65. BLM Wyoming Historic Trails
In wyoming, 60% (over 340 miles) of the Oregon, California, Mormon Pioneer and Pony Express Learn more about the historic trails by visiting our interactive map
http://www.wy.blm.gov/historictrails/
Updated June 1, 2004
During the 1800's , the area now known as Wyoming became the focus for western expansion. The discovery of the South Pass route over the Rocky Mountains was the primary reason for the location of the Oregon, Mormon Pioneer, California, and Pony Express Historic Trails in Wyoming. BLM-administered public lands in Wyoming are one of the few remaining locations where these national historic trails can be experienced in a setting relatively unchanged from the 1800's. In Wyoming, 60% (over 340 miles) of the Oregon, California, Mormon Pioneer and Pony Express Trails are under BLM stewardship. Learn more about the historic trails by visiting our interactive map In 1986, an historic trails management plan was prepared to guide BLM management of the Oregon-California-Mormon Pioneer-Pony Express Trail and cutoffs. Since that time, interest in the historic trails and visitor use has steadily increased. BLM Wyoming is considering updating or revising the management plan to address overall management of all the historic trails in Wyoming. Wyoming's prominence in both the history and current management of these trails made it the logical choice as the home of an interpretive center dedicated to this important chapter of American history.

Federal Lands and Indian Reservations
Printable Maps
The Federal Government owns nearly 650 million acres of land - almost 30 percent of the land area of the United States. Federally-owned and managed public lands include National Parks, National Forests, and National Wildlife Refuges. These are lands that are held for all Americans. The Federal agencies responsible for managing America's natural resources must meet both the public desire to protect them and the public expectation of economic growth based on them. Within the Federal government, a number of agencies contribute to the management of natural resources associated with public lands. All of these Federal agencies are partners in the production of nationalatlas.gov. In the United States there are only two kinds of reserved lands that are well-known: military and Indian. An Indian Reservation is land reserved for a tribe when it relinquished its other land areas to the United States through treaties. More recently, Congressional acts, Executive Orders, and administrative acts have created Reservations. There are approximately 275 Indian land areas in the United States administered as Indian Reservations (reservations, pueblos, rancherias, communities, etc.). The largest is the Navajo Reservation of some 16 million acres of land in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. Many of the smaller Reservations are less than 1,000 acres with the smallest less than 100 acres. On each Reservation, the local governing authority is the tribal government.
