"Preparation and early intervention are the keys to ensuring that all children begin school ready to learn. Policymakers now have a much better appreciation that for students—like sprinters—their ultimate success is dependent on a good start out of the blocks. It is especially difficult for students with disabilities and low-income students to catch-up academically if they don't hit the schoolyard running," said Brenda Welburn, NASBE Executive Director.
"Unfortunately and for too long, early childhood education programs have been fragmented among different programs under various state and local jurisdictions. The five state boards receiving grants have exhibited a willingness to establish comprehensive early education policies that will foster high-quality programs and promote inter-agency cooperation for the benefit of children and schools," Welburn noted.
The awards are the follow-up to a national conference held on May 17-18, 2001 regarding

Picture kindergartners discovering the magic of poetry. Or imagine senior citize ns sculpting for the very first time. Those images will give you an idea of the range of creative activities the Wyoming Arts Council's Arts in Education (AIE) program sponsors. Our goal is to ensure that all Wyoming communities have access to life-long arts learning opportunities. We do this is by awarding funds to place artists in schools and communities, to support specific projects, and to provide training opportunities. We also plan AIE gatherings, and take an active role in encouraging school districts to include the arts as part of their core curriculum. ARTS IN EDUCATION SUPPORT
The Arts Council employs a full-time Arts in Education program manager to help you write grants, offer advice on programming, and ensure rewarding arts education experiences. The program manager also serves as a link to statewide, regional and national organizations which impact Wyoming arts education policies and funding. The Council publishes a number of useful publications, including artists rosters and a monthly news letter, and maintains an active website (wyoarts.state.wy.us) with up-to-date information. If you have any questions about the Council's granting programs, the artists who serve on the various rosters or any other aspect of arts education, just call 307-777-7742. We're happy to help!
