He received his BA degree from the University of Michigan in Physics and Mathematics with teaching certification and began his professional career as a high school physics and mathematics teacher. Jim received his MS degree in Physics from Purdue University. He was named science and mathematics teacher and department head at Powers High School when it opened in Flint after being nominated as Teacher of the Year and commended by an architectural firm for innovation in the educational specifications and design of the science area. Jim began his administrative career when he accepted the principalship of a middle school and two elementary schools in the Flint area. Answering the call to "move west", Jim, his wife, Rosemary, and their four children of elementary school age moved from Flint to the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming. For the next eleven years they worked in various administrative and educational leadership positions. They helped to develop Native American educators for the various positions of leadership in the school. Jim chaired the writing of educational specifications leading to grant approval and construction of a new school and led the school into North Central Association accreditation. He also chaired the Board's Policy Committee leading the staff, board, and community into the development of educational purpose and processes. He completed his work at St. Stephen's as business manager for the school that had changed over completely to Native American Administration. In 1985 Jim received his Educational Specialist degree from the University of Wyoming. | |
