A Word About Teaching Process Across the Disciplines ... Additional Ideas for Using Process Pedagogy Process Pedagogy: A Brief Explanation
Perhaps the most influential development in composition theory and practice in this century took place in the late sixties and early seventies with the emergence of process pedagogy. Up until the late sixties, composition classes, influenced by the principles of New Criticism, were largely text-based: students read texts, and they produced them. This New Critical emphasis on text veiled the idea of authorship and its attendant processes. Accordingly, in these writing classrooms, professors rarely discussed the process of composing. Rather, they emphasized text: its clarity, authority, and correctness. Process pedagogy aims to shift attention away from the text and towards the processes that created it processes that should be understood as fluid, complex, and, above all, highly individual. Process pedagogy offers professors a new way of thinking about the teaching of writing:

Writing:
Captioning Martin, April 24, 1998 When working on creative writing with my special education students, I will often pull from a file of newspaper or magazine pictures and have the students write captions, serious or humorous ones. For oral language and communication skills, they may also sit back to back and one person describes the picture for the other person to sketch. This can be humorous if you make it a contest for the most accurate drawing.
Student journals Linell Davis, January 22, 1999
Reasons for asking students to write Engliish journals
* Fluency practice
It helps to get the words flowing. You can't work on improving their writing until they produce words and sentences. The more the better. This is about quantity. * Source of ideas
A journal entry might hold an idea for an essay or other more formal writing. * Non-threatening
Because you define it as informal writing, students are less afraid of making mistakes. Because they are more relaxed and have fewer fixed ideas about what a journal should be, they often write better in their journals than in formal essays. * Audience and argument
Students learn that they can actually communicate in writing. They have readers and the readers have opinions! They learn to give reasons for their opinions.

Help Your Child Learn to Write Well
April 1993 American children must be ready to learn from the first day of school. And of course, preparing children for school is a historic responsibility of parents. Should you help your child with writing? Yes, if you want your child to:
    • Do well in school
    • Enjoy self-expression
    • Become more self-reliant
You know how important writing will be to your child's life. It will be important from first-grade through college and throughout adulthood. Writing is:
    Practical.
Most of us make lists, jot down reminders, and write notes and instructions at least occasionally.
    Job-Related.
Professional and white-collar workers write frequentlypreparing memos, letters, briefing papers, sales reports, articles, research reports, proposals, and the like. Most workers do "some" writing on the job.
    Stimulating.
Writing helps to provoke thoughts and to organize them logically and concisely.
    Social.

While Word can't give a student the skills essential to writing a meaningful, coherent essay, Word can certainly provide the tools that make it easier for the student to focus on ideas, tone, and words, rather than on the technicalities of just getting words on paper (even electronic paper). The ability to experiment with structure and formatting, to really "see" how an essay looks, can help the young writer see how her ideas come together. Likewise, making a habit of proofreading ensures that the writer takes one last read-through of an essay before she hands it off. In Word the Outline view, the spelling and grammar checker features, and the Thesaurus can ease the difficult road to writing a great essay. Here's how.

    What is a Teaching
    Portfolio?
It is a factual description of a professor's teaching accomplishments supported by relevant data and analyzed by the professor to show the thinking process behind the artifacts. Most portfolios are NOT collections of everything that the professor has done in the way of teaching over his or her entire career. Rather they are selected samples that illustrate how that individual's teaching is carried out in the various venues in which teaching occurs. Edgerton, Hutchings and Quinlan (1991) describe portfolios as follows:
  • Portfolios provide documented evidence of teaching that is connected to the specifics and contexts of what is being taught.
  • They go beyond exclusive reliance on student ratings because they include a range of evidence from a variety of sources such as syllabi, samples of student work, self-reflections, reports on classroom research, and faculty development efforts.
  • In the process of selecting and organizing their portfolio material, faculty think hard about their teaching, a practice which is likely to lead to improvement in practice.

    JavaScript for the Total Non-Programmer
This tutorial will take you step by step through the fundamentals of Javascript. You will learn how to write functions, use data from text boxes, create IF-THEN conditionals, program loops, and generally make your web page "smarter." I teach computer classes for a living to corporate clients of all levels. After 2 years of teaching, I have learned a lot about communication between people of various levels of computer experience. This tutorial assumes that you have no prior programming experience, but that you have created your own HTML pages. If you find this tutorial helpful, please let me know (it's my only reward). Also, links are graciously accepted. What is JavaScript? Javascript is an easy-to-use programming language that can be embedded in the header of your web pages. It can enhance the dynamics and interactive features of your page by allowing you to perform calculations, check forms, write interactive games, add special effects, customize graphics selections, create security passwords and more. What's the difference between JavaScript and Java?
