    About Runtime
The next generation of open-source web applications will be based on Java and XML. Because Java can run in any operating system, there is a huge pool of developers building new web technologies with it. This means that the rate of technological growth is astonishing, with new developments and standards constantly emerging. XML is fuelling this growth by making data as portable as code, and previously seperate systems are becoming increasingly easy to integrate through common XML standards. Java and XML are now maturing as particular technologies stabilise and become more reliable, and standards gain industry momentum. Here at Runtime we have been using, researching, and teaching Java as individuals for many years; and we are now starting to use it as a commercial development environment. This document summarises some of the core technologies that the open-source community should be aware of. Joe Faith , September 2000

AxKit: XML Web Publishing with Apache and mod_perl
by Matt Sergeant May 24, 2000
    Introduction
Table of Contents Introduction Overview How AxKit Works Mapping XML Files to Style Sheets ... Conclusion One of XML's major benefits to web developers is that it is a standard way to separate data from presentation, and create a consistent templating system for a web site. Yet that promise is yet to be fully realized by many, due to the immature state of XML tool support, especially in authoring. An important part of using XML for web publishing is content delivery . Although XML-to-HTML conversion is partially possible in browsers such as Internet Explorer, the reality is that HTML or XHTML will be served from web servers for a long time to come. This means server-side XML transformation is the most viable option for publishing with XML today.

XML Web Publishing Framework Posted on Monday April 17, @02:55PM Pacific Cocoon is a powerful framework for XML web publishing which brings a whole new world of abstraction and ease to consolidated web site creation and management based on the XML paradigm and related technologies. Cocoon is a 100% pure Java publishing framework that relies on new W3C technologies (such as DOM, XML, and XSL) to provide web content. A good introduction to Cocoon can be found in the yet to be released O'Reilly book "Java and XML" see Chapter 9- Web-Publishing Frameworks

A framework of this sort cuts down a lot of time/money that would have to be spent custom developing or buying the same thing. After getting the infrastructure (buying, downloading, developing, etc.) in place the next step is to make the applications that will drive the website.

    Selecting a Framework

    What's Next?

This chapter begins our look at specific Java and XML topics. So far, we have covered the basics of using XML from Java, looking at the SAX and DOM APIs to manipulate XML and the fundamentals of using and creating XML itself. We've also looked at how JDOM can provide a more Java-centric means of using our XML data and documents within Java programs. Now that you have a grasp on using XML from your code, we will spend time on specific applications. The next six chapters represent the most significant applications of XML, and, in particular, how those applications are implemented in the Java space. While there are literally hundreds and soon to be thousands of important applications of XML, the topics in these chapters are those that continually seem to be in the spotlight, and that have a significant potential to change the way traditional development processes occur. We begin our look at these hot topics with the one XML application that seems to have generated the largest amount of excitement in the XML and Java communities: the web publishing framework. Although we have continually emphasized that generating presentation from content is perhaps over-hyped when compared to the value of the portable data that XML provides, using XML for presentation styling is still very important. This importance increases when looking at web-based applications.

Atom as the New XML-Based Web Publishing and Syndication Format. Update 2004-05-05: On May 05, 2004 the Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG) announced the proposal for a new IETF Atom Publishing Format and Protocol Working Group within the IETF Applications Area. See details in the news item "IESG Announces Proposal for IETF Atom Publishing Format and Protocol Working Group." The Atom Project, to the extent that anyone can declare authoritatively what it is , or is quintessentially meant to support , is "an initiative to develop a common syntax for syndication, archiving, and publishing." Sam Ruby (Emerging Technologies Group, IBM) is most often credited for originating the core ideas, and design work spread across several wikis and weblog Internet sites is now being shared by some of the brightest developer minds focused upon the future of Web content creation and distribution. The developers agree that Atom "will be vendor neutral, implemented by everybody, freely extensible by anybody, and cleanly and thoroughly specified." Atom is sometimes characterized as the successor to RSS (

XML was brand new, having just been approved as a recommendation by the W3C. Designers were curious about the language and, more specifically, about whether it would ever replace HTML. Because it turned out the answer was "no, XML serves different needs than HTML," they happily abandoned XML to programmers. Five years later, there's a better understanding of XML and its capabilities. This leads to renewed interest in XML for Web publishing. Unfortunately, there's still a lot of confusion on how to effectively apply XML for Web publishing.
