Industrial Technology Education
• Is becoming more important for everyone to understand because of our technical society • Influences our work, the products that we use, even our recreational activities • Needs to be studied so everyone can understand it, use technological products wisely, and help shape the future direction of our society
As an technical educator, you will
• Gain a broad understanding of technological systems in the areas of communication, manufacturing, construction, transportation, and power and energy production • Develop knowledge and skill in working with technological tools and processes in each of these activity areas • Learn how to turn your knowledge of industrial and technical systems into curriculum for the classroom
Program Requirements
Industrial Technology Program Checksheet (PDF format) The requirements to obtain the bachelor of science degree in industrial technology education include studies in both professional education courses, and industrial technology specialization. The professional sequence of courses in education is designed to provide a balance between theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the classroom. You will learn about teaching strategies, curriculum development and the history of education, and then through practical experience, have an opportunity to put this knowledge to use in the classroom.
Technical Specialization
The technical specialization area includes study in the areas of welding, manufacturing, construction, woodworking, drafting and computer-aided design, graphic design, electronics, and energy and power technology. In addition, students select from one or more areas of concentration depending upon their interest. These concentrations provide for more focused study in the areas of automotives, multi-media communications, drafting, electronics, machining, welding or woodworking.

School Library Media Centers: Current and Future Statistics
Mary Jo Lynch, Director, Office for Research and Statistics, American Library Association.
Who are you? Where do you, your program, your library media center, and your state's programs and facilities fit within the national picture? You have the answers to some of those questions, of course, but you need national data to determine your place in the overall school library media tableau. In this column, ALA's lead researcher first summarizes the national data that sketch the most recent portrayal of our field and then sets the scene for an even more detailed portrait to come.
The final report of the 1985-86 project was an impressive compendium of data prepared for what was then the Center for Education Statistics in the Department of Education.(1) The body of the report includes approximately 117 tables in three groups. Thirty-nine tables describe public school library media centers along a number of dimensions: staff, collection, expenditures, services, usage, technology, and facilities. Thirty-nine other tables provide the same information for private schools. Thirty-nine additional tables show estimates by state for public schools on the same variables. The report also includes a lengthy introduction with fifteen figures and twenty-two tables, some of them comparing 1985-86 data with data from surveys in 1958, 1962, 1974, and 1978-79.

Box 8002 Afton, WY 83110 Contact Alan Allred, Principal Phone: (307) 885-8002 E-mail: aallred@silverstar.com Description Afton Elementary is a small, rural school with a big reputation. A K-6, targeted assistance Title I school with fewer than 400 students, Afton is known within the state for taking risks and piloting new programs. And for getting amazing results. During the 1993-1994 school year, Afton was part of a districtwide audit conducted by Idaho State University. The audit showed that students were doing well in math, but lagging behind in reading. As a result, raising the reading performance of all students became the main school reform goal at Afton. The solutions came from research. According to Principal Alan Allred, "We don't do anything that isn't research-based." Beginning with the question, "What can we do differently to help our students?" Allred and his staff studied a variety of interventions over a two-year period, and came up with several different, but connected, strategies.

    Challenging Protectionist Restraints on
Direct Interstate Wine Shipments to Consumers When the framers created the U.S. Constitution, one of their primary goals was to eradicate parochial restrictions that impeded free trade among the states. The Constitution created a free national market, in which states were no longer permitted to erect protectionist trade barriers to the detriment of consumers in their own states and producers of other states. The mechanism that was designed to ensure against such trade barriers was the Interstate Commerce Clause in Article I, section 8. More than 200 years later, some of those barriers are still with us, throttling free trade of a product enjoyed by millions of Americans: wine. For the economic benefit of liquor wholesalers who control the distribution and sale of alcohol, 30 states have laws prohibiting the direct shipment of wine from out-of-state wineries to consumers. The issue has major Internet ramifications.
