A special project of the Wyoming State Historical Society is participation in the Western Trails Project Officially known as " Western Trails: Museum/Library Collaborative in Western States ," the project originated from the Institute of Museum and Library Services , an independent Federal grant-making agency dedicated to creating and sustaining a nation of learners. The multi-state two-year project administered by the University of Denver will "aid in the creation of digital copies of source materials related to the historic western migration of the U.S. population, whether on foot, by horse-drawn conveyance, by rail, or by highway."
This project proposes to bring together several Western states in a collaborative digitization project. The project will include a mixture of archives, historical societies, libraries and museums from Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming. These four states share common borders, common heritage and common customs. The Wyoming State Library is the lead institution for Wyoming, and several other Wyoming libraries, museums, and other historically oriented institutions, including the Wyoming State Historical Society, are participating.

    Three-month FirstSearch Trial
    Announced for Wyoming Libraries
Libraries in Wyoming are getting the opportunity to learn more about the OCLC FirstSearch Service, and at no cost to them. Wyoming State Librarian Helen Meadors, BCR's Jim Hensinger and OCLC's Teresa Mullins announced a Wyoming FirstSearch trial at the Wyoming Library Association annual conference in September. Besides information on the FirstSearch trial, the joint announcement provided Wyoming librarians with a demonstration on searching the various FirstSearch databases. Mullins and Hensinger also provided a free, four-hour FirstSearch training session at WLA, a session sponsored by the Wyoming State Library. The Wyoming FirstSearch trial began October 1 and will continue through December 31. Participating libraries have access to all FirstSearch databases during the trial period. That's access to 60-plus databases, including full text. The trial period will introduce both librarians and the public to FirstSearch and the sources on it, said Venice Beske, manager of statewide information services at the Wyoming State Library, who is coordinating the FirstSearch trial. "We want to get an idea whether this is something our libraries and the public feel we should try to make available permanently," she explained. OCLC is tracking usage of FirstSearch itself and of the various databases being accessed. When the trial is over both the state library and individual libraries will evaluate those statistics. If libraries' use of FirstSearch and certain databases warrant, the state library will look for funding, she said.

The Wyoming Library Association (WLA) met in Casper, Wyoming September 18-21. There were many well-attended programs. Over all there were 304 registered, a large number by comparison to past WLA conventions. Wyoming Library Leadership Institute
Library Leadership Institute (LLI) provides an opportunity for librarians and others associated with libraries to learn about leadership potential. The program was developed because there was a recognized need to cultivate library leaders, which prompted the Wyoming State Library (WSL) to seek funding for the institute. In early 2001, the State Library received a two-year McMurray Library Endowment grant to create a leadership institute with the goal of developing leaders within the library community. Through a competitive application process, sixteen individuals were selected for the first institute. Those attendees represented a cross section of employees including paraprofessionals, directors, support staff, library media specialists and special librarians. Topics for the institute included a personality inventory, leadership skill building, teambuilding principles, communication skills, leadership and decision-making styles and conflict exploration.
