You've learned some HTML, and maybe you've created your own Web page and before you've time to celebrate your accomplishments, you hear about XML, short for eXtensible Markup Language. And you've got questions.
What's XML all about? Do Web authors really need to learn XML? Is XML difficult? What the heck is XML for, anyway?
You've got questions and this book has the answers. Here's the short version: XML enables Web authors to create their own, novel tags, which can be used to capture the nuances of information in Web pages. And what's more, XML-capable browsers can detect the underlying logic of these tags, and display the tagged information beautifully using style sheet languages such as CSS or XSL. In short, XML explodes all the restrictions HTML imposes, and gives you, the Web author, almost unlimited freedom to express your data. That's why Internet experts agree that XML will play an increasingly important role in Web publishing and may soon displace HTML as the best possible medium for authoring Web pages.

Cocoon 2 Programming: Web Publishing with XML and Java > Customer Review #1: Too little too late

Six months ago, as no Cocoon book existed yet, this thin volume could have been interesting, but with the release of Moczar and Aston it is simply not worth the money anymore. It is often rather superficial and is packed with questionnable fillers   la Wrox: one really wonders why the authors and the publisher felt compelled to include useless introductions to css, xhtml and xsl (and more) in a book on cocoon!
Cocoon 2 Programming: Web Publishing with XML and Java > Customer Review #2: Desperately seeking editing Cocoon 2 Programming: Web Publishing with XML and Java > Customer Review #3: Dissapointing When I originally saw this book, I was intrigued by an alternative way of presenting this fairly complicated material and the seemingly relevant examples. I felt that it was generally incomplete and scattered.

Now that you have created and published the RSS file for your own Web site, you are ready to let the world know about your exciting new offering. While the good old methods of word of mouth and email signatures still work wonders, the most promising approach is to register your RSS file with one of the news sites.
Overview
Similar to Web directories news sites offer listings of RSS channels, grouped into subject matters. Such services, in no particular order, are: Site Type Primary Goal Submission Webtop Drive traffic to own site Automated UserLand Aggregator Syndicate channels to other Web sites Automated Moreover.com Aggregator Syndicate channels to other Web sites Email xmlTree Directory Drive traffic to own site Automated Although these sites all distribute news channels, their intentions and services vary widely. Moreover.com selects its source channels manually, but offers a wide array of possibilities for content syndication. Web masters can easily add news channels to their own sites by stepping through a wizard on the MoreOver Web site, selecting the desired channels and their visual appearance, and subsequently have the code mailed to them for inclusion on their site. Developers can integrate content in various formats, including JavaScript, XML, WAP, and WDDX.

72. Learn To Program HTML In 21 Minutes
about the structure of the information you are publishing first to the formatting of the final HTML or xml that you generate and ship to users over the web.
http://philip.greenspun.com/panda/html
Chapter 5: Learn to Program HTML in 21 Minutes
by Philip Greenspun , part of Philip and Alex's Guide to Web Publishing
Revised June 2003 Hardcopy featured a 10-year-old boy one night back in the mid-1990s. His psychotic mother wouldn't take her meds and was beating him up. He wanted to live with his father but the judge wouldn't change his custody arrangement. So the 10-year-old kid built a Web site to encourage Internetters to contact the judge in support of a change in custody. If you think that you need professional help to build a static HTML Web site, tell yourself "The abused 10-year-old got his site to work; I think I can, too."
You May Already Have Won $1 Million
Then again, maybe not. But at least you already know how to write legal HTML: My Samoyed is really hairy. Suppose you want something more expressive. You want the word really to be in italic type: really: Most browsers use italics to emphasize, but some use boldface and browsers for ancient ASCII terminals (e.g., Lynx) have to ignore this tag or come up with a clever rendering method. A picky user with the right browser program can even customize the rendering of particular tags. There are a few dozen more tags in HTML. You can learn them by choosing View Source from a Web browser when visiting sites whose formatting you admire. You can also work through a comprehensive HTML guide, e.g.

Web Publishing with XML Part I: Defining the definitions Wes Biggs
Online media conferences are rife with talk of XML . Industry pundits proclaim how well it slices, dices and tenderizes your cherished Web sites. The term adorns headlines in all the weekly rags on the boss's desk, but no one can figure out how to translate the gloss into something of substance for your online presence. It seems to be everything to everyone but what is it? In this series, we'll take a look at some practical applications of XML-based technologies that have the potential, if executed correctly, to simplify the process of bringing content online. We'll put some meat on the fairy tale of hype surrounding the buzzword and explore what kinds of problems XML can and can't solve for web-savvy publications. Like most tales, this one needs exposition before the adventure begins. XML is more accurately described as a set of building blocks rather than a tool. To understand its applications and come up with your own it's worth taking a close-up look at the details. So, bear with me as we take a whirlwind tour of the nuts and bolts of XML. THE BASICS If you've worked with Web technologies at all, you probably have a decent conception of HTML, the HyperText Markup Language. HTML is the standard document language spoken by Web browsers. It's called 'markup' because, just as a proofreader marks up a story, a Web editor sprinkles additional clues amid the plain text of a web page in an attempt to specify the way the browser software should display the information. XML, which stands for eXtensible Markup Language (because, let's face it, 'EML' is just not as cool), retains the same basic structure. The markup, in both HTML and XML, consists of structured tags, distinguished from the actual text of a document by the judicious use of angle brackets (less-than and greater-than signs, for the mathematically inclined).
