oasis dates back at least 5 millennia . The ancient South Arabian Kingdoms which started out as theocracies, all developed in the mouths of large wadis between the mountains and the great desert . The kingdom of Saba with its capital at Marib was the most powerful, at times dominating all of the South Arabia . The great Marib Dam, built to harness and exploit the seasonal floods by means of an elaborate irrigation system , provided sustenance for some 30,000 inhabitants and was counted among the wonders of the ancient world. The Sabaeans were not only great builders and technicians, but also successful traders .
    Islamic History
Queen Arwa bint Ahmed (Second Queen of Sheba) , well remembered and still loved today, ruled the whole Yemen from her small town in Jiblah for over 60 years until her death at the age of 92. Taiz became a capital in 1174 under Turan Shah al-Ayyubi the brother of the famous Salah Addin who fought Richard the Lionheart in Palestine . It was the centre of a splendid Sultanate, under the Rasulid dynasty from 1229 - 1454, a period of great wealth and building activity . The Zaydi dynasty of Saada lasted longest and was overthrown with the last Imam in 1962. Founded in 897 by Al-Hadi Yahia , a descendant of the prophet, their Shiite teaching of Islam is still adhered to by most of the northern tribes of Yemen.

This agreement, called the Taif Treaty, delineated their common border, though disputes have flared up over the years. Apparently, the official reasons for this current round of border fighting relates to disputes over who owns certain islands in the Red Sea. However, it is also known that the monarchist Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is rather uncomfortable with Yemen's experiment with democracy (Yemen is the only nation on the Arabian Peninsula with a democratic style government). Allegations have been made that Saudi Arabia is attempting to sabotage this democratic regime through military intimidation as well as aiding internal strife within Yemen. (See

Ancient Kingdoms Islam in Yemen Between the eighth and the fourteenth century Yemen was ruled by a series of dynasties. In the mid fifteenth century the mamelukes of Egypt lost power to the Ottomans ( Turks ) . During this period the town of al Moka on the Red sea coast , became the most important coffee port in the world. By the 19th century the British expressed growing interest in the region and had signed series of treaties which was to be known as the south Arabian Protectorate of Great Britain. The Imamate and Modern Yemen After the retreat of the Turks from Yemen in 1918 Imam Yahya ( a Zaidi Imam ) established the Kingdom of Yemen. He was succeeded by his eldest son Imam Ahmed who stayed in power until his death in September 1962 . He was briefly succeeded by his son Crown Prince Mohammed al - Badr who was overthrown by a regime of revolutionaries. The new regime founded the Yemen Arab Republic.

The Imam Ahmad died in September 1962 and was succeeded by his son, Muhammad. Less than a week later, army officers, led by Col (later Marshal) Abdullah as-Sallal, removed the Imam and proclaimed the Yemen Arab Republic.
Civil war ensued between royalist forces, supported by Saudi Arabia, and republicans, aided by Egyptian troops. The republicans gained the upper hand and Egyptian forces withdrew in 1967. In November President Sallal was deposed by a Republican Council.
A cease-fire was arranged in the same month, under the auspices of the Arab League , and soon afterwards both sides agreed to the union of the two Yemens within 18 months. The union was not, however, implemented.
Later in the same month, however, at a meeting between the North and South Yemen Reads of State in Kuwait, arranged by the Arab League, an agreement was signed pledging unification of the two states.
The Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 1990 proved problematic for the Government of Yemen, as the economy was heavily dependent on trade with, and aid from Iraq, and also on aid from Saudi Arabia, which was host to a considerable number of Yemeni expatriate workers.
In December 1990 Yemen assumed the chair of the UN Security Council (which rotates on a monthly basis), and the Government increased its efforts to mediate in the Gulf crisis.

    By Mitchell Bard
1948 Jewish population: 55,000 (in Aden: another 8,000)
    2001: Fewer than 200
In 1922, the government of Yemen reintroduced an ancient Islamic law requiring that Jewish orphans under age 12 be forcibly converted to Islam. In 1947, after the partition vote, Muslim rioters, joined by the local police force, engaged in a bloody pogrom in Aden that killed 82 Jews and destroyed hundreds of Jewish homes. Aden's Jewish community was economically paralyzed, as most of the Jewish stores and businesses were destroyed. Early in 1948, the false accusation of the ritual murder of two girls led to looting. This increasingly perilous situation led to the emigration of virtually the entire Yemenite Jewish community - almost 50,000 - between June 1949 and September 1950 in Operation "Magic Carpet." A smaller, continuous migration was allowed to continue into 1962, when a civil war put an abrupt halt to any further Jewish exodus. Until 1976, when an American diplomat came across a small Jewish community in a remote region of northern Yemen, it was believed the Yemenite Jewish community was extinct. As a result, the plight of Yemenite Jews went unrecognized by the outside world.
