Y2K bomb plot accomplice sentenced to 24 years in jail
Mokhtar Haouari was found guilty in a federal court in Manhattan last July. By Phil Hirschkorn and Deborah Feyerick CNN New York Bureau NEW YORK (CNN) An accomplice to the al Qaeda-trained terrorist who plotted to bomb Los Angeles International Airport around New Year's 2000 was sentenced Wednesday to 24 years in prison. The sentence handed down in Manhattan federal court for Mokhtar Haouari, an Algerian-born Montreal shopkeeper, was close to the maximum allowed by law. Haouari was found guilty last July of conspiring to provide material support to a terrorist act for helping fellow Algerian national Ahmed Ressam, in a plan to detonate a suitcase bomb at LAX. "I am sentencing at the higher end of the guideline range because the defendant's conduct here created a grave risk to the well being and safety of the American people," said U.S. District Judge John Keenan in handing down the sentence.

Alleged Y2K bomb plot accomplice on trial
NEW YORK (CNN) Jury selection began Monday in the federal trial of an Algerian national accused of being involved in a foiled Y2K bomb plot. Mokhtar Haouari is charged with providing material support to a terrorist enterprise. Jury selection is scheduled to resume Tuesday. The trial is expected to last two weeks. "He's passionate in his denial of being a terrorist," said defense attorney Daniel Ollen. The bomb plot unraveled when Ahmed Ressam, 34, from Algeria, was caught in December 1999 while crossing the Canadian border into Washington state with a trunk filled with explosives and timing devices. In April, a jury found Ressam guilty after a month-long federal trial in Los Angeles. Y2K bomb plotter still talking; sentence delayed
Ressam testifies last July against Haourari, the man who provided his false driver' license and cash. From Phil Hirschkorn CNN New York Bureau NEW YORK (CNN) The sentencing of convicted so-called millennium bomb plotter Ahmed Ressam has been postponed again, this time nearly for a year, until March 13, 2003. Ressam's sentencing originally was scheduled for last September 20, and most recently for last Friday, March 29. But the government requested continuances, citing Ressam's continued cooperation with the government on terrorism cases, according to Ressam's attorney, Tom Hillier, a federal public defender in Seattle. U.S. District Judge John Coughenour granted the request. After his conviction last April in a month-long federal jury trial in Los Angeles, California, Ressam agreed to cooperate with U.S. prosecutors and investigators.

Terrorist: Y2K defendant wasn't told plot details
Ressam says he was not committed solely to bombing Los Angeles International Airport. By Phil Hirschkorn CNN New York Bureau NEW YORK (CNN) Convicted Algerian terrorist Ahmed Ressam testified Friday that Mokhtar Haouari, on trial for allegedly aiding Ressam's foiled plot to detonate a bomb at Los Angeles International Airport, was not told the details of the plan. The government rested its case later in the day. The defense did not call any witnesses. Closing arguments will be Wednesday. Ressam, 34, was the government's star witness against Haouari, 32, a fellow Algerian who is accused of giving Ressam cash and fake identification for his attempt to sneak into the United States on December 14, 1999. Ressam met Haouari, a Montreal shopkeeper, after illegally immigrating to Canada in 1994. Ressam said they engaged in counterfeit check schemes, sold IDs stolen from tourists, and planned to open a grocery store to further credit card fraud. RESOURCES Message Board Besides charges of supporting a terrorist enterprise, Haouari is being tried for financial and document fraud.

Boyhood friend fingers defendant in Y2K bomb plot
Haouari, a Montreal shopkeeper, is charged with multiple counts of aiding a terrorist plot and fraud. By Phil Hirschkorn CNN Producer NEW YORK (CNN) A government witness told a jury Thursday that Mokhtar Haouari sent him to Seattle to help in a New Year's 2000 bomb plot. Abdel Ghani Meskini is testifying against Haouari, who is accused of providing material support to a terrorist enterprise, namely the foiled plot that prosecutors allege targeted Los Angeles International Airport. The plot unraveled when U.S. border patrol guards caught Ahmed Ressam driving a rented Chrysler across the Canadian border into Washington state. His trunk contained explosive materials and timing devices. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Bianco has said Ressam, who was convicted in an April trial in Los Angeles, will tell them he planned to detonate a suitcase bomb outside an LAX terminal. LEGAL RESOURCES Latest Legal News Law Library FindLaw Consumer Center Select a topic Bankruptcy Discrimination Divorce Estate Planning Landlord-Tenant Personal Injury Taxes Meskini, whose Brooklyn phone number was found on a scrap of paper in Ressam's car, was originally Haouari's codefendant. Closing arguments made in Y2K plot trial
Haouari By Phil Hirschkorn CNN Producer NEW YORK (CNN) Federal prosecutors asked a jury Wednesday to convict an Algerian man of terrorism conspiracy charges for aiding a plot to bomb Los Angeles International Airport around New Year's 2000, while the defendant's attorney asked the jury acquit their client. The jury heard closing arguments in the case against Mokhtar Haouari, 32, a Montreal shopkeeper accused of assisting Ahmed Ressam in his effort to detonate a suitcase bomb at the airport. After the closing arguments, U.S. District Judge John Keenan completed his jury instructions and told the jurors to begin their deliberations Thursday morning. Ressam, 34, also from Algeria, was stopped on December 14, 1999, driving across the U.S.-Canadian border with a trunk full of explosives and timing devices. He was convicted in April and is now cooperating with the government to reduce his prison time. However, during his testimony Ressam said he never disclosed his plans to Haouari or anyone else "for security reasons." MORE STORIES Training camp links millennium, embassy bombers

Jury seeks clarification in Y2K plot trial
Haouari By Phil Hirschkorn CNN Producer NEW YORK (CNN) A federal jury of nine women and three men has asked the judge to clarify the central question as it deliberates the case against Mokhtar Haouari, an Algerian-born Montreal shopkeeper who is accused of aiding a plot to bomb Los Angeles International Airport around New Year's 2000. Hours after beginning its deliberations Thursday morning, the jury sent a note asking U.S. District Court Judge John Keenan what direct knowledge of terrorism is required to find Haouari guilty. Haouari, 32, is charged with two counts of assisting fellow Algerian national Ahmed Ressam, 34, in a plan to detonate a suitcase bomb at the Los Angeles airport. Ressam, who testified as a government witness in a deal to shorten the jail sentence from his April conviction, said he never explicitly told Haouari the purpose of his trip to the United States, but described it as "important and dangerous business." London-based Algerian charged in Y2K bomb plot
Prosecutors say Ressam, seated, shown testifying in last month's trial against Mokhtar Haouari, called Abu Doha 11 days before his arrest. By Phil Hirschkorn CNN Producer NEW YORK (CNN) Federal prosecutors in the United States have charged an Algerian man identified in a just-completed trial and in court documents as a terrorist cell leader based in London. British police arrested the man, Haydar Abu Doha, 36, on a U.S. warrant charging him with conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction for an alleged role backing the foiled plot to bomb Los Angeles International Airport around New Year's 2000. Attempted millennium bomber Ahmed Ressam the claimed lone executor of that plot has named Abu Doha as a gatekeeper to Islamic militant training camps in Afghanistan, where Ressam testified he underwent months of firearms and explosives training in 1998. Y2K The Constitution, Martial Law; Dictatorship Y2K will reveal whether the United States Republic was fatally flawed from the very beginning. Y2K will reveal whether the stress of chaos, combined with the lethargy of the people, the corruption of the elite and the generalized "squalor of our age" as the liberal Anthony Lewis put it, will be enough. Enough to end the grand experiment in liberty. Enough to end the journey towards liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Enough to extinguish the lighthouse of liberty and replace it with the energizer bunny battery powered version. Read Larry Sanger's excellent editorial "Y2K in our Decadent Age" for some insight into why Y2K has the potential to take our whole social system down. I believe it was the Frenchman Alex de Toquettle? "Democracy in America" that makes the claim-paraphrasing here-If things get bad, the Americans will tear themselves apart. The founding father's understood that government was not the benevolent nanny of our modern age-Big Mommy instead of Big Brother. They sought to base a government upon the self discipline, moral character and local control of the people. They sought to base the economy upon the time honored truths of gold and silver backed currency. They specifically forbid a standing, professional military, excessive foreign entanglements, a central bank and a large centralized federal government. In other words, the exact opposite of what the United States enters Y2K with. For all intents and purposes, the United States has suffered a constitutional coup de etat and the populace is too ignorant to understand what happened.
