42 - October 15, 2001 thru 21 October, 2001, Vol XI Yemen, Jewel of Arabia (Book Review)
Reviewed by Karen Dabrowska

In the introduction, Mark Marshall, a former British ambassador to Yemen provides a brief historical resume for the general reader. He concludes that the authorities in the Yemen Arab Republic held that in Yemen unity was impossible without democracy but that any attempt to break up the union would also amount to an attempt to impose at least partial dictatorship. When the ex-leaders of the Peoples Democratic Yemen Republic, having lost the election, tried to recreate their ex state, their failure to do so was at least in part due to popular revulsion at the idea of losing the two values, unity and democracy. That the Republic of Yemen survived this rude test in its infancy, is why today as in the mythical days of Qahtah and so rarely since, the land of Yemen is once again united under Yemeni rule.
The introduction is followed by a chronology stretching from 5000 BC to the present day - the final entry reading: 2000 northern border agreed with Saudi Arabia.
The book is divided into three sections: The Highlands, the Tihama and the Hadramaut, the south coast and Aden. Sadly, the authors neglect Socotra, a pictorial gem and do not do justice to the old city of Sana'a with its numerous markets and colorful characters. The photographs of the scenery, especially the mountains in the north and the harbor of Aden are as breathtaking as the subject matter but there is little empathy for the people: the book is a book which delights in scenery and buildings rather than the country's inhabitants.

10 - March 8th thru March 14th 1999, Vol IX A Wanderer Artist and a Yafiee Song Legend Rediscovering Yafiee Songs Through Yahya Omer Al-Yafiee Yafiee type is an original Yemeni traditional art the first classical generation of singers had performed. That was on the first quarter of the 20th century when the artist Yahya Omer Al Yafiee founded this type which were highly appreciated by audience and became well known among other traditional types in Yemen and the Arab Peninsula . The following are some features of this art and its pioneer, the poet Yahya Omer Al Yafiee, famous with the song " Abu Maajeb"
The poet is considered one of the most ancient artists in the Yemeni contemporary song poets. Living in the 11th Hijri century in India, same as the artist Sultan Bin Herhara, both played a major role in developing and spreading Yemeni and Gulf songs. His Life
Living a life full of searching and exploring, a continuos travel starting from Yemen heading towards India, Baroda, Kelketa and Haiderabad, that could explain the use of some vocabularies as “Ya merkeb Al Hind abu dejlin”.
Yafiee songs have special style that reflects the softness of his music and voice, the strength of his words. These factors helped in wide spread Yemeni songs in the Indian Continent and the Arab Gulf. It’s quite obvious that there are many similarities in the musical common tradition of Yemen and the Gulf. Original Yemeni music chants us here in Yemen and they have the same influence on those in the Gulf as “Aghtenim zamanek” and “Ya men alal arsh aatelate” and many other songs.

The Persian Gulf
By Kevin Filan Yemen Bahrain Kuwait Oman Qatar ... Yemen There are an estimated 18 million people and 60 million firearms within the borders of Yemen; many of those are automatic weapons brought back by Yemeni muhajjadeen who fought against the Soviets during their occupation of Afghanistan. After September 11, Yemen found itself the center of some uncomfortable attention, thanks to one of its most notorious sons: Osama Bin Laden's mother is Yemenite. Like Afghanistan and Lebanon, Yemen has been wracked by decades of brutal and bloody civil war. Once home to some of the mightiest city-states of the ancient world, today Yemen struggles to rise from the ashes and awaken from a long historical nightmare.
In the 19th century Yemen would meet yet another occupier; the British. By 1839 the British commanded the southern port city of Aden, while the Ottoman Empire reoccupied northern Yemen in 1849. For the next fifty years each would strive to expand their influence, until ultimately a dividing line was drawn between "North Yemen" and "South Yemen." By 1918 the Ottomans had been forced out of Yemen by Zaidi forces: the British would remain in South Yemen until 1967, when they were driven out by the Marxist National Liberation Front.
Alas, liberation did not lead to stability. The Imans of North Yemen had presided over an isolationist kingdom which had little contact with the modern world; the Marxists of South Yemen, on the other hand, actively sought ties with the Soviet Union. Soon North Yemen was caught up in its own civil war, with pro-modernism forces ruling the cities and devoutly religious pro-Iman forces ruling the countryside, while South Yemen faced coups and revolutions in 1969, 1978 and 1986… not to mention border wars with North Yemen forces in 1972 and 1979. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, and a corresponding collapse in subsidies for South Yemen's Marxist government, there was a greater incentive toward unification: on May 22, 1990 North and South Yemen merged to become the Republic of Yemen. By the summer of 1990 foreign aid and rising oil revenues made it look like Yemen might actually achieve some degree of stability.
