romance writing Write from the Heart: The Men of Romance by Joyce Lavene It is your work in life that is the ultimate seduction. Pablo Picasso For now, there’s Harold Lowry and Jim McBride. Harold Lowry is a male romance writer. He has been for fifteen years. He was the first man to serve as president of a local RWA chapter and the first man to be elected to the RWA board of directors. He is also a very successful romance author with 23 books and three novellas to his credit. He writes under the name Leigh Greenwood but doesn’t make any bones about the fact that he’s a man who writes romance. "Maybe I’m just unaware, but I’ve never felt out of place." He started writing when his wife started reading romances and the genre was in the process of becoming what it is today. "I suggested that she try to write a romance." She said she couldn’t and suggested that I do it. I said if she’d give me a plot, I’d try to write a book. She gave me a line. "I’ve lost everything." 889 pages later, I had finished my first book. It was much too long and badly overwritten. I later sold the first half which became

A MOST UNEXPECTED MARRIAGE Victoria Fontaine's mischievous nature and brilliant, biting wit have scandalized the ton ...and earned her the nickname "Vixen." But her reputation pales before the infamous Lord Althrope's, known as "Lord Sin." The years Sinclair Grafton spent on the Continent have done nothing to quell the rumors about his past. And when the stunning Vixen and the handsome rogue find themselves momentarily alone at an elegant gala, their passion gets the best of them. Caught by Victoria's father in a shockingly sensual kiss, Sin and Vixen have no recourse except a wedding. At first the very liberal lady relishes the thought of an unfettered marriage to an indifferent, unrepentant scoundrel. But she suspects there is more to this enigmatic, remarkable man, that his rakish persona is merely a pose. And after one unforgettable night of ecstasy, Lady Vixen is determined to unmask the true Sin...to satisfy a passionate heart that craves far more than freedom. Indulge and be delighted! -

What's New?
Update: 1/20/04 It seems I have been remiss in updating this site. I'm sorry. I hope to do better. In the meantime, I want to again thank all who have asked about my Roswell Fanfiction.
I have now add the final chapter of "Fate?"
entitled "Fate, The Next Chapter"
I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did writing it.
I plan to update this section of my site more with other completed fanfiction.
But it is a slow go. Sorry.
LAST UPDATE:
I'd like to appologize to those who have viewed my
Nora's page and found things "wrong". I doublechecked and for some unknown reason the images are just not working (i.e. Rising Tides, the code is correct, the image was not.). I have hopefully now fixed that problem and updated everything while I was at it. I have updated several of the pages, including my NORA page. More soon! Recently, I have added "Fate?, The Sequel" to my Roswell Fanfiction. And to advertise another project (off my site), a new chapter has been added to Terescia's Round Robin Challenge over at Terescia's site More updates soon!

69. Writing The Multicultural Romance
Article by romance author Shirley Hailstock.
http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Bistro/6812/multicul.html
WRITING THE MULTICULTURAL ROMANCE @ 1995 by Shirley Hailstock This article may not the reprinted or distributed without the author's permission.
Multicultural romances developed like movie stars. Writers have been working for years then suddenly they're an overnight sensations. Since everyone is part of a culture, we define the subgenre as a romance in which the main characters embrace one of the minority races in the United States. At this writing these books only have African-American characters as the major players. There are several translations into the Spanish language of some category romances and Indian romances, which had previously been considered historical, are suddenly popping up in the multicultural classification. The elements of a multicultural novel are the same as they are for any well written book; character, plot, setting, sexual tension, pacing, etc. Where the differences begin to verge off is that books written by African-American, Hispanic, or Indian women will bring with them a new perspective to the genre, a new view to a tried and true relationship. First and foremost it's a love story. At the core will be the one man-one woman romance. Around it, nurturing it, helping it to grow will be the culture, foods, clothing, lifestyles of the characters. Just as there are different rules for writing contemporary romance versus historical romance, there are different considerations in writing the ethnic/multicultural contemporary versus the ethnic/multicultural historical. I have separated some of these considerations and for the contemporary have categorized the elements of Background, Traditions, Methods of Speaking, Expression, Description, Occupation and Setting.

70. The INTERNET WRITING WORKSHOP
Join various mailing list workshops such as poetry, fiction, flash fiction, romance, novels, and nonfiction. Post and receive critiques of work, plus critique other works. Discuss the finer points of writing.
http://www.manistee.com/~lkraus/workshop/index.html
Internet Writing Workshop WHAT IS THE INTERNET WRITING WORKSHOP? The Writing Workshop exists for two primary purposes:
  - To create an environment where Works In Progress can be passed around and critiqued, to help us improve these works and to improve as writers.
  - To give people interested in writing professionally a support group  where information can be shared and various aspects of writing can be discussed.
The Workshop is open to all styles and genres of writing:  literary fiction, genre fiction, poetry, children's writing, essays, newspaper articles, scripts, you name it.  Members do not need to be published writers, only to be serious about writing and about wanting to improve.
Because these are workshops, membership is restricted to participating members.  Group or anonymous memberships are not allowed.
The key word in the Writing Workshop is "Workshop".  Every member is expected to take an active part in the proceedings.  We are here to become better writers, not to watch each other.  If you don't take an active part in these lists, you will be dropped from the membership.
Works are submitted for criticism only.  Submission is not considered  publication.  The fact that the list membership consists of active,  participating *writers* acts to support this consideration.
