'Over-testing' worries Wyoming educators By HOLLY STROTHER Star-Tribune staff writer CST - Testing is one of the key ingredients to President Bush's education act, and many Wyoming educators say they are concerned about "over-testing" their students. Under the No Child Left Behind Act ( H.R. 1 ), every student in the third through eighth grade is to be tested annually in math and reading by the fall of 2005. Teacher performance will also be judged by the overall performance of the schools. The yearly test will be left up to each state to develop individually with the aid of the U.S. Department of Education through funding and regulations, a department spokesman said Wednesday. The tests will be aligned with each state's standards, he added. The state of Wyoming has several ideas for developing the tests on the back burner, said Scott Marion, the state education department's director of assessment and accountability. One idea is to expand the high school body of evidence consortium currently used within 32 districts of the state, he said. The consortium takes teacher representatives from the districts within the core subjects and combines them into subject groups. With the aid of a facilitator each group designs project-based assessments that meet the state standards for the subject. The projects are then passed to the districts and students' work on the project is evaluated against a scoring tool used by all participating districts, Marion explained.
