Yemen belongs to Arabia like fish belong in water. Yemen cannot be properly understood as separate from Arabia, whilst Arabia without Yemen would have lost one of its most essential and flavorful ingredients. Yemen has served as a wellspring for people emigrating across the peninsula, many quickly adapting to its surroundings and even settling down for good.
Ancient civilizations
The history of Yemen stretches back over 3,000 years, and its unique culture is still in evidence today in the architecture of its cities, towns and villages. From approximately 1,000 BC this region of the Southern Arabian Peninsula was ruled by three successive civilisations: Minean, Sabaean and Himyarite. These three kingdoms all depended for their wealth on the spice trade. Aromatics such as myrrh and frankincense were greatly prized in the ancient civilised world and were used as part of various rituals in many cultures, including Egyptian, Greek and Roman. In the 11th century BC, land routes through Arabia were greatly improved by using the camel as a beast of burden, and frankincense was carried from its production centre at Qana (now known as Bir Ali) to Gaza in Egypt. The camel caravans also carried gold and other precious goods, which arrived in Qana by sea from India.

    History
People have been setting up shacks in the area known as Yemen for more than 3000 years. Ancient kingdoms earned their cash by selling scented tree resins known as myrrh and frankincense to the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Various states rose and fell along the trade routes; mightiest among them was Saba, which hung around for 14 centuries from 1000BC, and based its huge agricultural wealth around the famous dam of Ma'rib. When, in the 1st century AD, the Greeks and Romans discovered they could travel to and from India by boat, Yemen's ports made a killing, eclipsing the towns which had grown up along land trade routes. In 395 the Holy Roman Emperor Theodisius made Christianity the new state religion, effectively putting an end to the demand for frankincense and sending the Sabean kingdom into an irreversable decline. By 575 the Persians had waltzed in and were lords of all they surveyed. In the 7th century the Persian governor of Yemen converted to Islam - like good subjects, the rest of the population soon followed, and by mid-century the Yemenis had knocked up a mosque or three. As the centre of Islamic power moved from the Arabian Peninsula to the Persian Gulf, Yemen was left more or less to its own devices, and a number of short-lived dynastic kingdoms sprang up. The Zaydi dynasty, a strict Islamic state founded in 897 in the north of the country, survived until Yemen's 1962 revolution. The Kathirids, who took power in the south in the 15th century, lasted until 1967.

YEMEN The ancient kingdom of Sheba, and its port of Aden, occupied a strategic location on the Arabian peninsula, allowing it to have dominated the trade routes that passed from Africa through the Middle East to India and back again. Islam came early to the region and in the 10th century, the Zaidi sect gave Yemen its kings (and, concurrently, its religious leaders). The Zaidis ruled until 1962. But control over Aden was disputed by many peoples including the Portuguese, the Ottomans, and the British. Britain made Aden a crown colony in 1839, with portions of the country becoming a protectorate. The Ottomans exerted control over the region twice: from the mid-16th to the mid-17th centuries and from 1849 to 1918; they were expelled only at the conclusion of World War I and Yemen became independent in 1918. All did not go smoothly, however, as conflict arose with the Saudis, who invaded in 1934, and with Britain in 1954 over Aden. The throne was challenged in 1955 and when the imam died in 1962, the country was divided into North and South. Shortly thereafter, Aden and the protectorate began agitating for independence. South Yemen declared independence in 1967. Its leftist regime was socialist in nature. The North, civil war continued between royalist and republican elements until 1970. Clashes between north and south occurred in the early '70s and in 1979, full-scale war was launched by the South. North and South were reunited in 1990.

Introduction [Top of Page] Background: North Yemen became independent of the Ottoman Empire in 1918. The British, who had set up a protectorate area around the southern port of Aden in the 19th century, withdrew in 1967 from what became South Yemen. Three years later, the southern government adopted a Marxist orientation. The massive exodus of hundreds of thousands of Yemenis from the south to the north contributed to two decades of hostility between the states. The two countries were formally unified as the Republic of Yemen in 1990. A southern secessionist movement in 1994 was quickly subdued. The earliest recorded civilizations of S Arabia were the Minaean and Sabaean. The Sabaean kingdom (see Sheba ) flourished from c.750 B.C. to c.115 B.C. , with Marib (located east of Sana) the capital after c.600 B.C. Sabaean society was highly developed technically, as witnessed by the remains of a great dam at Marib that was the center of a large irrigation system. The Himyarites, who followed the Sabaeans, were invaded by the Romans (1st cent. B.C. ) and were occupied by the Ethiopians (c. A.D. A.D. After the breakup of the caliphate, Yemen came under the control of the rising Rassite dynasty, imams of the Zaidi sect who built the theocratic political structure of Yemen that lasted until 1962. The Fatamid caliphs of Egypt occupied most of Yemen from c.1000 until c.1175, when it fell to the Ayyubids, who ruled until c.1250. By 1520, Yemen formed part of the Ottoman Empire, which exercised at least nominal sovereignty until the end of World War I. A turbulent wave of Wahhabism, a puritanical sect of Islam, swept across the Arabian peninsula at the opening of the 19th cent. and drove out the Zaidi imams. Ibrahim Pasha of Egypt, acting in the name of the Ottoman sultan, drove out the Wahhabis in 1818, and the Egyptians remained until 1840. The Ottoman Turks then replaced the Egyptians, giving the imam full autonomy in the interior.

    Yemen History and Government
History To the Romans, Yemen was Arabia Felix , whose mountains and fertile areas distinguished it from the barren desert of the rest of the Arabian peninsula. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Yemen came into the 7th century under the influence of Islam, which was then rapidly expanding throughout the region. It remained within the orbit of various regional powers until, in the 15th century, it became a flashpoint in the struggle between the Egyptians and the Ottoman Empire. Its strategic location subsequently attracted European powers and, during the early 17th and early 19th centuries, there was a constant struggle for control between the Europeans and the Ottomans. The development of trade routes to India and the Far East eventually made protection of the Suez sea route an imperative for the British, who occupied the port of Aden in 1839, as a staging post and military base. The Yemeni hinterland was, for the most part, under the loose control of the Ottoman Empire throughout the 19th century, until 1918, when the Imam Yahya took power in what became the Yemen Arab Republic (YAR). Aden and its surroundings meanwhile, were firmly established as a British colony. Yahya was assassinated in 1948 and his son Ahmed took over. From 1958-1961, the YAR was federated with Egypt and Syria in the United Arab States. Ahmed died in 1962 and an army coup led to civil war between Egypt-backed republicans and Saudi-backed royalists.

Between the 12th century BC and the 6th century AD it was part of the Minaean Sabaean and Himyarite kingdoms which controlled the lucrative spice trade and later came under Ethiopian and Persian rule. In the 7th century Islamic caliphs began to exert control over the area. After this caliphate broke up the former north Yemen came under control of Imams of various dynasties usually of the Zaidi sect who established a theocratic political structure that survived until modern times. (Imam is a religious term. The Shiites apply it to the prophet Muhammad's son-in-law Ali his sons Hasan and Hussein and subsequent lineal descendants whom they consider to have been divinely ordained unclassified successors of the prophet.) Egyptian Sunni caliphs occupied much of north Yemen throughout the 11th century. By the 16th century and again in the 19th century north Yemen was part of the Ottoman empire and in some periods its Imams exerted suzerainty over south Yemen.

After the Ottoman evacuation (1918), Imam Yahya moved to expand Yemen's territory, but his only gain was the port and surrounding area of Hodeida. In 1934, after a brief Saudi Arabian invasion and skirmishes with Great Britain (which had the protectorate of Aden), Yemen's boundaries were fixed by treaty with Saudi Arabia and Great Britain. However, clashes on the Aden border continued sporadically. Modifying its traditional policy of isolation, Yemen became more active in foreign affairs after World War II; it joined the Arab League in 1945 and the United Nations in 1947 and established diplomatic relations with other nations. However, the imam, as both king and spiritual leader, continued to rule along theocratic lines.

While the borders of most Middle East states were defined by colonial powers after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, a single Yemeni state was not formed until 1990.
