The Write Stuff
Thomas Cronin, Whitman College ABOUT THE AUTHOR Thomas E. Cronin
, President of Whitman College, authored this essay for the APSA newsletter, News for Teachers of Political Science in the Spring of 1986, while serving at Princeton University and Colorado College. This work continues to be a significant tool for students in their pursuit of effective research and writing. What follows are suggestions and cautions for students writing a research paper. My suggestions are merely that. They are personal, general and speak more about writing than about research. Make no mistake about it. Research and writing are demanding work, even for the professional. You won't hear professional scholars or writers boast about the easiness of their craft. No matter how much they love it, and they often love it more than anything else, they find it demanding, exacting, lonely and often painful—if they really work at it. "Writing, at its best," writes Ernest Hemingway, "is a lonely life ...."
For a true writer each book should be a new beginning when he tries again for something that has never been done or that others have tried and failed. Then sometimes, with great luck, he will succeed. How simple the writing of literature would be if it were only necessary to write in another way what has been well written. It is because we have had such great writers in the past that a writer is driven far out past where he can go, out to where no one can help him.

A general guide to science writing. No one who has and choosing your words. writing is one of our indispensable means of communication.

Communicating Chemistry
The following article is by John Garratt and Brian Mattinson . It has been copied from Education in Chemistry ), 1995 (with permission of the authors and the Royal Society of Chemistry).
A general guide to science writing
No one who has something original or important to say will willingly run the risk of being misunderstood; people who write obscurely are either unskilled in writing or up to mischief THERE ARE THREE fundamental aspects to good science writing - planning the structure, thinking about your reader, and choosing your words. Writing is one of our indispensable means of communication. But it is more than this: it helps us to formulate ideas, and provides us with a permanent record of them. For undergraduates it is also one of the means by which their understanding of their subject is assessed. Effective writing is therefore an invaluable skill. You can learn something of the skill by following the advice of experienced practitioners . You can also learn by reading widely and thinking critically about the quality of what you are reading. But you need constant practice to develop the clarity and conciseness of style that is essential to good scientific writing.
Structure
When you have thought clearly, you have never had any difficulty in saying what you thought. And when you cannot expressyourself, depend upon it that you have nothing precise to express, and that what incommodes you is not the vain desire to express, but the vain desire to think more clearly

Security Watch : Don't get burned by viruses and hackers. Why schools should teach virus writing E-mail to a friend Send us feedback By Robert Vamosi
Senior associate editor, CNET Reviews
June 11, 2003
Idle hands are the devil's playground , or so the saying goes. This is particularly apt for hackers and virus writers, whose activities are, I believe, born largely out of boredom rather than malice. Their decidedly antisocial behavior aside, many virus writers and hackers begin as well-intentioned individuals with no outlet for their intense curiosity about computers and the Internet.
I'm not going to defend every hacker out there. Nor will I defend script kiddies, who generally have no programming skills whatsoever. I do, however, think that a fair number of exploits are the result of curious individuals testing their skills and seeing what they can get away with. Some youths commit hacks only as a rite of passage to distinguish themselves from the ranks of other self-taught programmers.
Like toddlers, hackers-in-the-making break things and make messes, but often there is no evil intent behind their actions. I believe that, with a little effort, we can nudge these youths toward a more productive future.

Teaching Writing as Part of Arts and Science Courses: Lessons from Experience
Prepared by Margaret Procter for the Arts and Science Committee on Writing, University of Toronto, August 2001
The in-course writing initiatives sponsored from 1999 to 2001 by the Arts and Science Committee on Writing have provided several insights into efficient and effective ways of delivering practice and instruction in writing within existing departmental courses, and also some warnings about what not to do. The points below derive from studies of student, TA and faculty experiences. We looked at student samples and at data from surveys and focus-group discussions, and sought out ideas from course instructors and TAs. We now offer some advice for consideration by faculty members who already include writing assignments within their courses, and who may not have ideal levels of TA support or other resources for doing so. The links to examples are made available by permission of the course instructors. General observations

Writing Tips to Help You Get Started on a Teaching Philosophy
Feeling Stuck? Here are a few writing tips compiled by CIDR to help you find your ideas and put them into words. This is NOT a series of steps to be followed in sequence, but a set of suggestions some of which may be more helpful to you than others. For now, we have writing tips addressing the teaching philosophy statement and the materials you include in the appendix. Skip around, try a few things, and let us know what helps. If you come up with other helpful tips, let us know and we'll add them to the list.
Writing a Teaching Philosophy Statement
  • Back to the Beginning
Think about the questions you ask when you're planning to teach:
    • What do I want students to learn?
    • What can I do to facilitate their learning?
    • What obstacles are there to student learning?
    • What can I do to help students overcome these obstacles?
    • If you feel like your philosphy statement is too abstract or impersonal try answering the question, "What does this look like when I do it in class?"
    • Think about the times you have helped people learn in other situations even when you weren't officially in the role of "teacher"; for example

This book was concise, simple, and effective. Roche did not bore you to death by focusing on the theoretical. She concentrated on the practical, just like she said she would. I found it more helpful than the other books that I read. I would recomend this book to a friend.
