Leigh Greenwood: Real Men Write Romance
Leigh Greenwood (Photo courtesy of Leigh Greenwood) Romance knows no gender. Just ask Harold Lowry, who under the pen name of Leigh Greenwood , writes some of the most romantic novels around. This bestselling author contends he never planned to write until his wife introduced him to the romances of Georgette Heyer. The books struck a chord, and with the help of his local Romance Writers of America (RWA) chapter, the one-time music teacher carved out a new career. But Leigh Greenwood remained loyal to his literary and organizational roots. Recently, RWA members returned the favor by electing Lowry as their first president of the new millennium. For Lowry, the experience gave a whole new meaning to the phrase "getting the call." Crescent Blues: What does it take to be a guy in a woman's world? Leigh Greenwood: Actually it has been very easy for me. I went to my first meeting of a local RWA chapter in 1985 and was accepted immediately. At no time was I aware that I was the only man present. Maybe I was too focused on trying to learn why my books didn't sell to notice, but I don't think so. I've always been accepted at the local and national level. Members seemed genuinely happy for my success. RWA is the most warm, supportive, accepting group of people in the world.

113. Money Article
Sabrina Jeffries' article and chart covering potential income for an average midlist romance author.
http://sabrinajeffries.com/writing/money.htm
We all know how a typical romance author lives. She rises in the morning to the smell of breakfast cooked by her housekeeper and brought to her on a silver tray by her butler. After donning her Givenchy dressing gown, she sits down to read the New York Times and dictate letters to her trusty personal assistant. She bathes in her jacuzzi, then dresses in her Donna Karan leisure wear to work an hour or two at her state-of-the-art computer. Then she jets off to New York to meet with her editor, after which she has a nice lunch at the Russian Tea Room. This scenario is so far removed from my own life that I had to go online to find out an expensive designer name for the opening of this article. I'm sure there are romance writers out there who live like this, but only if they fit one of the following descriptions:
  • Their husbands are brain surgeons They inherited old money They have incredible luck at the gambling tables
The rest of us earn anything from a pittance to a nice living. And this is where I explain to you why that is.
