In these two places, Qat is just one name given to a green leafy plant that is cultivated there. When chewed, the leaves of this plant release two substances that produce a hypnotic, reverential "high," distinctive in the thoughtful state it induces. Kevin Rushby discovered that the use of Qat is a way of life since it plays a pivotal role in all facets of the... A History of Modern Yemen by Paul Dresch (Author) Book Description Yemen's modern history is unique and deserves to be better understood. While the borders of most Middle East states were defined by colonial powers after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, a single Yemeni state was not formed until 1990. In fact, much of Yemen's twentieth-century history was taken up constructing such a state, forged after years of civil war. The book is augmented by illustrations, maps and a detailed chronology.

The Jews immigrated to Yemen in the 6th century BC and their community remained isolated for a very long time. That is why theirs is no doubt the most ancient and purest of all the Jewish traditions. Traditional Music of the North The marriage songs, the percussion instruments of the Chargui dances, the repetitive and hypnotic melodies of the Qasaba flutes all stir our imagination. var static_ko="19641"; var static_section="-459"; var static_langue="en"; Culture Sector Division of Cultural Heritage Mission Programme Who´s who? Flag of Yemen Background:
North Yemen became independent of the Ottoman Empire in 1918. The British, who had set up a protectorate area around the southern port of Aden in the 19th century, withdrew in 1967 from what became South Yemen. Three years later, the southern government adopted a Marxist orientation. The massive exodus of hundreds of thousands of Yemenis from the south to the north contributed to two decades of hostility between the states. The two countries were formally unified as the Republic of Yemen in 1990. A southern secessionist movement in 1994 was quickly subdued. In 2000, Saudi Arabia and Yemen agreed to a delimitation of their border.

"Yemen. The Land of the Queen of Sheba" The exhibition is dedicated to the culture of Yemen and covers the period from prehistoric times to the 6th century AD. For a period of approximately 10,000 years, the land of Yemen united the cultures that developed in the ancient Near East. It was there that hunting was gradually replaced by stock-raising and agriculture, so that prehistoric man was settled, and the first irrigation systems were created, thus allowing for the foundation of settlements, now revealed by the extensive cemeteries, a source of information for an era that still remains in the dark. In the 2nd millennium BC, ancient Yemen, under the influence of the rest of Near East, underwent serious cultural and demographic changes. New populations settled in this part of Arabia, who founded the civilization of Western Arabia.
The Hellenic Ministry of Culture participates with an exhibit of the Archaeological Museum of Delos, which bears a bilingual inscription in the Greek and Arabic language.
